We could also take Gaborik back whos on perma IR with 1 year left at 4.875. Ottawa would probably rather pay somebody to play then sit on the sidelines. It’s over $10m in cap space. Demko is probably worth the two 2nds. But you add $10m of cap space ($16m if you count both years of Eriksson) and there’s no way. Vancouver is going to have to pay through the nose to dump Eriksson. There’s zero chance they can move $10 of dead space (plus Demko) and get an actual return.

As for Gaborik, they are probably only paying a portion of his salary and the rest covered by insurance.

Louie at $6 and Baer at $3.3 are both massive CAP dumps.
Drakrami
For the past 2 years how could a trade involving Ottawa not have Eriksson in it!? Reminds me of the Tanev to Toronto for Nylander trades.

Ottawa won't have any trouble reaching the floor. There's no reason for Melnyk to spend 5M more when he doesn't have to. Also there are more cost efficient contracts to reach the floor than Eriksson's - Russell is on the trade block and only costs 1.5M vs the 5M for Eriksson. Maybe Ferland on LTIR Resign Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli (if reasonable price) and RFA's. Sounds like New Jersey is more looking to take advantage of cap strapped teams to actually bring in good players. Fitzgerald was talking of making similar deals to the ones that brought them Palmieri / Johansson. Ottawa is not competitive enough to believe Melnyk will want to spend beyond the floor which they won't have any trouble to reach. Adding any contracts beyond just increases their losses. Friedman wonders if Detroit will even spend beyond the floor this year. They aren't expected to be competitive either. They have plenty of veteran contracts which they can't move. Some owners are struggling in their regular business. Owners are losing money so adding anything more than to reach the floor is just compounding their losses. Cap clearing trades for unwanted contracts might be difficult to pull off this year. There might be more Neal for Lucic type deals. High end players wll always be desirable but mid/bottom-of the lineup players not so much. For cap reasons (whether max or internal) there might even be much better players available than the players the Canucks wish to dump.

To OTT: Thatcher Demko, Loui Eriksson, Sven Baertschi To VAN: NYI 2nd 2020, CBJ 2nd 2020 Ottawa has 37M in cap space next season. id rather trade demko and a 2021 2nd eriksson for top ten pick from ottawa gets rid of 7 mill in cap and a decent prospect to add to our up and comers

Considering Demko doesn’t have anywhere near that value, especially to Ottawa (who already have Hoberg)
