nergish
Truly a legendary performance. I used to watch Schneider's Canucks highlights whenever I needed my goaltending fix. Now I've got this. Schneid's first few seasons as backup/1B to Luongo were some of the most unbelievably consistent and technically flawless I'd seen, but that three game stretch from Demko is even beyond that. I think Jacob Markstrom has now thrust himself into the position of second greatest goaltender in Canucks history (sorry McLean or Brodeur fans), and he is the best goalie in our organization today... But that three game stretch from Demko was just so beyond anything we've ever seen. Having that sneak peak into his potential in this league was just unreal. I read an article about Thatcher probably about week before his draft. Mentioned how he was considered the top goaltending prospect that year, talked about his development path in California, etc. Before that, I'd never heard of him. When I read we had selected him, as a goalie myself, I was stoked. Brian Burke even recently admitted that he took MacDonald simply because Thatcher had mentioned his upcoming dual-hip surgeries in their pre-draft interview. It scared him off. Along the way, Demko has thrived at Boston College (10 shutouts in his final year!), had a good showing for Team USA at the World Juniors, quickly adapted to the AHL and took over the starter role there relatively easily, was invited to the World Championship, and settled into an NHL backup role to one of the league's best. I bring all this up to say, this is not a flash-in-the-pan. Nobody expects him to play like he did against Vegas consistently, but that performance wasn't an accident. He has met every challenge along the way, and that was just another one of those challenges. Not entirely sure how the goaltending situation will play out, but I feel pretty confident that Demko will be a great NHLer for a lotta years, and we've got to be extra careful. We're going to be left shaking our heads if we trade this kid and he just continues this same trajectory with another team.
