Pr3mo
Do you think Markstroms negotiating rights could be packaged with Baerstchi at maybe 25% retained would be enough?
JM_
No. The teams that need him need to move salary out.
Phil_314
Rights aren't worth that much.
NewbieCanuckFan
Aren’t negotiating rights typically only like mid round picks?

Enough for what? Is your proposal unsigned Marky + Baertschi for just taking them off our hands?
kanucks25
Even if the team that trades for him buys him out, it won't be worth it for them: $1.6M in real cash overall and 1.7M cap and 0.8M cap over the next two seasons. Negotiating rights are worth 4th round picks or worse historically. I don't think a team sees the value there unless for some reason a team like Colorado thinks it's vital they get the first shot at signing him. And even then they'd probably offer a better pick instead of agreeing to take back money.

Rick Blight
I think a team like Carolina could be interested but they would want us to take Reimer back in that deal. Assuming Markstrom could be signed for $6M this would not cost them that much cap space. Markstrom would be paid $2.6M more than Reimer, Baertschi with 25% retained and buried in the minors would be about a $1.5M cap hit and the end result would be about a $4.1M cap added to Carolina. Personally, I think that would be a deal Carolina would consider assuming they believe Markstrom would sign with them and for $6M or less. Not sure Reimer is a goalie I would want to share duties with Demko though.........
Ilya Mikheyev
I think Marky's rights are worth a 4th or 5th right now and a 5th or 6th next week as FA season gets closer. UFA-to-be Edmunson's rights were traded for a 5th this week, for example. So a combo of Baer (-25) + Marky for like..... a conditional 7th or an extremely low level prospect/depth player if there's a team that wants to take a chance on Baer, maybe. Was thinking about Markstrom’s rights earlier today. What if the Canucks and Flames made a swap of some kind? Markstrom’s rights for Talbot’s right and a draft pick. The Canucks get their 1A goalie on a 2 year deal (3 milllion AAV) to help break in Demko as the number 1 (60-40 or 65-35 split where Demko starts the majority of games), while the Flames sign Markstrom at 6 million for 6 years (or whatever term Marky is looking for). Im wondering if something like that could work for both teams?

86Viking
JB should make his best pitch to Markstrom and if he wants a contract with a NMC or more term or $$$ then trade his rights to a team, try to get a conditional pick as if he signs with that club we get a higher pick. There is less than a month to go till UFA, can't drag things out too long, they already had a full season in which they could have extended him and either didn't or JM wanted to bet on himself to increase his worth. Any new deals can’t include a pick conditional on re-signing. https://www.canescountry.com/2020/7/9/21318603/national-hockey-league-collective-bargaining-agreement-return-play-coronavirus-stanley-cup-playoffs “ Teams will no longer be able to condition a draft pick in a trade on a player re-signing with the acquiring team. In other words, deals like the one that sent Taylor Hall to Arizona, with a third-round pick coming back to New Jersey that could upgrade to a second- or first-round pick depending on if Hall re-signs with the Coyotes, will not be allowed. Conditions relating to games played, playoff qualification or advancement and the like are still allowed.” Edited September 15, 2020 by qwijibo

A team like Colorado could sure use him. Their number one problem in the playoffs was goaltending. Having Marky between the pipes would definitely raise their odds of winning a cup. If signing him becomes doubtful, maybe Colorado might be interested in an exclusive negotiating window with him for a low draft pick.
Provost
I doubt we get to dump cap, but we should certainly put a time limit on the negotiations (soon) and move on if it isn’t going to work out. We need to look at the trade market for a goalie and not just UFAs, and we need time to sign our other free agents before the draft. We can’t wait forever for a negotiation that has already been going on for months.

I could already see a first round match up next season where the Flames with Markstrom in net takes us out in a long series where Markstrom stole a game 7 win of them.
Lazurus
Washington just announced they are letting Hotby go to FA, they could sign Markstrom for Hotby money and clauses and it would be a huge raise for Marky, 6X6.5 with clauses Teams that want Markstrom will just wait until later. Marky is the marque goalie out there now, apart from Demko.
