Ilya Mikheyev
Quote There is a chance Blue Jackets will sign right winger Josh Anderson to a long-term contract extension. How good a chance? Probably on par with the odds the Jackets had of beating the Tampa Bay Lightning last month. It’s conceivable, but doable is something else.... Three years ago, Ferris made a big ask and threatened to send Anderson to Switzerland. Anderson missed all of training camp before he agreed to a deal that had sat on the table for weeks. Coach John Tortorella was candid about his distaste for players who missed training camp. Jackets fans were sickened by all of it... The Jackets are a budget team, which means they might not even spend up to the $81.5 million cap ceiling. They have other contracts to extend — Pierre-Luc Dubois’ chief among them — and they have a bigger picture to consider. Anderson, coming off a one-goal season, does not have terrific leverage, not even in arbitration. And he is just a year away from unrestricted freedom... Darren Dreger, during an edition of “Insider Trading,” said the following: “Anderson would like to stay in Columbus, but he needs a long-term deal to do that. Jarmo Kekalainen may not have the stomach for that, which might fuel more Anderson trade speculation." Kekalainen brushed aside the comment about his stomach and said: ”(Anderson) assured us he does (want to stay). Based on our most recent conversations, I believe he does. We’d love to keep him. We’ve had a good dialogue. We have to fit him under the salary cap and within our structure, and those things are important to us. It’s a matter of agreeing what’s fair.”... What’s fair? Is Anderson the 17-goal scorer he was in 2016-17, his first full season in the NHL? Is he the 19-goal guy (2017-18) or the 27-goal guy (2018-2019). What is fair coming off a one-goal season that included shoulder surgery? When Anderson is right, he is an impact player. One strains to find someone comparable. Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals, another big thumper with a right-hand shot, comes closest. Both were drafted in 2012 (Anderson 95th overall, Wilson 16th), they’re the same age and they bring a similar presence. Mayhem... In a normal year, Anderson would be weighing the Jackets’ best offer against the price he could fetch next summer as an unrestricted free agent. Maybe, the Jackets would be forced to trade him, to salvage something. For months, that is how this negotiation trended. But this is not a normal year. The cap is flat and will remain so for the foreseeable future. General managers with little or no cap space have less flexibility. Players face a depressed market for their services. Does Anderson really want to stay in Columbus long term? It’s conceivable. Ilya Mikheyev
Anderson also requested a trade in 2017 but stuck around. He played 3 major junior years on the same team as Bo Horvat, attended his wedding, WJC together. Could be an ideal buy low, high reward p/u if the Canucks lose a RWer via UFA (Toffoli) or trade (Virt). 1
86Viking
Would love to add Josh Anderson to our team! But I am sure Columbus will want a lot even with him coming off a poor season before surgery.

If the deal was that easy I think it would be done. I think it would cost us more to get him, how much more I am not sure. Would also be curious as to what kind of term or $ Anderson is after...does he want to go to UFA and sign in TO?
VancouverHabitant
Oh man, I'd love to get Josh Anderson on our team! My view of him is of the last few seasons. I missed what he did (or didn't do) this year really... I guess he was injured a lot? While we're at it, let's take David Savard off their hands and send them whatever they'd like. Jake Virtanen + Nils Hoglander helps them with their scoring woes both now and in the future.
rekker
Have always been JA fan and I would love to see him on the Canucks roster. If he is indeed dangled as trade bait I'm sure Columbus will ask a lot but what they get back in offers will be underwhelming. The guy has had injury problems as well as consistency issues. Not sure his cap fit would work here either. In the end if they would take Sven and Jake I'd say do it.

So dangerous to trade a player like him before you even see what you got. If this team is to contend it will need players on entry-level deals who play well above their pay grade. Hogs could be a player like that. 1 2
peaches5
Anderson is worth a lot more than Virtanen and will likely get an contract around 4m if not more.
86Viking
My offer would be Virtanen and a 2021 2nd round pick. Sign JA to a 4-5 year deal worth around 4m?
Maginator
Doesnt make a whole lotta sense cap-wise, but stranger things have happened before. I wouldn't give him more than a 1 year deal as hes coming off a 4 point in 26 games season. Then after the year is up, it might be tough to sign him if he had another 25 goal season. Just saying, the most I'd be comfortable with is Virtanen (and Virtanen only) straight across. Even at that I still might rather hold onto Virt. CRAZY_4_NAZZY
https://www.nhl.com/bluejackets/news/josh-anderson-battalion-breakdown-2020/c-318921870 Quote Anderson admitted when he came to camp that a left shoulder injury suffered during the team's playoff run the previous April still hadn't fully healed. He played just two games before the shoulder was hurt again, taking him out of the lineup for six games. ... Sonny Milano took a hard hit from Mark Borowiecki early in the game, and Anderson stepped up to fight the Senators defenseman moments later. During the fight, Anderson suffered a right shoulder injury, and while he rehabbed the next two and a half months in an effort to rejoin the team for the stretch run, Anderson eventually in early March made the decision to undergo surgery that turned out to be season ending. I love Josh Anderson's punishing and responsible two way game, but to have two shoulder injuries one on each side is extremely concerning for me. It makes you wonder how that drastically changes his game too. Jake suffered a right shoulder injury during his draft season and again the following year, and ever since he has never been the physical force we saw in junior and in his first year in the NHL. I think it would be way too risky to commit dollars and term let alone a trade for a guy who could be broken physically. We already have a punishing bruiser who can barely stay healthy in Ferland, don't need another one like that. If the cost is significantly low, sure do it, but I wouldn't be spending key assets to get him. 1 1

timberz21
Pass, as much as I like the game he plays, I don't think he will keep improving or able to sustain that level of play. IMO he's the opposite of JT Miller, whereas we paid a steep price for Miller (which turned out to be fair value or even on the cheap side), but you could see more potential in him playing on a deep Tampa line-up and could safely assume he had lot more to give. He was also signed to a pretty good contract, which now is a complete bargain. On the flip side, Anderson would cost almost the same price to acquire and you'd need to give him an expansive extension. As oppose to Miller, I think we have seen the ceiling from Anderson, he's not going to give you more than we've already seen and will most likely start to decline (maybe not as drastic, but something similar to Lucic). Wow, let's pump the brakes a bit here Josh Anderson is only 26 and only made 1.8 million. You guys are talking like he's in his 30s and about to cash in on a 5 million/year deal.
warrchief
Josh Anderson isn't worth it, we are in cap limbo and you want jimbo to trade for him and sign him long term? Cmon, we are trying to open up cap, not spend it.
