Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie, the league announced Monday.

Makar edged out Vancouver Canucksphenom Quinn Hughes and Chicago Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik.

The 21-year-old racked up 50 points in 57 games for the Avs while averaging 21 minutes per contest.

Like many others, I was expecting this outcome.

But it really just feels so wrong.

Makar is a fantastic player, but Q. Hughes just laid the groundwork for what will be a legendary NHL career.

Makar I look at and think, "man, that guy could win a Norris one day!"

Quinn I look at and say, "man, that guy could be the best player in the entire National Hockey League one day!"

Makar COULD WIN a norris one day......Quinn WILL BE A PERENNIAL Norris favourite year in and year out

He did, but the analytics favor Quinn. QoC, oZone/dZone starts, shot metrics, etc. I thought it might give Quinn a bit of an edge.

Either way they're both amazing young talents.
