[Rumour] Canucks have not offered C.Tanev a contract extension

Let the blueline “overhaul” begin.

This news + Tanev supposedly having a contract in place with the Pens to partner up with his brother. Wonder if the Canucks sign a dman to replace him or go the trade route. JB’s been on record in the past trying to do both without much showing.

Tanev supposedly having a contract in place is pure speculation and quite honestly BS.  First of all, the courting period is not open.  Secondly, even if Penguins were doing it on the down low, you would think that Tanev would be pursuing an extension first, so having a "contract in place" with the Penguins doesn't add up.  Thirdly, Penguins have been asked to slash their expenditures due to the financial situation.  Spending 5 mil on a free agent goes against that.

I have no issues with bringing Fanta back and finding a cheaper replacement this summer.  There will be lots of cheap d-men available.

Cheaper?  It cost us a $6 million, long-term deal to get a #4D (Myers).  Sure there will be plenty of cheap d-men.  NONE of those will be remotely good as Tanev is defensively (and he himself has seen better days).

Fanta is a guy you have as depth to replace somebody hurt on the 3rd pairing.  Putting Fanta in the top 4 is asking for a lottery pick year for the team.

It’s actually pretty common knowledge and practice that certain teams-players have arrangements made for when FA opens up nowadays.

If memory serves correct, pretty certain that was the case with the Canucks-Myers too. Had a contract agreed to beforehand and was signed once FA begun.

Well since Tanev said on a zoom interview that he wasn’t fussed about it and knows they are trying to line up other stuff first.

He said signing the day after the or the day before free agency opens is the same thing.  He has also historically said that there is a lot of trust built up with him and the club.

They are easily just happy to wait and see how various other moves fall and what money is left at that point.

Last year there was a free agency interview period like in the past few years.  Myers came to Vancouver and dined with Benning and Aquilini.  So did Eriksson at the time.

There's no free agency interview period this year.  Free agency opens up on the 9th of October and there normally shouldn't be discussions prior to that date.

You have Quinn Hughes, Edler for a year, you just signed Myers.

Presumably OJ or less likely Rathbone will be on squad in 6/7 rotation with Benn.
Left side is full, unless one of those guys gets moved. Right side has Myers who presumably isn’t going anywhere.
That only leaves two spots on the right side to retool/rebuild/rework/adjust or whatever you want to call it.

If you assume Tanev resigns that leaves 3rd pair R D as only position in which to re-whatever your Blue line.
Benning wants to see what his options are before committing dollars at the only significant spot he has to change his blue line.
