you can't run a team of kids. I'm not saying Loui is the ideal development addition, but he's at least in that vein. He does help a line to be more defensively responsible which is exactly what young Fs need.

If you want leadership and veteran presence, you don't take a castoff from another team who's overpaid and underachieves.    There will be plenty of cheap UFA to fill that void for Ottawa, no need to trade for it and make another team a favor, unless the return overwhelming.

They have some veterans too.  I think they will be looking for more efficient veterans than Eriksson.

we can't go off the fan/media spin here. His team mates actually like the guy and he does objectively contribute to a line's defensive play. There are certainly cheaper replacements tho in terms of AAV, it all depends on the whole "floor team" thing and if thats something Ottawa wants to take advantage of.

If we don't move Eriksson, it will be annoying.

They could have done something creative like swap Ryan at 50% retained for Eriksson.  Ottawa would have spent $12.5 million vs. the full $15 million plus they would have a player to play on the roster for two years which is worth another $2 million for them.  Buying out Ryan costs them $11.3 in real dollars plus filling that roster spot for two years.

Ottawa comes out ahead in our deal and Eriksson playing for them compared with buying our Ryan and we would have gotten $2.375 in cap savings along with Ryan as a depth forward.

That is, if Ottawa isn't suddenly trying to use this weird offseason to actually rebuild quickly by taking on contracts of good players from strapped teams (a la Killorn, Stepan, and a slew of unqualified RFAs)

bingo. Its there to be done if they want to. In fact, if we end up dealing Demko it makes even more sense on his contract.

If Marky signs, then maybe Demko, Loui, Jake for the 28th oa pick in this years draft. We get that for Demko, Jake and Loui are the package there. Ottawa gets a goalie and is a cap floor team that saves real money.

Don't think anyone is giving you a 1st round pick for Loui Eriksson lol

Eriksson isn’t so much a veteran at this point in his career but for NHLers, at over 35 years old, he’s a senior.  Maybe the Sens will need him for their alumni team.

Guys on 650 were talking about a potential LE to Ottawa scenario opening up to get them at the floor and less to pay out. They were sitting at 41M with Bobby Ryan before this!

Jake and LE was brought up. Makes sense. Jake is young, won’t cost more than 2.5-3M and LE’s salaries mostly paid out.

Do it Jimbo!

Doesn't make sense, and they're not attaching Virtanen to get rid of that contract either … just so you know. lol

If actual dollars was the primary concern they wouldn’t have just spent real dollars to clear cap space.  They’re in a position to actually improve their team right now.

I agree 100%. They closed out the season playing great hockey with their youth starting to get it and take the lead. They already have several more young players ready to step up, not to mention the 3rd and 5th overall. It wouldn't be the first time a struggling team made a couple finesse moves and blew the predictions out of the water.

The Sens will be a pretty decent team this year or next. They are not taking Eriksson for anything in the world except Petey or Hughes in a cap dump, so forget that nonsense.

I think you're just hoping from a Canucks point of view on this one, but it makes less than zero sense on any level as a Senator.
