Ekblad at the very minimum is a solid first pairing guy, with enough upside to one day possibly challenge for the Norris. In this case we could re-up Tanev and have a very solid right side. BB plus Woo makes sense - or BB and Rafferty Hughes and Ekblad would basically be our version of Keith and Seabrook for the next 7-8 years imo. We would have a very big advantage on the back-end with those two. In recent years, it really looks like having the top defenseman or an elite pairing really is key to winning a cup when you look at teams such as LA, Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, St,Louis, Dallas, and Tampa. Great players at great cap hits. Ekblad has 5 years left at 7.5 million which is a HUGE bargain. Losing Boeser would suck obviously, but rolling with Toffoli, Virtanen, Eriksson, and MacEwen, with Podkolzin waiting in the wings (pun?), is still really good RW organizational depth. I agree except PIT didn’t have an elite pairing for either of their cups - one completely without Letang, the other with Letang but he played with an average D. Absolutely for the rest of them though. TB IMO is the most stacked team of all these examples - even more then the CHI ones. When they can win without Stamkos, have two guys score more points then anyone in like 30 years (except maybe Malkin first cup) and Hedman is their conn Smythe winner it says a lot. Balanced scoring too (top level depth/support). Would prefer Ekblad to OEL...

That’s a really bad contract when you consider OEL’s age, cap hit, role, and use to the team. The Canucks don’t need LD’s. We need young RD’s that can play on a top pairing.

I’d understand given the need to replace Edler - and that’s exactly what he’d be, Edler wouldn’t get another contract with us in this scenario... I’d definitely prefer a RHD. I’d rather sign AP then TT and Tanev for example- we lose nothing - pay a premium for it but solidify our D for 5 years..the remaining two years would hurt though unless he’s Lidstrom like. OEL deserves his contract but only with the cap going up is it palatable. That said OJ could still make it - hopefully he can become Edlers long term replacement Edited October 2, 2020 by IBatch

I agree the OP trade probably isn’t enough to get Carlo but we absolutely should not consider moving Rathbone. There’s a decent chance he turns into another Ben Hutton but he’s a really great skater and looks very promising. In terms of young dmen on our roster, other than Hughes, I’m open to trading anyone else before Rathbone. Or you deal him for Carlo, who is only 2 years older, but already an established top 4 for one of the better teams in the league. I like Rathbone's potential, but if you have a chance at a sure thing you take it.
