[Report] Brenden Dillon interested in signing with Canucks

I think Dillon has a few options. I remember watching a video with guy in San Jose, either shortly before or shortly after the trade to Washington was announced. He was barely able to hold back the tears. He might be eyeing a return to SJ, although if he wants to compete for a Cup, he'd probably have a greater chance here. He might be hoping that Washington is interested in re-signing him, which I heard was their intention.

And he might want to be a Canuck seeing how well the team played in the playoffs, and how mightily they struggled with a big, physical team like Vegas. I hope he's not just blowing smoke and is legitimately interested, as I feel he'd be a great addition to the defense.

I still recall older Sharks-Canucks games, where Dillon was a physical force, punishing hits. I think he struggled in WAS a bit, not knowing anyone on the team when he joined. I think in VAN he would fit right in, familiar with the surroundings, grew up a fan. If we back off on OEL, and re-sign Tanev:

Hughes - Myers

Edler - Tanev

Dillon - Rafferty

Juolevi - Benn

Chatfield

It saves a bit of money, but is it enough to contend? What concerns me about OEL is the term of his contract. It has albatross written all over it.

Hate to piss on the parade but he’s not a crazy big upgrade on Fanta.

Am I the only one that really liked Fanta’s game for 80% of this season and the playoffs?

Fanta’s a year younger and cheaper.

I love Fanta. He's a solid d-man and I have no worries when he's out there. I think he's the perfect minute killer on the 3rd pairing (won't score, but won't give up goals), which allows our top guys to dictate the result of the game.

So because Dillon had a fan that was sad to see him leave SJ and he got emotional and made a video, that means that he's a good defenseman that's flush with FA offers? Not a reach at all.

Agreed.

Would rather keep Tanev anyway - yes, I know Tanev will cost more but he's plays a lot of minutes against top opponents and is a one-man penalty killer plus Tanev's value in mentoring Hughes is worth the extra over other possible options imo.

Keep Tanev, sign a league min guy like Fanta, play OJ and/or Rafferty and unfortunately don't qualify Stecher.

I like Dillon's game but unless Benn is moved out and Juolevi is not expected to get full-time minutes (even in a bottom pairing role), I don't see a spot for Dillon based on how they have structured their D.  Even if they could bring in Dillon to their structure, I don't see how the Canucks could afford Dillon.  If they sign Dillon and want Juolevi to beat him for a spot on the roster, then that's great and all but that's also another contract and larger cap hit that has to be accounted for somewhere.

lol I'm listening to this right now. Yeah, he wants to play here. Would be great, if he's willing to accept a hometown discount.

make less money, *and* get $&!# on that much more because you are from here. Sounds great.

Signing him or not, the takeaway from this off season so far is that we can see Vancouver is a preferred destination for many players now.  They can see this team is on the upswing with immense young talent.  From Toffoli wanting to return, OEL, and now Dillon, it's nice to see players wanting to come here!

Canucks know they’ll have to go through Vegas if they want to get out of the 2nd round

This is a good point. We know how physical teams like VGK and STL are, the playoffs are a physical grind. Would've been nice to have Dillon keeping tabs on Reaves, instead of Roussel running around like a headless chicken.

I take him as a replacement for Benn or Fantenberg... but he probably isn't going to crack the lineup next year.  We need a cheaper option for the 3rd pairing as it stands now, either Juolevi or Rathbone is more likely to slot in there than a $3 million dollar player.  Having said that, if we can exit Benn and get Dillon at about the same price, I don't mind that at all.  A 3rd pairing of Dillon-Stecher isn't the worst option if you can get that at $4-5 million total, but that would also necessitate having already gotten rid of other money somewhere else.

Dillon is a big, fairly physical guy but not a real fighter or deterrent so I wouldn't get him just for that aspect.  Go out and get Gudas if you want that because he at least plays the right side and would replace Stecher's money

I think too many things would have to fall into place for this to happen, mostly that other teams will want to pay him more and give him more opportunity.

Do we really need a 3ish million LD to playing third pairing minutes? Why not just keep Fanta? And unless Benn is moved, he's another LD guy pushing for a third pairing spot too. Much rather see Juolevi than Dillion, assuming he's not moved out.

Sure, he hits and plays rough. But we're already gonna be tight capwise as is.

That's not what makes him a solid defenseman, chucklehead. Not sure where you're getting that from, but maybe tuck it back in there because it makes you sound like an idiot.

I'll try to go slower so that maybe you might catch more of the points rather than writing another stupid post.

So.....ready?

What I was referring to in my post, was the idea that Dillion wasn't necessarily a shoe-in as a Vancouver UFA signing, as he might still have a want to go back to San Jose, as he (Dillon that is) was very emotional about being traded. I'm thinking his emotional state might have had something to do with wanting to remain a Shark. Following so far? So this point here illustrates that he may have interest in returning to San Jose. Hopefully that might sink in now.

He stated, as well, that he liked the Capitals and found that he had some chemistry there as well. There were reports out of Washington that they were interested in re-signing him. That indicates interest from the Capitals. Hopefully that's clear to you.

And today he's asked on Vancouver radio if he'd like to be a Canuck. This indicates that he'd be interested, but he could merely be answering a leading question.

None of those statements have any bearing on how good of a defenseman he is, and were never made to indicate such ideas. That was your misfiring brain cells slamming into each other that came up with that sentiment.

That being said, what does indicate that he is a good defenseman who might generate some interest, is that he's been paired with Norris winning defensemen for a fair portion of his career. He's been partnered for extended periods of time with Brent Burns and subsequently, Erik Karlsson in San Jose, and then with John Carlson in Washington. Even to the most fairweather hockey fan that should indicate that two teams that have been considered contenders felt comfortable in pairing him with their best blueliners for a reason.
