CanuckGAME
Wonder why we wouldn't buy sven out. Wish Sven would get a chance to play somewhere else, he's one of the good guys in the game.

Doesn’t really save us much compared with burying him, and it pushes dead cap into the season that we have to sign Petterson and Hughes to extensions. It is really even odds whether it helps us at all. It actually costs us more against the cap overall to buy him out, but we just get to spread some of it to the next year. We need the space even more in the 2021-22 season, so eating up more cap in the next two seasons is a net negative. Noble 6
I like this decision. I really don't like dead cap space.

Further to your point, probably why we'll likely not see Toffoli, Tanev, Markstrom, or Stecher return either (OEL trade possibility not withstanding... really hoping not) UNLESS it's to short term or low cap deals. CanuckFan1123
Buying out Sven wouldn’t appear to be a bad thing. Saves us 1.6 in cap this year, and with our looming FA’s that could be the difference in keeping or losing Stecher or even Tanev or Toffoli. Only costs 800k against the cap next year. I’m definitely a little curious about this decision... Plus buying him out allows him to try another city and not get buried in our AHL again. billabong
Isn’t there a 2nd buyout window? In the event there’s no AHL, if the Canucks loan Baer to Europe his contract comes off the books right?

It saves us about $600k on the cap this year compared with burying him, and it costs us $800k next year of dead cap. It is a net negative, do we need to save a little more money this season at the expense of the next one? Our cap crunch is bad now, it is terrible the next season.

We get 1.075m in salary relief by burying the contract, so the buyout only saves 525K this year (compared to burying) at a cost of 800k against the cap next year. Overall, his cumulative cap hit is 275k higher if we buy him out. Edit: @Provost got to it first ^^ Edited October 8, 2020 by MattJVD 1

It would be too easy an out for teams otherwise.

Only players who were on the roster at the TDL and earn more than 4M can be bought out during that 2nd window. Baertschi would not qualify for that 2nd window. If he is loaned to Europe (which he is unlikely to be interested in as he lives full time in North America), his buried cap hit would be the same as in the AHL.
