Popular Post The Listening
Hey everyone, Mods can take this down if not appropriate but with Markstrom signing with the Flames today, I just wanted to give a shout out to him. When we traded for him to send Luongo back to the Panthers, I wasn't expecting much. Markstrom at that point was considered a bust and personally I had no hope for him to ever become more than a fringe NHL goalie. His first few games were a mess, letting in goals on real loose plays and doing 360s in the crease when players were behind him. I was terrified when I saw him in net. Benning decided to ship him down to help him develop, and he never complained once. Markstrom took the demotion, grinded in the AHL and aimed to be better to earn his spot. And better he got, he gets called back up after standing out in the AHL, and ends up becoming our MVP for two years. The guy stole enough games for us to be considered a legit robber. I never gave you a chance, but man, I'm so glad you proved me wrong. You deserve the pay day, term and stability in your life for working as hard as you did to become an elite goaltender. I wish nothing but the best for Markstrom, even if he's playing for Calgary. Thanks for some good memories, make some more good ones there. 5 1 3 5
Nucker 67
I wish he would've accepted $9 over 2 years, but alas, he wanted to cash in now instead of 2 years from now, after he won a Cup in VAN. SEA would've probably claimed him, he would've been close to "home". ah well
nergish
He is legitimately the second best goaltender in Canucks history. Not that he necessarily accomplished what guys like McLean or Brodeur did, but just in terms of sheer confidence had in a netminder, consistency, and technical ability. He improved his play to the point where he was in the conversation as one of the top 5 goalies in the league. Very impressive stuff, and I think he's still got a good career left ahead of him. I personally think we made the right choice in hitching our wagon to Demko, as his career arc has been smoother and he's done nothing to dispel the notion that he's going to be a great starting goaltender. But this is a great opportunity to reflect on what Markstrom was in Vancouver, and he was simply a fantastic player for us. 4
Phil_314
Thanks for the memories Marky! Tribute to a great goalie of our time Now don't come back and burn us (pun partially intended) in the playoffs 1

He was not even supposed to be our starter instead was brought until Demko blossomed. His role on the team diminished in these playoffs and you could sense he was on the way out. His role was diminished? He got hurt... I really don't think it's a ludicrous statement at all, if anything more of a reminder of how weak our organization has been in goal until the last decade or so. Honestly, which Canucks goaltender would you place above Markstrom? Dan Cloutier? Cory Schneider? Garth Snow? Bob Essensa? Felix Potvin? Kevin Weekes? Ryan Miller? Andrew Raycroft? Johan Hedberg? Jason LaBarbera? John Garrett? Just think about it.

Nuxfanabroad
Would define him as a legit top-5 in Van history. Few more seasons like these 2, & he'd climb.. perhaps to the top?

Nuck1991
no hard feelings but he went to modern day goalie graveyard. That contract is going to bite them bad

If stayed here longer and maybe took us deep into the playoffs/finals then I could see him being second best. But no one will come close to Bobby Lou. fanfor42
Question why fans want to celebrate a guy who turned his back on the team to sign with a rival. Seriously. Seems to me a crazy trend to tear down current players like Boeser while celebrating ex players like Markstrom. For me. Markstrom can now go jump in the lake.

YEGCanuck
Great team guy, right attitude, good character and nice person, what more could we have asked for. He has developed into an elite goaltender in front of our eyes. We should be grateful for his contribution to the success the Canucks have enjoyed during his tenure. He is a winner wherever he plays. Thank you. 1

That's the disgruntled ex way of looking at things. Then there's the other side...the mature, reasonable business side that means these things happen. Budget constraints. Finding a window of opportunity to secure the best future for the family and having to move on for the sake of that even if it's painful. We don't really have to do either....tear down Boes OR fish Marky out of the lake. How about being gracious and extending thanks and appreciation to a warrior....who, even through some very troubled times, held his head high and kept it together to battle hard and put our (his) team in a position to win even when they weren't always at their best. How quickly some people forget that stuff. 2 1
