its the term, if we were going to do that why not just keep Tanev for 3 or 4 years?

No ones knows what the terms are though. What if it’s a salary dump and something else nice comes with it

Could be a multitude of reasons. Maybe in the end he didn't even want to come back. We simply do not know what went down behind closed doors. Tanev was one of my favorite players, and criminal underrated, but I wouldn't have been comfertable with signing him for 4 years. Not with his injury history and the miles on his body, not to mentioned the style of hockey he plays. I wish him all the best, but I don't foresee anymore injury free seasons in his career.

Benning said he wanted to rebuild the D, and have a D core who can move the puck faster. Wouldn't NS achieve that?

if it comes with a 1st sure, thats something we can use to dump Loui and then this makes sense. But 6 mil for 5 more years with no sweetener doesn't.

Age and term

I think he’d have 3-4 good years left in him.  There’s lots of top d in their 30s

id rather have a younger option too but this guy imho is an upgrade on Tanev.

Why are so many people not liking Schmidt.  He’d be our second best d ... genuinely curious

I get the PED reservations but weren't they watching the Vegas series?  He was an offensive force against us and not too shabby on D either.  Quality PMD and definitely better value at 5.9 than OEL at 8.25, with less term to boot.

So does Benn. We need natural RHDs.

He’s played the right side more than the left in Vegas. I don’t think it really matters. Few guys can be really effective playing both sides. It’s a nice trait to have. Schmidt is a top 4 Dman. Benn is a fringe NHL er at this point

Dunno, maybe cause Schmidt is a better hockey player than Tanev?

he might be, its just the near 6 mil and 5 more years part. At 29.

But if it comes with their 1st then whoopee, bye bye Loui.
