[Proposal] Canucks acquire P. K. Subban for Eriksson & Sutter

Canucks need a RD and need to shed salary. Devils need to save money.

Canucks trade Eriksson and Sutter for P. K. Subban.

New Jersey will save 3.5 million of tangible money. Vancouver will dump 10.375 million in cap space this season on two underperforming forwards.

New Jersey gets a centre, Sutter, that can play on the RW, which is a wing they need. Eriksson can still play on the wing as a "responsible" bottom 6 forward. NJ could buy him out next season to save more money.

Vancouver gets a RD veteran in P.K. whose point totals have gone down, but he can provide a necessary stop gap and at least tie up money on a position we need.

Getting tired of dreaming of what Benning should do. I wouldn't mind Subban here, if NJ could take Eriksson and retain salary on Subban;s $9. At least with Sutter, he's only got 1 year left and he plays C.

Hughes - Myers

Edler - Subban

not bad?

Not a bad idea actually.
However, I think the Devils like the leadership Subban provides, and have faith he will rebound from a bad season offensively.

That said, Sutter also provides leadership, and the flexibility to play wing or center. Could be a replacement for Blake Coleman.

So, it's two bad contracts for one, but Subban's lasts a lot longer.

We know that Benning has tried to trade for Subban in the past. He could believe that playing with Hughes would wake him up.

Jersey wouldn’t accept the above deal, but you might not be too far off actually.

Canucks take Subbann, and the Devils take on Eriksson, Sutter, and either a 2021 1st and/or one of Juolevi or Rathbone.

Is it something that I would personally do?   No.  However, I think that’s what NJ’s asking price would be.

Intriguing.  Thought P.K.'s contract went on for years more but for 2 years and with Loui and more adequate cap going back that's probably acceptable.

My only concern is if we'd be in for another cap squeeze if he doesn't perform well, and we'd need to re-sign both our stars before his deal expires.

  • 4 weeks later...

Eriksson - MNTC

Sutter - MNTC

My question would be...once a player waives his NTC or NMC does it permanently come off his contract or is it reinstated when he joins his new team?

Sutter's ends next year so not a big deal, but Loui will need automatic protection from Seattle if in fact the NTC stays intact...it make Loui's contract almost IMPOSSIBLE to move if that is the case...not sure a team would want to waste a protection slot on an over-the-hill player and potentially lose an up-and-comer who would otherwise need protection. If possible, the best candidate for a trade would be a team that has a number of young players under automatic protection, therefore they can burn a slot on Loui.

Hell no.  Subban stopped focusing on hockey when he married that Lindsay Vonn character.

yeah poor PK having a hot, athletic wife to focus on.

I do think Subban will have a bounce back year....however ....

I’d rather stick with Sutter expiring next year and be one more year with LE after that. Maybe after riding the bus in Utica this year LE will finally retire next year.

it would give us a pretty dynamic d group tho. On any given night we could have a dangerous offensive pairing.

Check your math (factoring in Subban's and Sutter's signing bonus's.  They only actually save $1.5m over the two seasons.  Totally not worth it to NJ

Also, it leaves Vancouver in a worse position next summer.  Currently they"ll have Sutter's cap dropping off after this season, if they do this trade they'll have Subban's full $9m cap hit next season to deal with

NJ would have to retain 1/2 for this to work. So what does that cost us in picks/prospects? probably too much.
