If there is a way to get out of that contract, it has to be looked at. He’s worth his contract. That’s what top four RHDs get when they get to free agency or more. His stats are comparable to Edler, and he definitely passed the eye test for me this playoffs. Want this guy on our team, and no he’s not overpaid, he’s earned his contract the same way Edler earned his. 1

His major off-season move is done, this year will be about seeing what we have in OJ, Rafferty and maybe Rathbone... Maybe. If JB gets another top 4 D, then just needs to protect Myers, Schmidt, and Player X. But would expose both OJ and Rafferty to the expansion draft. You show me the list of top 4, UFA aged D who have signed for less than $6m in the last few years (nevermind a shorter than expected 5 year term). I'll wait here.

ilduce39
Seems like hockey is full of them, but nice to hear Schmidt is another high character guy. Along with Holtby I’ve always appreciated JB going after that angle. I was worried losing Marky (and others) would hurt in the room as much as the ice... but not anymore. TheCerebral1
He's an upgrade over Tanev, who I love as a heart and soul guy. However, this reminds me of adding Hamhuis back in the day, different players, but it was an impact, that you felt from the top pair down. Good job Benning. We took a slight downgrade in goal, and upgraded in front of Holtby/Demko! Watch out Vegas, we're coming for you!
AV.
This is a solid move. A big upgrade on Tanev and worth losing Toffoli and Stetcher to finance cap-wise. Hopefully more shrewd moves like this in the future.
stanleysteamersmyl
Shock, surprised and very happy. Good job JB. I thought Schmidt was dealt to Florida. I remember him and Theodore rushing the puck up the ice against us every game. What a fast player with skill and a hard shot. We didn't have any high end skill D man two years ago, now we have TWO. Side note: Nate Schmidt was picked up by Vegas during the expansion draft from Washington. Washington went on to win the Cup the following season against Schmidt's Golden Knights. When the D man were being snapped up and all the good ones were signed, we all thought JB was looking in the bargain bin at Walmart when he was at the Gucci store buying at 90% off. https://www.nhl.com/video/schmidts-game-tying-goal/t-298240736/c-60157503 https://www.nhl.com/goldenknights/video/schmidts-game-tying-goal/t-282798380/c-5394009 1

LH shot but plays either side. Munches high minutes (can easily log 22-23 minutes per night), and can handle the hard minutes (he faced really high quality of competition with Vegas—actually tougher minutes than Tanev played for us IMO). Brings more value on the offensive side of the puck, but is overall a very solid defender at even strength. Gets excellent PK results, although he’s not generally viewed as a specialist in that area. Overall, just a solid, quality first pairing D who brings value to many areas of the ice. I definitely don't know much about Nate like you and others obviously do, and this makes me excited, what you're saying. I'm already thinking about how much better Tanev was with Hughes and how much better Nate could be with him. 40 minutes ago, Bure1010 said: Anyone else have the feeling in 3-4 years paying 11.95 combined to myers and Schmidt is gonna be pretty hard to swallow It'll be easy to wash down with the champagne from the mouth of Lord Stanley. 32 minutes ago, RWMc1 said: I lol'd. That's another 5 years at almost 6m for a guy who just turned 29. If we wanna throw down money and term at an aging guy we'd be better off going hard after Petro. We just walked away from a guy of similar age who couldn't stay healthy either. I am surprised they helped Vegas by giving up a third without dumping a portion of Ericsson or Sutter. On 10/10/2020 at 8:00 PM, fanofvan said: Firstly, I don’t consider Schmidt a balling right defenseman. He’s 29, is signed for $6m for 5 more years and has never played a full season. As for the PED’s, I’d have more sympathy for a player who failed a test due to a substance of abuse as opposed to a performance enhancer. To me it screams of someone who can’t make it the honest way so they look for an easier way. It was strange how he jumped to be a 40 point a year average guy so quickly with more minutes after being a third pair depth type on Washington. He is apparently a really positive happy guy all the time so he is on something. Not sure what it is... Lol. He gets reunited with Beagle and Holtby. Canucks trying to add all the ex Washington Capitals like how Calgary is going after ex Canucks. Also he has the Minnesota connection with Brock Boeser. I think this move had to be made Benning was desperate for a cromulent top 4 d partner for Edler. As it stands now the Canucks could use some scoring in their top 9 especially at RW but they will need around 4 million for Gaudette and Virtanen combined as well. On d Hughes-Myers Edler-Schmidt Juolevi-Benn This is not much improved over last year's d core Losing Stecher and Tanev will be a downgrade defensively. Benning must be hoping adding another offensively minded puck moving d man to take some of the burden of Hughes to carry the d core offensively will make up some of the difference. Schmidt can really skate the best veteran d man the Canucks have added since Ehrhoff probably. He needs to stay healthy though.
