[Trade] Golden Knights trade Nate Schmidt to Canucks for 2022 3rd-round pick

Tanev AND. Markstrom replaced.

HOLTBY

DEMKO

Lets be clear. Demko has not played a season as the number one guy yet.

And he may not this year. More like a tandem. Holtby could very well get more starts then him this year anyway

On one hand, good point.

On the other, maybe it would matter if offer sheets ever existed.

Everyone saw that you wrote 5th round pick.

Solid D man... great news.  A bit pricey cap hit in this market, but considering the alternatives we couldn’t have hoped for much better.

Ditch Eriksson still somehow and take one of Tampa’s forwards for a sweetener, then I can rest pretty easy for a “summer”.

This totally landed into Benning’s lap, I was assuming Schmidt would go East and there could be a shuffling that ended up with us hopefully getting a D man, I didn’t think it would be direct.

I think people are getting carried away with anointing him a #2D.  He is a good 2nd pairing guy who has struggled when put in a top pairing.  An upgrade on Tanev... more Sami Salo or Erhoff than the Edler or Myers comparisons to me. (Salo was one of my favourite Canucks or his era).  I get the excitement though, since it was pretty bleak.

If Tryamkin is allowed to join us partway into the season it could be a solid defence.  It kind of makes Rafferty a little disposable as he brings the same skill set as Schmidt, but not in the same league.  I could see a Juolevi-Benn 3rd pairing if we can’t find another guy for the right side.

With Schmidt we are likely gonna see the top 4 eat up a lot of minutes like last year. 3rd pair probably gets around 15ish again.

Juolevi could surprise and/or we could add another D-man. I would like to add another D-man. If we could make another trade to shed cap or acquire one in a cap for cap move it would be great.

Overall I am pretty content after this move. The only money that we've acquired and have tied up long term is on a player that's much better than the UFA's we let go. Schmidt is a really good fit on our team.

If JB could move some more cap maybe he can find another good trade.

I wonder if something else is in the works aside from ditching a little salary... Beggars can’t be choosers, but I would see Schmidt more of an Edler partner than complementing Hughes.

Hughes-XX

Edler-Schmidt

Juolevi-Myers

Maybe those Weegar rumours have something behind them, or maybe we just take what we can get after all the other plans fell through.

If any GM won on 55% of his trades and 55% of his draft picks made the NHL, he would be the greatest GM of all time.  The very best GMs make slightly fewer mistakes than they have successes, and they just hope that the failures don't sink them.  Hopefully GMJB has a few more years in the job.  Today should buy him another few months at least.

Oh for sure, it's not the trades and the drafts tho for GMJB, it's the signings. My gripe isn't with him at all though, it's with ownership to some extent. There's always been this weird level of involvement from them where it doesn't look like they are fully controlling the board but they aren't hands off either. If the year's performances don't line up to an improvement I could see them fire JB - and if the rumours of an internal cap are true (which I don't think can be after taking on this contract) - I am not sure would be a deserved firing.

I guess in hindsight this upset stems from the Toffoli situation, but I hope to see Benning make a few more moves before training camp at least. Keeping a level head as a fan is hard but I guess I should wait till the season opener before making any judgements ...

I was hoping everyone else would be distracted by all the Vegas and Pietrangelo noise...

And GMJB could quietly hit that warm trail to Tampa and take them for Foote..

Didn't expect him to do this in broad daylight.

Maybe he still can get us Foote.

Might not necessarily be able to take a contract back, now, but still, perhaps a prospect for prospect swap is possible...?

Anyhow - we're gonna inflate the hell out of this guy - and once the market corrects and expansion passes - [flip Schmidt = for a massive profit!] /s

I may be missing something but at the value we paid for Schmidt (29) why would we not have offer sheeted Cernak?

much younger and arguably already better than Schmidt

I dislike this player, always have and his stupid farm animal face. I don't particularly like the contract or that he's been busted for PED's as usually it's not a one time thing. That said, this is a significant upgrade for a 3rd round pick. We desperately needed a top 4 right side defender that can actually defend and move the puck and this is exactly that.

Thanks for clarifying:  LTIR is complicated.  What I was suggesting is playing on the difference between the 1.05 mil that we'd save by waiving guys like Loui, Sutter, Roussel and replacements for them from Utica at league minimum (0.7 mil), for the purposes of meeting the cap on opening day.  That's a 1.05 mil saving on three guys, which would go some way to shoehorning Jake and Gaudette in.  Then once you've met cap, you can recall some or all of those guys at their full salaries using LTIR, no?

I think I see what you mean.  The team can have an opening roster of 20.  So wouldn't even need that step if the intention is to put Ferland on LTIR immediately at season's start.  Doesn't solve the bonus recall issue though.  If he's injured they can also use off-season LTIR which already allows them to have access to his cap space.

For now he's healthy and has every intention to play.  It's less of a concern cap wise if he starts the season as a healthy player. If later in the season he's unable to play then 3.5M should possibly be sufficient to deal with ELC recalls.  Not dissimilar to this season. There's no cap space banked in LTIR so performance bonuses would be pushed over to the next season.

It's already filling his 3.5M cap space that is problematic cap wise.  In LTIR it's not possible to bank cap space so the team needs to be well below the salary cap to retain roster flexibility for short term recalls or adding Podkolzin.

I like that Green will have to choose this season rather than just riding Marky.

I say go with the hot goalie. If you win you’re in, non of this predetermined 70/30 split or whatever.

You're missing the part where Schmidt has more points in 1 season than Cernak has in his career. But why not get both? We still need another upgrade on defense.

Thanks, I can see why teams have specialists to deal with this stuff!
