Exactly this. The team has struggled to generate anything significant from the blueline for many, many years. I've stated many times that needed to change for success.

Schmidt just needs to buckle down, settle in, learn the system and play his game. He was indeed showing signs of progress, but still looked scattered and scrambly to me. Made me nervous when he was out there.

I also think his strong personality was a little awkward at the start for the guys. I think one has to ease into Schmitty's boisterousness.

Our need on D isn't scoring and puck moving. It's size, and truly quality shutdown ability. Myers is OK, but is a complimentary guy more than a true defensive workhorse.

Which is exactly what I would like to see Benning try to get for Schmidt in a trade.  Schmidt is really the only trade chip we have to try and acquire a decent Dman with these qualities.  If he was Schmidt's age or younger, and especially if he was a RHD, this would be a great swap IMO.

Schmidt had a tough season. Don’t think he has much trade value right now. Unless he has requested a trade, we’re better off holding him and hoping he improves.

In Vegas though he was paired with a shutdown guy (McNabb). It would be nice to find a more solid partner for him, but think it will be Hughes, Edler, and Rathbone next year on the left side.

McNabb should have been the guy we got from Vegas, every opponent keeps their head up when he's on the ice

The guy I'd really like to see on the right side is Scott Mayfield. He 2 more years at $1.5mill

I like it. Then we can upgrade with M. Bowey. /s

when you write M Bowey like that

my dysleksia see Boney M

so if M Bowey ever plays for Vancouver, we should call him Daddy Cool

I reckon (just my .02 cents)

He'd play better back on his left side?

Is there no one in FA for 6M that can be an average D man for how many years? I think there are better options.

I don’t think so.  Schmidt is Avery good player, who is an even better teammate, who plays both sides equally well.

He played mostly right side in Vegas, and fared well. But I’m not knowledgeable enough to be certain if there are systemic differences that make it more difficult for him to do it in Vancouver. (However, I do have a hunch that Baumgartner sucks.)

I doubt that it will be an issue... IMO Schmidt will be protected as will Myers and Joulevi.

Protecting Schmidt is a no-brainer.

But I sure hope they can acquire a D-man at the draft more deserving of a protection spot than Myers. His contract makes him pretty much immovable. If Seattle wants to clear that of the books for us then... please?

I don't see a cup in his future. Panic under pressure. We need more warriors, and he isn't that.

schmidt played great with vegas, everyone had a sh1t year but he was looking good before the Covid stoppage, he's capable too play 10x better than this season. would be a mistake not too protect him.

I don't think that is true. He's not that good, and isn't good under pressure.
