This is just a negotiation tactic That doesn’t really hold water. The agent said that their offers have been getting smaller since signing Anderson and Toffoli... that makes it pretty clear that Montreal is making other plans. The agent isn’t going to publicly lie, he might use the media to put pressure on a team, but he isn’t going to make stuff up. No reason at all for Gallagher to sign there if he is a pending UFA and they are lowballing him.

Master Mind
Would be a mistake for the Habs to move Gallagher, he's a big part of their team. I am curious as to who gets bumped down to the 3rd line between him, Anderson, and Toffoli, or if they plan to play one at LW. Any team would love to have him, but the asking price is probably more than the Canucks would be willing to pay.

Junkyard Dog
He is a bit of a better player than Tofu. On pace for 30 goals last season and scored 30 the 2 seasons prior. Likely cost us Pearson+. Maybe Pearson and Virtanen for Gallagher and Cale Fleury? Might have to add a bit. They have a lot of young D on the cusp. 86Viking
Montreal has signed players with some size this off season, that may mean they were a bit hesitant to extend Gallagher who is slight in stature and due to the style he plays will his body hold up into his 30s without injury after injury

You dismissed as a real possibility to discuss by saying it as JUST a negotiating tactic and he is really planning on signing with Montreal. That is a distinctly different argument than the agent trying to put pressure on the team by making the actual true state of negotiations public. Those are different positions. mll
Bergevin not even 2 weeks ago was saying that he wanted Gallagher to be signed long term and make him the best paid forward on the team. It's in french so via google translate: https://www.rds.ca/hockey/canadiens/gallagher-bientot-l-attaquant-le-mieux-paye-du-ch-1.7953247 “I'm ready to deal with this today if Brendan and his agent - Gerry Johannson - are ready. We have had preliminary discussions, but nothing more so far, "said the Habs GM, who will show the patience it takes in this matter. Even if it must drag on during the season or even until the last few days before the free agent market opens in 2021. In Bergevin's eyes, the Gallagher case is easy to settle. At least in general terms. “We want to keep Gally in Montreal for the rest of his career. We want him to be a Canadian forever. We will therefore take the means to make this happen. Clearly he will get a long-term contract because if he is offered four or five years, he will wait knowing full well that he will get that kind of contract next summer. " Could the Canadiens give him the maximum allowed by the NHL: an eight-year contract? “I do not want to negotiate in the public square. But it's clear that when you look at what Brendan has given the Canadian since the start of his career, when you look at the role he takes on our team, we can conclude that he deserves a very long contract. term. That’s all I will say. " Without giving specific numbers, Marc Bergevin agrees one thing about the salary Brendan Gallagher will receive: "He will become the highest paid forward on the team. " ....... Last week owner Molson doubled down telling Chantal Machabee that he fully supports a long term extension for Gallagher. His agent is most likely aware of those interviews and using them to help his side of negotiations. 1

His agent is most likely aware of those interviews and using them to help his side of negotiations. ... but the report from the agent was that the offers from Montreal kept getting smaller as they signed two other RW players, until the talks completely broke off. The state of things two weeks ago isn't very relevant to today in that context. A deal can still get done, but if Montreal spent all that money in the intervening time... maybe they aren't willing to go nearly as far to re-up Gallagher as they were a couple weeks ago. That is actually what the agent is saying. Why would Gallagher agree to ever reducing offers if he is a pending UFA? If his agent just says they will go test the market, what does Montreal do? Do they let that happen or are they proactive and move Gallagher for a decent return? Either possibility is reasonable, so it can't be dismissed as just posturing. Zhukini
Past his best before date, love the way he plays but like someone else said he's taken a lot of bumps and has a lot of miles on him. Unless it's something like Virtanen and a 5th I'd probably pass.

But if they go they’ll get a substantial return. Not the scraps you suggest
