Does LE retire if buried in minors?

Doesn't escrow only apply if the player is playing in the NHL? So this year I believe escrow is 20%, so Loui will receive 80% of his salary if he is in the NHL, but 100% if he is assigned to the AHL. That is a 25% raise for being demoted. And this year it looks like there will be no AHL. So that would mean he would get a 25% raise for sitting at home doing nothing? He would need to have a lot of pride to turn that down.

They should have to rent an apartment in Utica even if there is no AHL and wait it out there. B)

I expect that LE is on the team this year and does not get sent down.  JB doesn't want the scrutiny of having a 6m guy in the minors eating up 4.925 in cap while not playing.

Unpopular take as that might be I think that is what happens this year. To afford it either Ferland goes on LTIR or there is a buyout of somebody like Rous.  But LE stays up regardless.

His lack of skill is apparent but his underlying numbers are still decent. His contract is horrific but he appears to be playing better than a replacement level player despite his weak point totals. Also there was the comment by LE's agent that he could be moved with 50% retained which seems like a much more attractive offer than sending him down. The point I am trying to make is sending him down to save 1 million might not make sense.

If Ferland doesn't go on LTIR he is our best buyout option. Not only does this save us close to 2 million this year, but also 2.7 million the following year when we need to re-sign Hughes & Petey. The following years he adds 1 million to the cap for 3 seasons but we will have Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Luongo and top-four Edler off the books (assuming he is a bottom-pairing dman or retired by then).

Finally, a Tanner Pearson trade could gain us an asset. Dallas could be a good fit maybe Pearson + Benn for Johns + Comeau. Send Comeau to the minors. This upgrades our right side D and would open up 2 million in cap after the send down.

He does have 5 million reasons to stay. I would like to think he'd be more like Naslund and say I'm not playing to the level I expect of myself so I'm retiring. Then return to Sweden to play a few more years. I said earlier this season I hoped he'd have that pride in performance to retire in the offseason. But when it comes to a large sum of money (and $5m is nothing to sneeze at) that's a rare breed of player. Part of me would like to see him sent to the minors while the other side says I'd rather him sitting in the press box than a prospect that could be playing big minutes in the AHL improving his game. I'm still holding out hope he can be moved to Ottawa who has cap space to burn and could actually help their PK without being a financial burden. Even if it meant retaining $1m per. Alas, that's likely a pipedream.

Just because you send him to the minors doesn't mean you have to let him play.  Let him rot in Utica's press box and give his ice time to a player who actually wants to be an NHLer.

People seem to be forgetting that he's 35 now. There's no way someone so close to retirement turns down that kind of money, especially when it's clear that he won't be able to command that kind of contract anymore.

With regards to the Naslund example, buying him out at the time would've cost the Rangers a $3 million cap hit spread over two seasons (during an increasing cap iir). It was a more manageable situation.

Why he would want to remain with a team and fan base that doesn't want him is beyond me?

The guy isn't going to make this kind of money ever again in his life, doing anything else.  He's not even 40 yet and he has until this contract runs out to make most of what he will make to get him through the next 40 or 50 years.  Sure, there would be dignity and just retiring like Markus Naslund...but how many people are really going to do that?  Loui's not make a million dollars a year doing anything else from now until the end of his days.

The real question - will there even be AHL this year?

And if there is , our team could very well be in canada because of covid. Not much of a deterrent if he still gets to make his money close to home.

He could litterally just live off the interest and never spend a dime of the principle.  He would also be making over a million and a half a year just off an average mutual fund. The guy has zero money issues, and likely never will even with half of what he has made in his career in the NHL.

The fanbase gas swung so far against LE that I'm not sure JB wants to do that anymore.

I see less and less people sticking up for him around here.

Yeah this year the cost of Loui was tangible.  Dracula didn't re-sign Toffoli and that (hell, plus Stecher) can be linked directly to Loui's 6M on the books.  I think Jim's ready to play bad cop with Loui now and at least see if that goes anywhere.
