Playoff games played does not equal playoff performer.

Craig Ludwig player in 177 playoff games. It doesn’t mean he plays well in those games.

He’s at about a 60 point pace in the playoffs for a guy who’s supposed to be a captain and star player. Almost a ppg in the regular season. That’s a pretty steep drop off.He certainly chokes when needed the most.

Craig Ludwig was a great playoff performer.  He was a huge part of the D-corps in Montreal in the 86 and 89 runs to the Cup and then later on with Dallas.

The only way to play lots of playoff games is to win lots of playoff games so you keep playing playoff games.  Playoff games will be highly highly correlated with being a playoff performer.

Anyway, Thornton isn't the greatest playoff performer of all time or anything, but his playoff record and accomplishments are better than Sedins and WAY better than Markus Naslund.

When was the last time you saw a Toronto forward attempt to backcheck?

Not since the days of Phil the Thrill.

I think someone told him Seguin had a foot long in his pants and he misunderstood.

I think Ludwig was the guy who kind of melted his shin pads and flared them out to block shots.  That dude ate lots of pucks.

A guy who was charged with assaulting a police officer early in his career.

What better mentor for Matthews.

Didn’t know about that till I just googled it. So it sounded like it was some dust up in a bar in Toronto when he was 23 years old. He got pepper sprayed in the incident. He later apologized to the police department and did community service. Young and dumb I suppose. As long as no officers got hurt, it served him a nice learning lesson and we haven’t heard of anything else since.

Sharks sure won that trade couple years later. Say what you want about this guy but he had a great career and just might have something left in that tank.

Do you want Thornton or Spezza taking D zone face offs and killing penalties?

I see what you’re saying but they fill completely different roles. I’ll take Beagle for the role we need him for.

Thornton at 700k is a steal even at this stage of the game - Spezza less so much but still not bad at that price tag.  And to answer your question sure I wouldn’t mind that at all, or the points per sixty he still provides which would be more then most our  bottom six.  Future HHOFer going home is understandable but that flogging he’s taking on this thread is a tad brutal.   And of course the 2.3 million in cap space could find better use.   Heck I’d be stoked to have Spezza and Thornton as our 3/4 line centres at a combined 1.4 instead of 7.5ish ...

Yep.  And say what you want about SJs glory years but curiously over a 14 year period that spanned the WCE and Sedin peak era only they won more regular season games then us.   For a long time they were always good, and that started and ended with Joe Thornton.

I get people want to rip on it as it's the Leafs but used in the right way this a decent move for them. Their power play units will be interesting next year.

Their power play was not a problem though. They had the 6th best power play.

I get that they wanted to get bigger because of their series with Columbus but this was not the kind of bigger they needed. They got bigger and much slower throughout their lineup.

I get that Thornton is a big name that gets headlines, but this is not the same Thornton they’re getting. And put in a limited role I don’t expect he’ll be putting up many points.

My guess is they feel like they need more veteran leadership to help Tavares with some of the load. Which may or may not help I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

So, Leafs have four former 1st overalls for centers?

Tavares

Matthews

Thornton

Spezza

... Have Canucks ever had a former 1st overall on their roster? None are coming to mind. Owen Nolan was a tryout, but wasn’t signed.

Spezza was actually a 2nd overall.

Three of them are former captains of other franchise though.
