Their power play units will be interesting next year. So will their penalty kill. Even more 'interesting'. Hyman Matthews Nylander Mikheyev Tavares Marner Robertson Kerfoot Simmonds Vesey Thornton Spezza Ceci - their lead D penalty killer - is gone. Kapanen and Moore - two of their secondary penalty killers - are gone. Marner lead their forwards in pk ice time last year at 2:11/g. Mikheyev and Hyman - two other will be primary/secondary pk F remain.... Spezza killed 3 seconds of penalties a game.. Thornton 0 seconds in SJ. What's the point of hiring Manny Malhotra? Is he going to teach some old dogs new tricks at 37, 40 yrs of age? Simmonds 0 seconds in Buffalo, NJ, Nashville.... Nick Robertson has never played an AHL or NHL game... I guess the answer is Travis Boyd - the 27 yr old AHL tweener that killed 17 seconds/game in his small sample NHL stint last year (34 seconds in 18/19, 17th on the Caps...) Classic Dubas build. 1

kloubek
Makes sense to me. The cap hit is almost nothing, and he brings some more size and grit to their lineup which they so badly need. I think he will do alright there.
BlueDragon23
Signing a way past his prime veteran?? I mean he can still chip in, but he his wayyyy too slow for today’s NHL. Errr okay, you do you Toronto.

Toyotasfan
I like this quote by Craig Button. Been awhile since anything Thornton has done anything that’s mattered.

MoneypuckOverlord
I tell you guys this right now... If we signed him for lets say 800 000k, you will probably see guys like Friedman or Dregger with a so called backstory that no one knows, and say "it looks to me, no one wanted him, and Vancouver was the only team in the NHL that wanted him" type of bull $&!#. But because he signed with the Leafs you don't see Dregger trolling this signing, which was totally useless to the leafs. Dubas runs his team like NHL 2020.

If Joe Thornton had signed in Van on this contract I would have been happy. Dude still put up 82 points in his last 143 games (92 in 162 including playoffs). Obviously he's taken a huge decline but as a 4th liner/PP specialist/top-9 injury fill-in I would've been happy. Give some nice saucers to our 4th line sniper Tyler Motte . Plus, 700k is buriable in the minors if it doesn't work out
