Thanks for posting the article @Fred65 and @Honeydew!

Agreed, I am glad that Hannay was able to carve out another career in business and congrats on his pending deal with two Dragons.

Best of luck to the trio on their partnership and looks like his second career has him connecting back to Vancouver/BC once again!

Good for him.  Some guys have a hard time moving on from the dream when water finds its level as an adult.  Every town has at least one kid phenom that people will bet their life is going to the NHL and he might not even make it to the ECHL.  Making it to the ECHL or any lower pro level gets laughed at by NHL fans but it's no small achievement.

It can also be a tough living playing in the ECHL or lower.  I had some coworkers who were former pros and they were just scraping by in lower leagues (ie. SPHL) and it took them awhile to give up their dream of hockey in the big leagues.  Especially with the high risk of injury and time commitment, playing minor hockey professionally is just not for everybody.

Average salary in the CFL is $65,000 Canadian. Now that's truly playing for the love of the game. And it's pretty much to be expected that you have a regular job in the offseason.

101 years ago even Baseball players were getting crap wages.

Great story to hear. I wish him all the best. That said after perusing his website I'm not really sure what separates his company from a bunch of others. It seems like pretty standard stuff, flannels, trucker hats, etc. Then again I'm not really a fashionable guy so what do I know.

65,000 is still more than the average joe makes. Hell, a lot of people have to go into student debt and get a job they don't like just to make that much. You aren't going to be driving a Lamborghini but I don't think its a sacrifice to make that playing a game you enjoy for part of the year.

Years of training. Maintaining your fitness, risk of injury. Blow your knee out and it's all over. Considering a lot of athletes usually only get 5-10 years on a career.

Not much of a pension either. As I said that's why a lot of players are smart to plan for life after chasing a dream.

Yeah I didn't say it wasn't a difficult job. I'm just saying that framing that level of financial compensation for playing a game part of the year as some sort of sacrifice is silly. There are plenty of jobs that are very grueling and hard on your body that aren't nearly as enjoyable or pay as well.

It makes you put things into perspective.  NHL players are absolutely the top 1% of all hockey players in the entire world.  Being the top 5% means you're fighting for an AHL/KHL/ECHL/etc.

Whenever some question if NHL players should be getting as much money as they do... they are at the pinnacle of their field, the same as the top 1% of CEOs, top 1% of surgeons, movies stars, musicians, etc.

Very true. The league minimum is more than I'll make in 7 years... Before tax. And I didnt grow up playing electrician with my friends wishing I could get signed to a construction site.

These are the guys that made the most talented athlete in your home town get an office job.
