Brent Seabrook says he'll be ready to contribute next season and is motivated to prove it after having his 2019-20 campaign cut short by multiple surgeries.

"I feel like I'm 19 years old again trying to make the team," the Chicago Blackhawksdefenseman told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun earlier this week. "I'm skating and doing treatment and doing all these extra things here and there. Just trying to get prepared and ready, get the flexibility back - which was a battle for a while - and get the skating back, which has been great. The last two-to-three weeks I've felt really good on the ice. … It's been incredible."

Seabrook added that he has no plans to quit despite his injuries, advanced age, and declining production.

"I'm excited for training camp," he said. "I'm excited for the opportunity to get back out there and show everybody what I got. I'm not done playing hockey. I get that 35 is old in the sports world, but I don't feel old, I still feel young."

The blue-liner was limited to 32 games last season. He underwent three procedures over a six-week span beginning in late December, having his right shoulder repaired followed by both of his hips. The 15-year veteran, who played his final game of the campaign Dec. 15, tried to return for the playoffs but failed to crack Chicago's postseason roster.

Seabrook collected only four points while posting a 41.22 expected goals for percentage and a 41.53 scoring chances for rate during his abbreviated 2019-20 season.

He's spent his entire career with the Blackhawks, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013, and 2015. However, Seabrook's playing time has steadily declined in the years since those titles.

SEASON SEABROOK ATOI

2016-17 21:54
2017-18 20:12

Seabrook has four years left on his contract at a cap hit of $6,875,000. The Blackhawks parted with two key members of their championship core this offseason, as goaltender Corey Crawford signed with the New Jersey Devils and forward Brandon Saad was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.

Good for him to want to keep going. Lol!

Not like he has a choice. Sure he can retire, but that’s about 28M left on his contract. No one is walking away from that.

I can’t see how he could play well anymore. Pretty much a PR stunt and definitely a very bad contract for years to come.

It'll be a great story if he can do it, but though he feels like he's 19-years old again, the fact of the matter is that he isn't. We'll see how we does.

We’ll see.

At least the Hawks got some Cups in the beginning unlike our current salary cap anchor in LE. Instead of Cups,  LE scored on his own net in that first game and became the epitome of being an “empty net specialist” and a star of “little things” :picard:

Funny, Hawks fans have been wishing he'd prove the doubters wrong for a while now. At his age and given his injury history the odds aren't stacked in his favour though, particularly given that goaltending looks to be a big question mark going into next season.

Although I despised the Hawks (no longer do/care as they've withered away) I, too, always liked him.  He's friends of a friend (who attended his wedding) and so felt connected somehow through that.  Does seem like a nice, sincere person and I wish him all the best moving forward.  Would be nice to see him get some extra mileage....just not against us.

Makes me happy we're at the stage we are with this young, exciting team of ours that's moving in the right direction.  Can't wait to get things going again....

Good for him for trying, but the Canucks dodged a bullet the moment he signed this contract. I know people who are friends with his family/relatives in the lower mainland that if Seabrook becomes a UFA, he would actually consider playing here in Vancouver for his hometown team. At the time when he sign this contract, he was still pretty good, I have no doubt JB would have given him more money to get him here. We totally dodged the bullet.

The Blackhawks were the youngest team in the playoffs.

If he was willing to consider retiring in a couple of years I'd trade LE for him.  Seabrook at least has a chance of playing like an NHLer if sheltered, is a positive influence in the room unlike our $6 million floater, and plays a position and style we could use.  Those extra couple of years are ugly though.

That contract is such a killer. Still has 2 more years with an NMC, so they have to protect him in the expansion draft.

After those 2 years, he has a $4M signing bonus at the beginning of 2022-23, so there’s no way he’s stopping on his own accord before that. After that, he has only $5.5M left over 2 years, with likely high escrow, so he may just retire at that point.
