Cases are way up in Canada as a whole, but I don't see deaths, which are rising, but not at the same pace as new cases are. Hopefully this is a sign that the vaccine roll-out is already doing some work since seniors aren't getting as badly hit (compared to the previous wave)? 

I think the death numbers being limited has a lot to do with the elderly in care homes being largely vaccinated.  Those were most of the deaths.

 

But yeah, the rise in the hospitals is worrying.

Yes, that's why there have been arguments to roll out vaccinations at random instead of targeting specific age groups, especially since seniors tend to be less mobile and isolated. If you vaccinate at random, you could be more likely to immunize a transmitter.

It seems like things are escalating pretty quickly in India with them getting hit pretty hard with the second wave. They had over 210,000 new cases today.

I am concerned with India over the next few months.  I think Brazil is in really bad shape.  Their reported daily case count is usually in the 80,000 range.  But close to 3500 daily deaths.  They should pass America in death by summer if something doesn't change.

A new "double mutant" variant of the coronavirus has been detected from samples collected in India. 

Scientists are checking if the variant, where two mutations come together in the same virus, may be more infectious or less affected by vaccines.

What is a "double mutant" variant?

Like all viruses, the coronavirus keeps changing in small ways as it passes from one person to another.

The vast majority of these mutations are inconsequential and don't alter the way the virus behaves.

But some mutations trigger changes in the spike protein that the virus uses to latch on to and enter human cells - these variants could potentially be more infectious, cause more severe disease or evade vaccines. 

Vaccines against respiratory pathogens like SARS-Cov2, the virus that causes Covid-19, protect us by stimulating our bodies to make antibodies. 

The best type to protect us are the "neutralising antibodies" because they block the virus from being able to enter the human cells.

If that's the case they need to ban flights from those countries. None of this quarantine BS coming here, straight up ban anyone trying to find from there. Same with Brazil. Even UK and South Africa at this point. We came keep on having cases go up and wrecking our economy just to satisfy other countries and be nice and kind to others. Time to focus on our own people only at this point.

You shouldn’t have any UK people on flights anyway as unless we have a good reason (reasons are proscribed) then we are not allowed out of the country

That's how we got the UK variant couple months ago was some guy coming back from vacation there.

June is going to be nuts.  50 million, with 300,000 J&J is enough to fully vaccinate 25.15 million.  About 84% of Canadians 18+
