The one big ?  for everyone is of course the US.   The issues it has with its healthcare and the number of people with preconditions are not issues that were relevant to even China - they got more beds per 1000 people and of course the precondition levels are totally different.  My guess is that tomorrow if Canada stops US entry in and out it is to stop a rush on Canada - sound crazy?   The US response to these things is always pretty bad (e.g. Katrina).

Tough to say, Dr Henry and Canada’s chief public health officer Theresa Tam have said that closing the borders will not do anything at this point because the community spread has already started.

And the US might face a more difficult situation than China or Italy because many people in their country have pre existing health conditions having to do with obesity affecting 42% of their population.

It’s could be a dire situation for them but I hope not.

SARS which is very different than Corona but it broke out from Nov 2002 and lasted until July 2003 - this is my second lock down.   We are going to be living with this for a long time. To count by years is probably the best way to measure its life and impact on countries.  I think you don't quite understand what has happened.  It 'may' appear to go away in the summer but it will be back again.

SARS is not contagious as COVID19.

Besides, SARS was contained while COVID19 has long way to go.  Also, SARS was not declared a pandemic, COVID19 is a pandemic.

i Work at a casino in Toronto, they just told us the casino will be shutting down for 3 to 4 weeks.  Great Canadian gaming will not pay us a cent.  We have to go through EI at 55% of our pay.

Sucks.  This company sucks! And it’s a Vancouver based company!!

I was in Asia for SARs.  My point to the OP was that this virus is not going to disappear in a month and will be around like SARS was.   SARs for the record caused massive disruption in Asia.  One reason Taiwan has been so successful in dealing with Corona is it learned its lessons with SARs.  Corona is a game changer for countries like Canada

Exactly, it is in Canada.  The point being that one scenario is Americans who cannot get access to meds, proper health care and so forth decide Canada is the answer. Nothing to do with containing but rather preventing a potential massive movement up to Canada.

I woke from a red wine induced slumber. Checked my phone and saw a message from my sister, a nurse. Canada will declare a state of emergency tomorrow.

We all need to batten down the hatches.

This will be around for a while. We need to stick together. Rely on one another.

Humanity is experiencing something all at once. Remember that. Help those who need it.

Been hearing the same thing abt Declaring a state of emergency. What does it all mean exactly?

Well make a stink about it to the media like sports and Tim Hortons people have and we will see what happens. Apparently people don't realize every company in Canada cant absorb that cost of paying employees. Gonna happen with construction pretty quick here, loads of people will get laid off and go on EI, I know I will be pretty quick here most likely.

Well, I guess technically it means invoking the Emergencies Act (formerly the War Measures Act), something that has only happened three times in Canadian history (WWI, WWII, and the October Crisis of 1970).

In this case, it would be for a Public Welfare Emergency, which you can read all about here: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/e-4.5/page-1.html

This would give the government extraordinary powers to take action to address COVID-19.

Just speculating, I’d expect they’d shut down most non-essential public services. We’d likely see what’s already happening in many cities become nationwide policy: shutting down community centres, libraries, swimming pools, ice rinks, etc.

I’d expect schools will remain closed past spring break.

They could also order temporary closures of private businesses like stores, shopping malls, bars, restaurants, etc, while ensuring places like hospitals, pharmacies, gas stations, and grocery stores remain open.

They might restrict travel and/or establish quarantine zones, if deemed necessary.

It would also free up funds for the government to use to directly address the emergency, whether that’s paying for medical services and devices not currently covered under the healthcare system, or offering financial assistance/compensation for affected businesses and individuals, and/or a creating some form of overall stimulus package, etc.

Lots of possibilities. Really only depends how far they deem necessary to take it, because technically speaking, once the Act is invoked, the government has a lot of power, to the point where they are allowed to temporarily suspend our Charter freedoms. Of course, that’s a really negative and “tinfoil hatty” way of stating things. They’re not going to turn Canada into some dystopian nightmare. They’re just likely (assuming the rumoured State of Emergency happens) going to undertake some fairly sweeping and drastic actions to protect the public, which is most likely a very good thing for the government to do right now.

It just might not be much fun.

Ireland has shut down pubs, but the sheeple still plan to celebrate paddys day by basically hosting covid 19 parties at their house.

I expect ireland to go on lockdown this week if not tonight. They have told irish citizens vacationing in spain that they have until midnight Thursday to get home or they cant guarantee when they will get home.

Yesterday before they closed the pubs, people were out on the sidewalk drinking their pints.
