Hospitalisation are going up it’s just with a different group, it’s not reported as much but I trust my wife’s ITU nurse friends who have been working the COVID wards in two of our local hospitals

Ah ok.  He was just saying he's not worried until hospitalizations get out of hand.

It’s already heading that way and it’s now likely to be a case of when not if.

Cases in the US starting to go back up again...

Hopefully those checks to make sure only fully vaccinated people are in coming once the border re-opens are tight with no loopholes...

Ugh.

The red necks in Missouri are intimidating those who want to get vaccinated at clinics as well as the workers that staff them. I'm hoping for a culling of the herd, down in Ozark Country. The cases in Hawaii were up again yesterday, sigh. I sure hope the Federal Gov't has no intentions of opening that border anytime soon. My question would be how can you prove these folks have been totally vaccinated?

Eww,

They're gonna starting letting Americans into our country by mid August. Yuck.

They have to be fully vaccinated.

I wouldn't worry too much, the Trumper/antivaxxers don't want to come up here to commie country anyway.

So the IT'S EXPERIMENTAL crowd will have a few more months that they can trot out that talking point.  By next year, it will be much, much easier to mandate vaccination.  Sad that we will have to wait this long.

So next year, children under 12 will be able to receive the vaccines.  By then, the vaccines should also receive full approval (post above).  Plus, it will have passed the 1 year anniversary of adults in the general public receiving their first doses of the shots, and possibly their second dose.  That means by the time kids under 12 can get the shot, we will have safety data for individuals exceeding 12 months.  The whole "long term side effects" crowd will have their answer.  People who still refuse next year are irrational morons.

After emergency use authorization, the agency hopes to move quickly to full approval.

I mean, they are close enough to see each other from their backyards up there

Try being as close as sitting on opposite sides of a chess board.

Three members of the Indonesian delegation at the 2021 FIDE World Cup have tested positive for Covid-19. GM Fabiano Caruana was awarded a win when his opponent GM Susanto Megaranto's test result was positive. GM Levon Aronian forfeited his game for having fever symptoms and announced on Friday that he had withdrawn from the tournament.

Despite strong measures and clear regulations to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, the World Cup couldn't avoid being hit by cases of Covid-19. Three members from Indonesia have now tested positive, affecting two matches.

GM and chess journalist Ian Rogers reports that Head of Delegation Kristianus Liem was diagnosed first. Before the first round, IM Mohamad Ervan got the bad news as well and had to forfeit his match with GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov.

The third was Megaranto, who learned about his positive test result during his game with Caruana, which was immediately stopped and declared a win for the American player. Following procedures, both players were immediately isolated.

Without mentioning his name, FIDE communicated via social media that Megaranto had been tested negative three times in Sochi before a fourth test came out positive. This test result was supposed to arrive before 13:00 p.m. local time but was delayed by a few hours. FIDE is investigating why this happened.

It is not immediately clear what the situation is regarding the Caruana-Megaranto match. According to Chess.com's photographer Maria Emelianova, Megaranto will remain under medical supervision, and it's not known yet whether the second game will be played. Caruana will take another test on Friday. He is showing no symptoms but is self-isolating in his hotel room.

Megaranto is the only Indonesian player in the open section. The two female players from Indonesia, IM Irine Sukandar and IM Medina Warda Aulia, haven't had symptoms and haven't tested positive. Sukandar has taken a lot of effort to confirm that she doesn't have the virus.

Meanwhile, two-time winner Aronian didn't even show up for his game with GM Bobby Cheng (Australia). The Armenian grandmaster had some symptoms of fever earlier this week. Even though he felt well on Thursday, it was decided that he wouldn't play in order to not risk the safety of other players. He has now announced on Facebook that he won't play anymore:

Alongside all the Covid turmoil, the first day of the second round saw a lot of great chess. Among many other top grandmasters, World Champion Magnus Carlsen "entered the building" and beat Croatian grandmaster Sasa Martinovic, who was celebrating his 30th birthday.

Looks like the easing of restrictions isn't causing a spike, thankfully.

Give it a week.  We've only just opened things up (stuff like casinos, etc.) without mask requirements.  We can sort of breath easier if we can make it to the end of the month without an uptick.

Don't get me wrong, I really hope our cases stay down.

I ain't relaxing until we get closer to 70 plus percent fully vaccinated and we have prolonged low cases.  The fact that we have far too many people, some/many who are unvaccinated, who are celebrating like we've kicked this thing is troubling.

Yes it's good news but remember in the province I'm in I believe we were down to 6 cases last June. This is the worst conditions for the virus. When it gets colder it can live longer. 4c to 10c I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Vaccines are doing their thing.  :)

Yeah brother, trust in medicine. They're our brothers and sisters. Try setting a tib fib compound fracture without medical help. Not fun.

I really wish we kept the mask order in place until we got two weeks past 70% fully vaccinated.

Yep, me too. I'm still wearing mine, it's second nature. Back to Heffy's point I think we should be back on restriction at the end of Sept - Oct close to flu season when our guard will down and it will hit back hard. Two to three weeks of discipline will hopefully stunt it into submission. Or would that not be a useful precautionary tactic? I'm not a doctor or prognosticator at all.
