Heard on the news it’s bad up in a North Van nursing home.  All the guests, who visited there over the past couple weeks are spreading it.  Everyone they came into contact with is spreading it.  The employees of the nursing home are spreading it.  That’s bad news.

Coronavirus update from Italy - hospitals overwhelmed, not treating all other emergencies

Tue 10 Mar 2020 22:15:31 GMT

Information via Jason Van Schoor, a UK based Registrar in Anaesthesia & ICM

Passing on an update from an intensivist/A&E consultant currently in northern Italy:

In brief:
  • current situation is difficult to imagine
  • hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity
  • We've stopped all routine
  • all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes
  • hundreds of pts with severe respiratory failure
  • Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed
There is, unfortunately, much more, here: @jasonvanschoor

China offers to send Italy 1000 lung ventilators, 2 million face masks, 20,000 protective suits and 50,000 test kits.

Tue 10 Mar 2020 21:11:47 GMT

Italy was quick to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak in China, sending supplies to the country.

China is responding in kind,

China's embassy in Italy:
  • The Chinese government is ready to do its part as a sign of deep thanks to Italy for helping the country in times of need.

2 more presumptive cases via community contact in BC.

Now are these 2 related to the 1st case, where they are from the same community with 1 spreader going around infecting others?

Or are we now looking at 3 different communities with the possibility of 3 different spreaders going around?

All we have is that they all live in the "Fraser Health region"

I would assume they are not linked to the 1st case, otherwise they probably wouldn't be stating via community contact.

One spreader, once they infect others, becomes more than exponential.  Imagine one spreader, who is still not aware they are infected, going into a Mall, and shopping for a couple hours.  They would (potentially) insect hundreds.  Then those hundreds go about their daily activities.  The spread rate could be insane.  That’s why Italy shut down its entire country, and bordering countries won’t let anyone in from Italy.  The spread can become crazy fast.

Looks like we’re all going to get the Coronavirus at some point.

Just keep in mind to keep distant from elders.

For all I know I've already had it. I returned from Southeast Asia in January with a cold, before any advice was given about self isolation. At that point you were only considered a risk if you'd visited Wuhan. I worked from home for over a week to stay on the safe side anyway, as I would with any cold.

I'm convinced half of Europe has it - their symptoms are either so mild they think it's a common cold or they have none whatsoever.

The prospective strain on the health service is worrying, but I returned from Austria today where things are refreshingly calm. They've put appropriate distancing measures in place and the Austrian people are sensible enough not to panic and horde everything they can. Same goes for the Swiss. Meanwhile, the UK and US is in a state of hysteria due to a moronic populace and a sensationalist media that thrives on generating fear.

^^^^^^ It is expected Washington State is going to enact the same measures as in some European countries hardest hit with Covid-19 and ban mass gatherings of more than 1000 people.

So how do the Seattle Mariners start their season? Just play in an empty stadium?

Canada commits C$1 billion to coronavirus response

Wed 11 Mar 2020 13:22:40 GMT

Canada unveils some COVID-19 measures

  • Fund will support provinces
  • Includes $275m for research
  • To waive waiting period for employment insurance
  • Trudeau says the government is prepared to take further measures to combat outbreak if need be
This sounds small and woeful after what the UK just announced. The UK economy is about 1.6x the size of Canada and did 30x more in specific coronavirus measures. That's not an entirely fair comparison because Canadian provinces has some large fiscal power and responsibilities but the point stands.

Heard it crowds of 250 people.  Aren’t some church congregations bigger?  Weddings?
