Those kids used to come wreck our Parksville sandcastle weekends. Trying to beat everyone up. Who gives steroids to high schoolers? Then again, they were pretty good at hockey. 

 

BTW, Nanoose Bay does not exist. No need for anyone to try to find it. If you come for a visit and turn right after getting off the ferries in Nanaimo, do not stop until you see goats  on a roof. Then you should pull over for an ice cream.

I grew up in Nanoose Bay, went to elementary school on Morrelo road, How's that for some ancient history. i remember those fun sandcastle brawls, some of my friends were the best scrapers in Parksville back then. Those riots that happened were crazy, what happened was the beer gardens and Dance at the hall ended at the same time. Thousands of drunk people leaving at once.

 My first memory of a Parksville beach brawl was when my dad coached Jr. B Box Lacrosse, this was in the mid/late 70's and i was just a little kid. Parksville went right to the finals that year and played Bella Coola i think it was. Anyway the other team had a ringer, a huge, at least 250 pounder around 18 or 19, His jr A team was eliminated so he was eligible to play for the jr B team. He ran through our team and Parksville lost the Championship game. The fighting started in the Arena and carried out to the parking lot, it was absolute mayhem and one of my earliest memory's. My Uncle, who was assisstant coach, drove by and said something to the kid and his family. The kid nailed my Uncle right in the face with the wood end of his Lacrosse stick and his dad and uncle pulled my uncle out of his vehicle, held his arms behind his back while the 250 kid light him up. My dad, who was at least 270 at the time, saw this, ran across the parking lot, spun the kid by the shoulder and landed a massive haymaker. KTFO the kid, then beat up his dad and uncle. Like hockey, Box Lacrosse was crazy back then. It's a much different world we live in now.

I guarantee we know some of the same people. I know you are 4 years older than me. I recently had two of the toughest old Parksville dudes help me with some renos....both 4 years older then me. One went on to be a US Marine (cause he is dual) and he was a world ranked Mauy Thai fighter at one point.

Wow, that's cool. I knew Jason'Kicking ' Bird. He was the Northern pacific Mauy Thai HW Champ back in the 90's. I lived in Whiskey Creek for awhile and there was a lot of kids into it. 

I got another great lacrosse story from the 80's. I had a couple cousins that played for my dads jr.b team in Parksville. One of them made the Nanaimo Timbermen and he was a wild man. Scraped almost every game, he got into a stick swinging incident, the other guy hit him in the head first and cousin got him too good. he had blood coming out of his ear. needles to say, my cousin was suspened for the rest of the season. During his suspension, him, one of my other cousins and two other buddys one t to watch the same team play the Timbermen. They got drunk and harrassed the other team and when the game ended, they met them in the parking lot. 4 guys were beating up that whole team. my cuz was fighting two guys while backing up, he tripped on something and the coach of the other team saw this, ran over and kicked his face in while wearing danton's My cuzes cheekbone was shattered and in fragments. A few weeks after that on his brothers 19th birthday, my uncles got him falling down drunk, which was tradition for all of us when we turned 19. My cuz, the one 19th birthday one, got too drunk and they were trying to put him to bed when he round house kicked my other cuz right in the same spot. I think there was another brawl that weekend too. I have alot of story's about my wild family. Those aren't even the best ones, just the lacrosse ones.

Another random coincidence. The Muay Thai guy that I mentioned has a 13 year old son ( actually worked on the deck/reno with us) that is national level lacrosse. One of the best prospects in Canada. Apparently lots of interest in him from the States too.

Cool, my great nephew plays for the Parksville Sharks, he also plays hockey with the Parksville Outlaws. My other great nephew played hockey on the Yale Lions, midget team. Same team that Virtanen played on. He's going to move up to jr A next season, committed to play in SJHL. He played in 6 games in the BCHL last year. I can watch every game on hockeytv.com

Teen workers 'disturbed' after man flies into rage over order at Wendy's drive-thru

Mounties on Vancouver Island are searching for a suspect after a disgruntled fast food customer attacked a Wendy's drive-thru this week, frightening the teenage workers inside.

West Shore RCMP say the man tore the Plexiglas from the window of the restaurant's Colwood location on Tuesday night after he discovered that staff had forgotten to put mustard on his burger.

Const. Nancy Saggar said the suspect had already received his order and parked his vehicle in the parking lot to eat it, when he walked back to the drive-thru area and began screaming obscenities at the staff and smashing the window.

 

"What's most concerning to us is that the people working there were all youths," Saggar said. "You should be able to trust wherever you work that you will be safe, and this should just not happen."

She said no one was injured, but all of the workers were 16 or 17 years old and the incident left them feeling "very disturbed."

The suspect is described as a white man with a reddish brown beard, driving a blue or grey hatchback. 

Burgers don't all include mustard

Staff at the Wendy's said they couldn't comment on the incident.

According to descriptions on Wendy's online menu, the bulk of the chain's burger offerings don't include mustard. Police did not say what type of burger the suspect had ordered.

Police say he threw the Plexiglas barrier under another vehicle in the parking lot and drove off.

The suspect is wanted for mischief and causing a disturbance.

Anyone with information should call the West Shore RCMP non-emergency line at 250-474-2264, or report anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

We, concerned citizens of British Columbia, respectfully but urgently demand that COVID-19 diagnostic testing in B.C. be drastically increased without delay. B.C.’s per capita testing rate is now approximately 40 percent lower than the Canadian average, as our province continues to employ less than 40 percent of its daily testing capacity. This is unacceptable.

To protect the most vulnerable members of our society and lower the risk of a deadly second wave of COVID-19, B.C. officials must heed our Prime Minister’s call for “massive, widespread testing.” We must immediately begin to employ our full testing capacity of almost 7,000 tests per day. As has been done in other Canadian provinces, testing criteria in B.C. must be expanded to allow for the testing of a large number of people without symptoms as a means of detecting asymptomatic carriers of the disease, also known as “silent spreaders.”

I used to live in Haida Gwaii as a kid. We'd take the ferry to Rupert and then down to Port Hardy. Port Hardy wasn't all bad. At least has some good fishing. Duncan's only redeeming quality is the big old hockey stick you can see from the highway.

Who is this change.org and what do they know about testing?  Our PHO has repeated time and time again that testing asymptomatic people is not reliable.  The tests that they have now work best when people are showing symptoms.  They only test for asymptomatic carriers only when they identify clusters and need to do trace testing.  They continually test the same people over and over again when they know that they have had a high chance of exposure.  A person may have it and test negative one day and then test positive the next day.  Testing completely random people is a waste of tests.  They have started or are about to start serology testing which tests for anti bodies to the virus which if positive would mean that you had the virus at some point.  These while more accurate have some issues as well.

 

The reason why we are testing so few people is because we don't have a lot of people going in with symptoms.

 

Try and figure out why provinces like Quebec and Ontario test more than we do.

Not utilizing our full BC testing capacity is senseless.  HIgh risk occupations such as taxi drivers could all be tested...

Test every teacher......     Test , test and test.

I think that's their point.  They need to identify the asymptomatic.

Didn't you read what I just said?  Bonnie Henry says that testing Asymptomatic people is NOT RELIABLE.  ITS A BLOODY WASTE OF TESTING.

 

Who do you listen to?  A doctor that has a ton of experience with access to info from other experienced specialists out in the world or some random special interest group?

 

 

 

Go ahead test 4 or 5 thousand more a day.  You may find a couple that are positive.  They are told to go home and self isolate.  What about the ones the test missed?  Those people are told they don't have it and then they go out and do whatever they want and infect others and start another cluster of infections.

I understand what you’re saying, however, there really aren’t any clusters of infected out in the general public(public transmission)(person to person transmission) that require you to feel so agitated. BC’s done a fine job thus far, and I hope WE continue to do so.

 

Wear masks when out shopping. Wash your hands every time you come home from being out. Use sanitizer when going from store to store, and keep social distance from others.

I actually agree with you.  Just tired of explaining to people why the province is testing far less than other provinces.  Its because we've done a good job and don't have many to test.  Wasting tests on random people showing no symptoms does not tell you much.  

 

I said this before, just as important as finding a vaccine is developing more accurate and efficient tests so that we could test a greater proportion of the population.  That in itself will allow us to get back to a more normal way of life.  Until then, we still must remain vigilant.

I think the anti-body testing will help health officials understand where the clusters were and where/how they could occur in the fall when the inevitable 2nd wave occurs.
