Canada pushes back on U.S. Congress members’ call to reopen border amid coronavirus

A bipartisan group of 29 federal lawmakers led by New York representatives Blaine Higgins and Elise Stefanik sent a letter to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf late last week, urging both countries to "immediately craft a comprehensive framework for phased reopening of the border."

"Our absolute priority is the health and safety of Canadians," Katherine Cuplinskas said in an email. "That is why we want to be clear that decisions about Canada's border are made by Canadians, for Canadians."

Love that response.

I think the main complaint is that he isn't a "real scientist", so anything he says is automatically discredited.....

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell. Worked at Boeing. Executive Director of The Planetary Society. Involved in Mars Rover missions.

Yeah, no credentials whatsoever.....

You know how it goes.....anyone promoting the idea that man made Climate Change is real, must be discredited at all costs.....

Fresh Sockeye salmon is available in the Stores right now.

One of the great movements in civilization was going from hunter gatherer to farming, domesticating grains and animals. In fishing, it seems to me that we still are in the hunter gatherer mentality. I am for changing all commercial fishing to farms, ON LAND, not in the water. The science is there to do it. Then the hunter gatherers could be the sports fishing. It would boom, and our tourism industry would increase.

Didn't you hear Deb? Bill Nye is a socialist libtard commie now...or something like that?

I guess it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out masks are good, no masks are bad.

And if a rich reality TV star can be President and not wear a mask why can't a geeky TV science "promoter" tell us TO wear a mask?  Seems fair.

Hasn't seen TRUMP in over a month, and not briefed in 2.  Kinda telling.

Fauci says he hasn’t briefed Trump in two months as Covid-19 cases rise

President said public health expert ‘made a lot of mistakes’ while nearly 3.2 million have contracted the coronavirus

My Dad lived like this for years before cancer struck....

He hunted, fished and grew potatoes, tomatoes, peas, strawberries, apples, onions, carrots, beets, etc...  In his back yard...all organically grown.

That’s really sad I’m sorry for you loss Deb.     Growing and harvesting your own food has many rewards and we are so fortunate to live in a country where natural resources can still proved wildlife for food.   I’m not much of a hunter for sport - but can appreciate the buzz some folks get it because as far as fishing goes there is nothing more exciting then watching your rod tip go down.  Thousands of tourist hunters come from all over the world to hunt in Canada - a lot from Germany and the US and pay a lot to do it.   Black Bear on the Island are the largest in the world (bigger then some breeds of Grizzly) and the population is very healthy... largest Elk in the world too but only a few hunters get each year (on the island) - both are delicious if you know what your doing - better then pork and beef.     For me it’s all about the meat - it can be smoked, canned and Vacuumed sealed to last the year ... and better for you...a relatively small investment to get all the red meat your family needs if you have good access and or are willing to take the time.   We are so extremely fortunate to live where we do was my main point.   Getting  outside and into nature is rewarding just by itself - adding a cooler full of fish or a couple hundred pounds of wild game is a bonus.   Used to rent a charter once a year with a buddy, catch our limit and each come home with 200lbs of salmon and halibut ... well worth the $1000 .... If you can’t do this you don’t know where and it’s a secret ha ha ... as far as veggies go grew up on fresh ones in the summer - and have had my own garden since I was 20...first one was only 10 x 12 in Victoria ( not a great climate for one) which fed all my roommates plus my another 4 people .... by rotating and staggering it a little.   Now it’s 15 x 100...we make salsa and marrinaire sauce for the next year - can pickled cukes, carrots, beans and beets (60 jars approx) ... freeze beans and corn too (two medium/large cobs is the same as a bag of green giant corn BTW - culled has of course) ... potatoes we eat until March  are stored in cold storage - just like the ones you buy at the supermarket... if done right you want and need not 95% of your veggies and spices ... dry our own herbs too (5 times more potent the stuff you buy at the store).   Garlic ... a very long list.   Again I’m saying this because for a generation that’s so concerned about the environment and what they put in their bodies .... that’s all but abandoned how things used to be food wise I find both ironic and more then a little sad.    We are so fortunate to live where we do.  Barely touched on the ocean either ... clams, shrimp, crab (it’s crazy easy to catch and eat as much crab as you want if you have access to the ocean).... not many countries have the luxury we do.  Even condos that have a patio can produce quite a lot of tomatoes,  cukes, beans and herbs...

Oh my ..... I didn't word this well.  Thank you so much...Dad is thankfully a survivor but had to give up his vegetable garden as it was too much upkeep.  Mom and Dad both had cancer at the same time...we lost Mom.  The garden was just too much for me during it all, so it just started going to weed.  He did it all...even composting and making really fertile soil.  I took it all for granted back then but now realize how amazing it was/he is.

My Dad and brother have never ever sport hunted...it's all for "food".  No pictures, no stories...just go out there in order to fill the freezer.  They also had a smoker.

My brother still fishes and usually catches his limit too.  He knows some of those secret spots.  :)

I love that you started gardening so early on....my Dad is teaching my kids how (too).  Such a valuable thing to know...glad the schools are starting to reflect that with "community gardens".  I love how you make use of what you grow...it takes time to get used to the rhythm of it all (harvest then do something to preserve the food).

Is garlic easy/hard?  I live in a townhouse but would love to learn how to grow my own...use it in pretty much everything.  I am currently growing kale, basil, raspberries, chives, cilantro, lettuce.

And this is on topic to me....as this pandemic is highlighting....we all should be better prepared in this world.  Think about choices we make and how to do things better.  As mass consumers, we could be in trouble if the food chain is interrupted.  It's a great conversation to have....thanks for a really great comment.
