He just told Kuzma he's coming to camp to earn a spot.  He didn't want to be away from his family that long - it's no longer a bubble environment where players are kept away from their families.

I think its actually going to be a very comparative camp for bottom 6 spots, I'd wager he starts the year on the taxi squad.

I have to laugh at how determined some posters are to give away millions of dollars of other people's money. I would bet that many of these posters consider their own jobs to be entitlements and are significantly overpaid (but would never admit it) for what they do.

Newsflash: neither LE nor Baer is likely to walk away from millions of dollars, any more than you would.

Why can't Aquilini dish out the 5 mill or so he's owed, as a paid salary to work as an "advisor" like Florida did with Lu?  On condition Loui retires? His pay would fall outside of the cap then.

Play hard ball.  Tell him he's going on a one way trip to Utica. No inclusion on the "taxi squad".  And with COVID protocols, he probably will ride Utica buses all next season, unless he takes the deal.

We are stuck with paying 2 Lu's for nothing.

You don't think the league wouldn't punish the Canucks for circumventing the cap so blatantly?  We followed the flippin' rules the last time with Luongo *AND* got the contract approved by the league.  Then it was alleged some former ex-NHL GM whispered in the ears of Bettman and we got penalized for a contract they gave the 'ok' on.

Markus Näslund did but he already had a good job lined up in Sweden.

Given the state of the world economy, I seriously doubt that's an option for LE or Baer.

The league better not dare after they let Florida do it with Lu.

Interesting read on Sportsnet

So, for example, the Vancouver Canucks could theoretically move someone like Loui Eriksson to the taxi squad after he passes waivers and have a cap savings on his deal by replacing him with a player who is on a league minimum contract

Perfect year to get another year of this guy off the books. Thank the hockey gods we only need to see 56 games and not 82 games.

He will go down as one of the worst Canucks in history with Messier.

38 goals in 245 games - 24M = 639K per goal

Can't wait to say good riddance.

What? Messier was a legend!

Except Lu isn’t paid his player salary. In order to have a club role not circumventing the cap, the role offered must be at market level at an entry-level salary for a comparable position in the league.

Opting out costs him 4M.  Can't see how the league would allow him to retain the 3M in bonus and opt out.  Would probably trigger an investigation if players take their bonus and then opt out with teams not reclaiming the bonuses.

There is a specific provision about bonuses paid.  It allows the team to decide whether to take the player to arbitration to try to recover paid bonuses if the player doesn't play that season.

We are also allowed to NOT toll the year if Eriksson decided not to play, that is again a team decision.

It would be pretty difficult to allow players to opt out in the agreement, and then investigate whenever a player decided to opt out.  To find the Canucks were circumventing the cap, they would have to have a 3rd party arbitrator agree that Loui actually wanted to play but made a deal with the team not to.  That is a pretty shaky case.  Going after the Canucks would look to be punitive, especially since the CBA language specifically would allow for it to happen.

He can't keep the bonus.  The transition rules say that players opting out without a medical reason have to return their bonus payment as well as all salary already paid.

thats Jacye Hawryluk's route to being the team.

If Jake shows up "fit" Jake and not like he has been lately then its going to be a nice battle for the bottom 6 and Hawryluk is going to show far more sand than Loui, and we're going to need that to survive the Canadian division.

There's a budget. You don't become rich by artificially creating $5,000,000 positions in your organization.

I'm willing to bet Roberto's hips are worse than most people realize. If he could still play he would.

That falls under the CBA’s cap circumvention and could lead to cap penalties and the loss of draft picks.  The position cannot pay more than market salary.

So how did Florida get away with it?  Hiring Lu as special adviser to general manager.  That position probably has about as much power over decisions as Dwight had as assistant to the regional manager in the Dunder Mifflin Paper branch.

Stretch it out to a 5 year contract to make it more market salary friendly.   I could see Eriksson being useful as an assistant scout in Sweden. Especially in finding those elite empty net specialists.

Scouts don’t earn that kind of salary - the penalties for trying to circumvent the cap are severe.   Luongo earns market rate for an entry level position. Benning talked to the league to make sure.
