Coconuts 12,261 Posted December 29, 2020 About what you'd probably expect, it's not as if he had a huge amount of leverage after one full NHL season. He had a respectable rookie season, but he didn't blow people away.
BCNeil 1,207 Posted December 29, 2020 The Oilers have been making good moves lately.
N7Nucks 8,816 Posted December 29, 2020 Solid rookie season, nothing worth breaking bank for. Also doesn't make sense for Bear to seek long term deal. If he keeps developing could make more after a 2 year bridge. I doubt he had nearly enough leverage for a long term deal though, even if he wanted to play it safe and ask for one. Lets hope this is how Holland will do business going forward. Don't need Helm, Abdelkader, Nielsen type deals.

This is where the line break showed up on my screen and I had a good chuckle 1 1
guntrix 1,519 Posted December 29, 2020 Dude has slightly benefited from the Oilers hype machine. Guy was decent but not worth breaking the bank for, as others have suggested.

KirkSave 295 Posted December 29, 2020 I wish Pistol Pete was still handing out deals in the city of chumps. I had gotten used to oilers issuing deals that would handcuff themselves and this just doesn't jive with that.
Gawdzukes 1,287 Posted December 29, 2020 So was he currently unsigned then? If so, I wonder why no one mentioned it in the prediction thread.

Bitter Melon 3,364 Posted December 29, 2020 He looks like he'll be a solid NHLer but most of the hype about him comes from the fact that he's one of the few rays of light on an otherwise bad Oilers D. I think this is a pretty fair bridge deal.

Yeah, just seems like a fair deal for both sides imo. Bear doesn't have the resume to ask for more, nor did his season warrant a much bigger number. Maybe 3m tops? Is 20ish points good for a rookie D? Absolutely. Is one season of 20 points worth term and a larger number? Probably not, but that depends on the GM. I think what skews it to look like a better deal than it is is the fact people aren't used to seeing what resembles a competent move from an Oilers GM. And a young player establishing himself on the Oilers that wasn’t drafted in the top 5.
