Popular Post Rush17
THE NEW JERSEY DEVILS 2020 DRAFTEES I figured it would be fun to review our 2020 Draftees before the season concludes. NJ is heading into the 2021 Entry draft with just two draft selections that being our's and WSH's first round pick. We hope to add a few more via trade during the draft weekend - but we shall see what all transpires! Below is our 2020 Draftees. Some are players we drafted, some are players we acquired via trade. We are very honoured to have been able to draft these talented young players. We look forward to a very fun off-season and want to wish Seattle GM @theminister well in his expansion draft experience! So without further ado. Yaroslav Askarov selected 11th Overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. Askarov was taken 8th OA by the NJ Devils this past draft. We really went out of our way to try and acquire first round draft selection. Unfortunately the previous GM who departed had moved the team's 1st round selection that eventually ended up being 7th OA. Chicago traded down using that pick to select Marco Rossi 9th OA in the draft. Askarov has gone on to have a very productive in 2020-21 campaign over in Russia where he sported a 0.951 SV% in the KHL with a 5-4-1 record on the stacked SKA St. Petersburg. Askarov also attended the 2021 WJC where he had an okay tournament sporting a 0.916 SV% going 3-3-0. In the playoffs SKA opted to send Askarov down to their MHL affiliate where he went 3-3-1 with a 0.927 SV%. SKA clearly sees the value in pacing the young tender which should help his development! Kaiden Guhle selected 16th Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft Kaiden was selected 19th OA in the CDCFL entry draft by the NJ Devils. He is a large rangey defenseman with exceptional skating and a knack for the physical game. We were thrilled to draft Guhle at 19th OA and have been thoroughly impressed with his on ice leadership and commitment to the game. Due the WHL starting so late Kaiden got in some AHL game action to start off the AHL season where he played in 3 games to get a taste for professional hockey. Kaiden was later returned to his WHL club the Prince Albert Raiders where he was later named team Captain for the western hockey league franchise. Kaiden had 2 points in 2 games prior to an injury has largely derailed his season. Ridly Greig selected 28th Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Ridley Greig was selected 38th Overall by the NJ Devils in the CDCFL Entry Draft. Grieg is a unique forward that has a blend of skill, size, and strong agitating ability. We noticed RIdly was having a strong second half to 2019-20 campaign before the WHL was shut down. We see a lot of Mark Scheifele in his game - which we know is an unfair comparison but perhaps a Scheifele lite type player is more modest. Ridly returned to the WHL this season and has produced at a 1.5 PPG pace recording 30 points so far in 20 games played. Greig was invited to Team Canada's WJC's camp but unfortunately a bout with covid sidelined the young forward from the tournament. Ozzy Wiesblatt selected 31st Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Ozzy Wiesblatt was selected 39th Overall by the NJ Devils in the 2020 CDCFL Entry Draft. Ozzy was a player who stood out to us early in our scouting reports. He reminded us of a young Brad Marchand with his skating and overall offensive game. Obviously not all players will live up to their NHL comparisons but he is someone we were quite fond of. He may not have the same agitation game of a Marchand but the way he skates around the ice and engages in plays reminds us of him quite a bit. Ozzy was promoted to alternate captain this season - he has 26 points in 22 games so far this season with the Prince George Raiders. Roby Jarventie was selected 33rd Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Roby Jarventie was selected 51th Overall by the Washington Capitals. The NJ Devils acquired Roby in a trade earlier this season with fellow 2020 class draftee Arvid Costmar. Roby has 14 goals and 11 assists for 25 points in top Finish league the Lilga. Jarventie attended the 2021 WJC's but didn't stand out with 0 points in 5 WJC games. Roby has a unique skill set though that makes him highly desirable as a prospect. He a player with immense talents and someone we believe will have a bigger role at next years WJC's for team Finland. Will Cuylle was selected 60th Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Will Cuylle was selected 72nd Overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2020 CDCFL Draft. We acquired Cuylle earlier this season in a trade with the Panthers. Cuylle is a deceptive scorer who has started out his 2021 campaign in the American Hockey League where he started out with 5 points in his first 8 games. He has since gone pointless in his last 7 AHL contests. Will has a solid frame at 6'2 and 201 points. We believe Will has the potential to be a talented top 9 forward with some upward trajectory scoring potential. Of course any player at this stage of the draft is an uncertainty but we like his trajectory and are confident in our system's ability to develop him. Artur Akhtyamov was selected 106th Overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Artur Akhtyamov was selected 127th Overall by the NJ Devils in the 2020 CDCFL Entry Draft. Artur as a goalie we set our eyes on early in the goalie scouting process. He has a productive 2021 campaign with the Bars Kazan of the VHL posting a 0.927 SV% in 14 games played where he went 5-4-0. Artur is an athletic goalie with good position and solid goaltending instincts. He is certainly a work in progress but having quality netminders in the system is never a bad thing. Artur represented Team Russia at the 2021 WJC's as well were he played 1 game where he had a 0.947 SV% well backing up NJ top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov. Akhyamov is a great kid and someone we believe one day could be a good NHLer. Jacob Dion was not selected in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Jacob Dion was selected 122nd Overall in the CDCFL Entry Draft by the NJ Devils. We wanted to look for high upside guys in the late rounds in last years draft. Jacob was a guy we identified later on in the scouting process as a new player to the QMJHL. He had previously spent the last 3 seasons in the QMAAA with the Magog Cantonniers where he was named team captain in his final year with the club. We like his aggressive offensive willingness to try to generate offence with his fast and undersized frame. Obviously undersized D have a difficult time making the NHL. He reminded us some in style of a more offensively wreckless Jared Spurgeon. We hope that in time his game will round out with more CHL experience. Dion unfortunately has had an underwhelming second season in the QMJHL recording only 24 points in 34 games. We will continue to support Jacob and remain hopeful he can find his way to the NHL. Popular Post Nail
The 2020-21 version of the CDCFL Questionnaire is now live! Teams may view the questionnaire at this link: https://forms.gle/mpDupyGaoURKQ9hR6 One submission per team, and please let me know if you need any clarifications regarding the questions! As I will be able to see who has submitted, I will keep this open for a bit and eventually begin to start hounding down the GMs that have not yet completed. 2 1
