Well this is embarrassing... wasn't he just doing pushups with stacks of money a few years ago. At this point he should just take lessons from Trump. How to complete fail your finances and still live off like a billionarie. Like sue the casinos for predatory lending or something like that, take it to the surpreme court!

Buffet sold chewing gum, Coca-Cola door to door. He had a paper route. He worked at his grandfather’s store and was paid the same wage as anybody else who worked there. He did it himself. Certainly his father was a congressman, but even then, his father made him go to college rather than going into business right after graduating from high school. The two aren’t even remotely close.

At least research first. It’s a handy method of acquiring information rather that just BSing your way through the argument.

Don't waste your time arguing with him. Simply put, Donald Trump is an idiot's idea of what a successful businessman looks like.

All I know, is that if I'd been given that amount of money in my late teens and early twenties, I probably would have made the same dumb moves.  I'm in my late 40's now.  I have a modest income but I manage my money well... This as a result of learning from my mistakes.  My parents were both poor role models in relation to finances.  Also, I was way to cocky and arrogant to listen to sound advice.  The key is, having the right roll models.

Exactly, I think when you are young and have too much money too soon its really hard to have self control. I think most of us splurged when we had our first few paychecks but decided to start saving as time went by. Unfortunately for, young athletes, there's just a feeling the money will keep coming in until the spending spirals under control. I think some or even most of us would have done the same.

How the hell does anyone plough through $69m in ten years? I just cannot fathom how someone can do that.

Want to know what's more puzzling? He played 4 seasons in Winnipeg. You can only go to the Human Rights Museum so many times before there's nothing else left to do, there.

still hilarious that average nba players make 15 million plus

Good for the NBA players. The players and the league bring in a lot, based on a combination of their TV deal and sponsorships. It also helps when your halftime correspondants include personalities like Shaq and Barkley.

Doesn't help that the NHL has Ron Maclean and Kelly Hrudey.

Probably dropped a fortune trying to upgrade his wifi just to sit at home and play video games, if those player polls are to be believed.

I lived in Winnipeg for a year - maybe he spent it all at one of the Pony Corrals? Pier 7 was my fav place to spend my hard earned cash on food and drink.

For all those piling on, think about the fact that these guys have little life training (financial or otherwise) and that money where SOMEWHERE and you bet your assets that his agents, "friends", "girlfriends" and many others made more than their fair share just hanging around this guy.    See how many are there now to support him and get him back on his feet.

As odd as it sounds, the kids that either go the college route or simply have more modest careers are the ones that usually are more financially set than many of those who spend the big bucks.   Further, at least in years of old, there was zero training offered by NHL teams in this area.   In Europe lots.   Hopefully the NHLPA sees this as something they need to address and educate these kids out of the gate and even work with a major investment firm or two and start a program for them with some payroll savings plans.

I feel nothing but sadness for this guy.   Sure he was portraying something he wasn't but he likely never had a clue how much anything really cost as it was all fantasy to him.   It becomes that when you essentially go from high school to million dollar plus contracts and no idea what it is like to budget, scrape by etc. etc.

So happy you are back on these boards. You add a lot and I, for one, appreciate your contributions and life experience.

Pier 7 was terrific. Not sure when it closed, though. Must be around 20-25 years, now.

Cheers, always enjoyed your insights as well.   This should be a very unique season as though hockey is fun and the Canucks are as much a wild card (I don't mean in terms of playoff connotation but simply I think they could finish 5th or 1st in the Canadian and look convincing both ways), this season will be about bigger things than hockey and I hope everyone in CDC world (even the trolls) stay safe and that their circle of friends and family do too.   :)

The only thing I find annoying about NBA is the political overtones that comes with it.   All that money doesn't make you smarter and more stupid things, and quite hypocritical too boot, come out of your average NBA player than any 10 NHL players.    Their use of hyperbole and masquerading as offended social justice warriors whilst AVERAGING most families lifetime earnings in a few months.    Using their very influential platforms for balance and rejection of "gansta" lifestyles etc. would provide back to society more than just the entertainment of watching tall dudes in shorts playing ball.   NFL has some beauties too in that regard (actual criminals) but their career spans and paydays are not as impressive...on average.

However, at the core, I could not agree more that if the players don't get the money then the owners will and there should be a fair split.   IF fans find the money too extreme, stop paying the prices they do for tickets and (more importantly) merch and turn the TV to something else during live broadcasts.   While the revenue stream keeps rising, so will the salaries.

lol. Remember when he spent thousands of dollars on a billboard to win back an ex-girlfriend?

May be the only really sound thing he ever did that was actually just for him.   While creepy, it is better than blowing it on wild parties and such.

I just don't pay attention to athletes/entertainers once I'm done watching the sport/movie/show. They have their passions and interests, and they don't align with mine.

Agreed, for the most part. Although, not that the revenue should be a "fair split." While there would be no league without players, owners assume more risk, that's historical in every business. But otherwise, like you said, if fans find the money too extreme, then stop paying the prices. I have. And I can honestly say I haven't watched more than 5 minutes of an NHL hockey game now in well over a year. And with Bettman's recent announcement, if it wasn't painfully apparent how dire the NHL future was (which anyone with passing knowledge of finances knew before his announcement), it's become painfully clear to everyone just how bad things are for the future of the NHL.

To me, that was the equivalent of a grade 12 student going in front of the student body and professing his love for the popular girl in school, only to have someone pants him in the middle of it.

The billboard thing combined with everything else just makes it look like Kane might have some genuine mental health issues.

Sometimes, people are just irresponsible and don't rely on not decades, but centuries of knowledge to aid us in making better, more sound decisions, financially.

Not saying he has or does not have mental health issues, but people make poor decisions and are of sound mind. He's just made the same poor decisions as many, many other professional athletes.

Yes, but a constant stream of reported altercations, incidents, coupled with behaviour that is simultaneously erratic and showboaty and also clingy and needy to me indicates more than just poor decision making.
