Why do some canucks fans think that having a certain 3rd/4th line plug in the lineup will make a difference?

The player I have in mind is Zack MacEwen. Ever since the playoffs and during the playoffs people would always rave about "we need someone with size in the lineup" or "I hope MacEwen plays tomorrow"

 

In my honest opinion, I don't think it has ever made a difference if we had Bailey or MacEwen in our lineups, they are all 4th line plugs that barely do anything. I just don't understand all the hype behind it. Maybe someone like Ferland would make a actual difference if he played 1st or 2nd line since he actually has produced points in his lifetime. 

 

Now, I am not saying we shouldn't be excited like for example I completely understand if a top 6 player or top 4 d is coming back from injury as in Miller or Toffoli cuz that will actually make a huge difference.

I’d get pretty excited about any Canuck showing some aggression. I’m tired of all the cheek turning.

That's true, though for instance if in the playoffs there was a Justin Williams or Joel Ward available, or alternatively a Max Talbot or Darren Helm in their prime who was able to push play while being solid defensively, then it would be great to have them back (same for members of legit shutdown lines, e.g. Ducks back then with Moen/ Pahlsson/ R. Niedermayer).

The closest I could think of who could fit that role may be either Gaudette if he keeps developing, or Tyler Motte if he finds his playoff scoring spark again.  Til then I'd agree, it's pretty irrelevant who plays, since even face-off "specialists" like Sutter or Beagle are lacking in other areas of their game.

I think the reason people look forward to a player like MacEwen being in the lineup is due to his size and penchant for physical play. The Canucks have had a tendency in the last decade or so to not push back when another team is physical with them, and it's hard for a fan to watch. 

 

It seems as though this season is no different with Vancouver being outhit by both Edmonton and Calgary in the 2nd and 3rd game of the season. The Edmonton game was especially concerning for two reasons:

1. Vancouver was trailing the entire game, therefore should have used physical play to try to stifle Edmonton's attack and turn the tide. 
2. Edmonton is probably the least intimidating of the Canadian teams roster wise. Outside of Kassian and Kharia, the players on the Oilers team are not the type to really intimidate the average NHL player, yet somehow Edmonton outhit the Canucks 32-17. Not good. 

How will Vancouver handle Montreal, with Weber, Edmunson, Chiarot, Anderson, Gallagher, and the like? What about Ottawa with Gudbranson, White, Watson, Tierney, and Haley? Toronto has Simmonds, Thornton, Muzzin, and Bogosian. All these players mentioned will probably be chomping at the bit to get a piece of a team that is routinely getting outmuscled. Whatever it takes to win.

The Canucks also have Roussel, Myers, Hamonic, Edler, Schmidt, Beagle and others who are more than capable of playing a physical game, not just from a hitting perspective. However, these players are seemingly playing timid right now. In a condensed season, that's going to lose you games if the other team manages to dictate the pace.

why? because most fans are hoping for another Bertuzzi type player  , big ,can hit, chip in a few goals , lol 3rd and 4th line plugs are what you need to win in the playoffs  oilers are the prime example , 2 of the best point producers and yet fail to make the playoffs  why? no 3rd or 4th line  plugs

in my honest opinion, i don't think one player especially a plug like macewan will make a difference. he plays what 7 mins a night usually?

if canucks fans want harder hitter and tougher players to play against then they're going to have to wait for ferland and or podkolzin. you need tough players in your top 6, that actually play the majority of the game. not some plug who comes on for a few minutes. example: bertuzzi, lucic(in his prime), ferland (2015 playoff version), etc etc

 

 

 

and NO this does not mean the solution is to inject bailey and or macewan in the top 6.

Tenacity in their forechecks is what I would like to see on the 3rd and 4th lines. A speedier and gritter 3rd and 4th line. Players who are strong on the forecheck, turn pucks over and make the opposing team player work for every inch of ice. E.g. more Tyler Motte kind of players in the 3rd and 4th line. Right now, our 3rd and 4th line doesn't score enough goals, and they are also not very fast. All they do is get the puck to the middle and dump it in.

I think in general the quality of the players on the third and fourth lines can sometimes be the difference in the teams success, specially during the playoffs. If we assume for the moment each teams first couple of lines equal each other out then the last two lines can really be the difference maker. So the better "plugs" you play makes for a greater chance

to succeed.

Honestly he got clocked early in a fight as a rookie by Farham and has seemed to be less physical ever since

There’s also that hit on Roman Polak (I think it was that guy) that got him a suspension a few seasons back.
