Maybe we can start reminding ourselves that a 1st round pick doesn't always pan out as planned. We can whine all we want about Virtanen being an apparent bad pick, but EVERY team has had a bad pick of some sort. Boston, for crying out loud, had three first round picks, and they didn't become a powerhouse team like everyone thought they would be.

If teams knew their player would turn out bad, why would they pick them? It just comes to show you that the pick selection isn't as clear cut as one might think it is. As for the people who whined about the J.T. Miller trade, where are you now?

For sure, every team has misses and players don't always hit their projections. Hoping players reach their potential is one thing, expecting them to is something else entirely.

At least Jake's played almost 300 NHL games and shown that at the very least he could probably be a capable third liner. Some first round guys never even reach that. We might get that or more out of Juolevi as well, time will tell. Better to get a journeyman player than draft a bust.

This is so true. right from the Bantam drafts held by the CHL Major Junior leagues. The WHL rosters typically consist of 25%  of their players that were never selected in the Bantam draft. Well known NHL players like Jamie Benn, Duncan Keith and Shea Weber were all passed by when the WHL held their Bantam draft.

But but we had draft guru Judd Bracket nailing 100% of his picks when Benning didn't interfere and override him to purposely make failed picks. Trading 1st rounders then was like giving away surefire elite superstars!

Not to mention certain players might be developed differently, so it might have been a good pick, but just not developed correctly, whereas another player who was drafted later might have been a worse player that developed better in the system.

I agree that initially the issues with Virtanen were based on his draft rank, however now I think most, including myself are just fed up seeing the same thing 5 years in a row. I could care less about where he was drafted. Now my issues are that Virtanen is inconsistent, a floater, soft, a defensive liability, attracts negative off ice attention, doesn't kill penalties, doesn't drive the net...Yes he does some good things, but nothing consistently enough for the coach or fans to rely on.. I'm over that.

Many a times, a trade fixes those things.

I still think Virtanen can turn it around.

Should’ve kept Toffoli.

I wish I had your optimism for Virty, I really do but I think the signs are clear that JB will give a big 6x6 contract for him to float.
