The defensive structure implemented so far this season has shown to not work, yet continues the same plan. Yes execution lies a lot on the 6 dman and 12 forwards to execute, but they clearly cannot execute the plan given. Change it up, tighten it up, stop asking your dman to pinch so aggressively and start working on a style that goes back to fundamentals of reading the play.

 

 

We could go back to collapsing in front of the goalie for the whole 60 minutes like against Vegas in the playoffs.

 

Yes, Baumgartner isn't some defensive mastermind, and yes it would be great to get an upgrade on coaching staff but at least for this game, we just don't have quality defenceman. 

 

Even Chatfield got injured and he was playing really well.

I've never been on board with letting JB go because I think he's done a great job.

 

But this off-season letting Markstron, Tanev, Toffoli, Stecher, Leivo all walk for nothing.   Those are some key pieces...  

 

You don't spend 5-7 years developing a goalie to let him walk to a rival at the beginning of his prime.

He made it seem like Benning went to ownership with a plan (including buyout, walking away from RFA's) to try to hold onto Marky/Toff/exc but got nixed in these Covid times.

 

 

Other teams throw in some draft picks to get rid of albatross contracts. Benning: we are not in this business. Would have been great from Jim to clear cap space enough to re-sign Toffoli.
