Jordie Benn vs. Hamonic

I feel that Benn's play so far has justified him to be in the lineup versus Hamonic. Plus we should definitely have either Chatfield or Juolevi rotating on that last pairing. So this means Hamonic could be the odd man out for now because his play so far has not been great and Flames fans warned us about him not being the same as the NYI Hamonic.

Benn looked decent vs. Ottawa.  Ottawa folks.

This upcoming road-trip will be challenging.  Not only for individual players earning regular roles, but for the team overall to establish some consistent play.

still Benn has shown to have better coverage in the D zone vs. Hamonic who kept going for hits, leaving other players wide open for clear breakaways. Benn also seems to stay back more often when Hughes attacks kind of like how Tanev played with Hughes. We will see how Benn does against real NHL teams but so far he is on the plus side and has played much better than Hamonic.

Hamonic's injured.  Benn is his fill-in.  Jordie's played well, I'll give him that, but I don't think that means he's taking Travis' spot for good.

True but if he plays decent against Jets, Habs and Leafs, then he could very well take Hamonics spot. Am still not comfortable seeing Hamonic paired with Hughes.

Lets try and remember that he opted out of the bubble play off series back in the summer and had next to no training camp because he had to quarantine . The defence as a whole was not ready for season opener because of no preseason games and 50% of their D were new and a rookie or two just to make it even more difficult. I think its too early to count Hamonic out. We'll need his experience come play off time I am sure and he's only on a 1 yr deal

Not saying that Hamonic will not improve his play, but I think more practice time with the team is needed before he can play. He didnt even have time to practice with the team much so the time off to practice will be good for him. Although I agree he will be valuable for playoffs and he is a good PKer that blocks lots of shots. He definitely gives our D more depth.

Hughes seems to have worked well with Benn so far but I think Hamonic is better then what we saw given the long layoff and no camp.

I'm not a fan of Chatfield he doesn't seem to have much offensive potential and that penalty was a really dumb decision. I prefer OJ but think him Benn and hammer rotating keeping everyone fresh makes sense.

If Hamonic improves his play, I have no problem with him playing. I know he can be better than what he has shown.

Like Fantenburg did to Benn last year, Benn can do to Hamonic this year.

But it's an ongoing competition - you have to continue to earn your minutes.

Also - not sure about your source - but listening to "Flames fans" might not always lead you to the best decisions.  How about they leave it to on ice performance here?

Thus far, Benn would have the clear edge imo.

Hamonic is the superior player.... but Benn is the "safer" player.

Hamonic is required to be a 2-way defenseman.... Benn just needs to make the smart play and be defensively reliable.

Benn does have the advantage of playing with the team last season, thus there's a bit more understanding and chemistry.  Hamonic came in late and didn't have the luxury of a full training camp and preseason.

Hamonic is a better D than Benn, has more range. Hamonic has had a rough start, likely due to the fact that he didn't play for a year. He needs to be given a chance to work through the rust and get his game back to where it should be, but that should probably be done, when he comes back from Injury, in restricted minutes for the first few games. Let him have some time to get his timing back up to speed.

Benn is a good fill in, and adds a nice physical presence, but he's not that versatile.

When it comes to pairing  with Hughes it seems what works best is a stay at home defenceman who’s job is to cover for him . Tanev and Schenn were both good partners, and now Benn.

Just like “ Hold my Beer while I go do stuff “ is all that’s required.

Guys like Myers and Hamonic like to jump up into the play and next thing you know, it’s a breakaway and both D are trapped.
