What do we really need (Proposal)

Recommended Posts

Well, this is a continuation of evaluation of Jake and Adam

So, although both have some upside and some value, the question is how much?

At the same time, what do we need for forwards moving forward..............

It is my belief, that Benning now has to start looking at his 3rd and 4th lines and see what he has.

The following 2 trades, I think are realistic, and fair value, and fill in some holes moving forward

I think, it would be a easy leap to suggest that the top 2 lines will be complete, once Podkolzin gets here

Miller/Pettersson/Boeser and Hoglander/Horvat/Podkolzin is the penciled in top lines, in the not to distant future

I think 2 trades I would like to see are

Trade #1......................Adam Gaudette for Nick Paul

Trade #2......................Jake Virtanen for Lawson Crouse

This would give us the potential to throw out a 3rd line of .........................Crouse (6'4" 220 lbs) / Paul (6'3" 219 lbs) / McEwen (6'3" 205 lbs) in a size matters 3rd line

Now, Motte deserves  better, but certainly a potential Motte/Lind/Lockwood 4th line would be an energy line, and would keep the cap down

I would be moving Pearson at the TDL along with Benn

Now Lockwood and Lind are not there yet, but it is looking more and more like Lind will make a case to play up, within the next year or so........................

Don't think we need anyone from the Sens lol ;)

And I think it'd definitely be too early to pull the plug on Gaudette

There are lots of players on the sens worth having, they are just mis-cast and not enough support

But if you look at Paul's face Off percentage, and I can certainly see how he fits, he also is a great skater for his size

As for Crouse, he and Virtanen share very similar story lines, albeit, Crouse has not shown as much, but it is not like Virtanen has shown well recently

IMO, the current 3rd line is lacking, and Gaudette shows absolutely no defensive acumen, he really needs to step it up on the faceoffs, because once Beagle and Sutter are gone, weeze in trouble! Take a look at Paul's Faceoff win/loss record, it is what you need for a center.

I hear Sam Bennett 6'1, 24 , 190 lbs  wants a  trade --- I would really be going after Bennett he is very gritty and would be great 3rd line centre..He would add toughness...He can't fight..We don't have many players that, MacEwen 6'3  210 lbs, Myers 6'8 215 lbs, Hamonic 6'2, 210lbs., Benn 6'2--210lbs...Rest of guys can't fight and teams know this....

Virtanen -Cal   ----- Bennett  -Van

I would trade Jake for this deal??? Both players need a new team,,,

Upgrades to the bottom 6

VAN may have to add Jake to trade Roussel, for example.

Benning tried desperately to move money this off-season to keep Toffoli.   Roussel, Virtanen and co are back because he couldn’t.

5.5M for Roussel/Virtanen vs having an impact player.  With a flat cap and players having to take less it feels like it will be close to impossible to move inefficient contracts without a significant add in picks or blue chip prospects.

I don’t mind your Gaudette and Virtanen ideas (although I’d still prefer Sam Bennett given that he’d a pretty good long term Brandon Sutter replacement), but I would NOT move Pearson and Benn at the trade deadline if the Canucks look like they can realistically make the playoffs or are playoff bound.

Yes, picks are nice, but not at the expense of “selling out the boys” by sending them mixed messages (ie you guys are well within the playoff race but we don’t believe in you and so we will move a couple of players for picks).

Let Pearson and Benn walk at the end of the season if we are competing for a playoff spot.

My team for next year:

Miller-Pettersson-Boeser

Podkolzin-Horvat-Hoglander

Roussel-Bennett-MacEwen

Motte-Beagle-[Bailey, Lind, or that dude from Ottawa that we signed).

Hughes-Tryamkin

Schmidt-Myers

Juolevi-Chatfield

Demko

Holtby

We need a young 3rd line centre who can win faceoffs and kill penalties.  And we need young stay at home defenceman for Quinn.  Those are our two biggest needs right now.  Benning has managed to fill pretty much every other spot via draft/trade.

Yes, I agree, which is why I suggested Nick Paul

Well there is Virtanen and Gaudette proposals jumping out all over the place

Which is why I made these proposals

Nick Paul is a fast skating power forward, who plays LW and Center, has a great F/O percentage

Lawson Crouse is stuck in Arizona and has not arrived yet, but has the same basic potential as Jake was said to have. He is a hard working LW

Well, with all these proposals, i have the feeling the masses are feeling Virtanen and Gaudette do not fit in the LT plans

I would agree, and feel that it is better to move them now, while they have value

Again.......Nick Paul and Lawson Crouse

What we really need medium to long term, in no particular order:

1.One more impact top six player.   That includes Hoglander working out.   It's possible Podz can be that guy, but expecting that out of the gate isn't realistic...also says a ton about Hogs so far as a 40th overall ... just wow.  Home run so far.

2. Edlers long term replacement.   Sorry folks - that won't be OJ...he doesn't play the same game, he's more of a Tanev replacement then anything.  Myers mitigates this but if we lose Myers who's replacing him?

3. A third line C or bottom six C to replace "foundational" player Sutter.  We have nobody in the system to do that.

4.  One more top four all-around D.   If we are going to contend,  we need a deep blue line.

5.   Demko to be the real deal - and a solid back-up for him.

What we have...Podz for sure could fill the top six role.   Lucky us.   Edler - well we will have to re-up him as for sure we don't have that.    Bailey?  And OJ who has shown enough that for sure he can handle number 4.

Trading JV for Sam Bennet makes a ton of sense at the moment.    Don't know if that's wise given interdivisional trades are weighed a lot differently for a variety of reasons, but both are former high picks that have underwhelmed.    I'd do this - not sure Calgary would though.   Number 3 could be handled internally by putting Motte in that role ... he's got the experience ...

The other thing we could do is trade JV for Mete in MTL.   He produced well and spent some time on MTLs top D pairing ... that said i'm not sure - we might be better of targeting Dunn.

What i will say, is once all the cap sheds, there is enough money to buy via free agency two of these items.    Thats about it.   The rest is going to have to occur via a trade or a prospect or a roster player  that can fill that role.

Edit:  If all of these things work out we will for sure have the troops to be a contender.
