It’s not about the tax situation. Montreal has  the highest taxes, then California, and New York. BC is middle of the pack. 

Players like to go where they have a shot at the Cup. Canucks aren’t going to do that with this coaching staff.

We've  said our best players had to step up 14 games ago. There has been enough time for them to do that. Dominate one period, even one shift but nothing so far. You can only give them so much time to do that before the season is lost.

Michael Jordan popularized the quote that says individuals win games but teams win Championships.  

 

Washington were always favourites but never won.  Holtby, Oshie explained that they were expected to win because their roster was so good.  The year they won their roster was not as strong but they felt that they were finally playing and sacrificing for each other.  They had to bond to win games with one of their players saying they became family.  It was no longer just guys playing hockey together.

 

The roster was not perfect last season but they felt they had something special per the quotes of Miller and Horvat on how shocked they were by the off-season.  That play/sacrifice as a team seems to be missing this season.  

 

Toffoli, Tanev, Stecher and even Leivo weren’t particularly impressed with how discussions with them went.  Would think that players have spoken to try and understand why they didn’t come back.  It’s easy to say it’s a business but they thought their group was close to achieve something and now the group is broken up.

 

Toffoli  was only there 10 games but fit so well.  Players sounded excited and must have been eager to have both Boeser and him for a full season.  Benning also drummed that up about how Toffoli was a long term plan. 

 

It doesn’t feel like they are playing as a team and the effect of breaking up the group of key players might have been underestimated.

I guess you haven't followed Tanev's career very closely.  He gets injured every single year.  He's missed half a season twice already.  He was also injured in the last game last year and would have missed the last 13 games if not for the shutdown.  Signing a guy to a 4 year contract at age 31 when that player gets injured every single year and misses 15-20 games on average per year for 7 years in a row is usually not a smart move.

You're underestimating Tanev's importance in the locker room.

He did last season.  Canucks were one of the worse defensive teams last year per advanced tracking - both Sportlogiq and CSA.

That is ultimately what will happen if this management team, including ownership, continues on. This is toxic. Well, a team takes time to gel.

 

Last year's team was a culmination of many years of players building a connection.

 

The heart of the team last year was Markstrom.  He had been building his role as #1 on the team for a couple years.  Every player in the room knew it and they all felt Marky had their backs.

 

One of the two defensive hearts was Tanev.  He was a calming influence on the ice and in the dressing room... the kind of quiet leader everyone on the team respected.

 

And Stecher sweated and bled every game for the team.

 

Rip those guys out without a second thought and it makes everyone on the team think twice.

 

If the best player on the team can be thrown away without a second thought, then where does that leave the rest?

 

If they were replaced with equally skilled players then that can make up for the loss... with time.

 

Don't replace them with equals and you get a dressing room which isn't the same.
