Columbus lost 6-5.  The league got wrong their review of a Carolina goal that was off-side and should have been called back.

Here's a replay for anyone wanting to see:

They acknowledge the error by removing the penalty, but how do they not remove the goal?

Did I hear that right -- these are "veteran officials"? They should no longer be employed.

I imagine they lost any chance of working playoff games. Maybe regular season too.

Seemed like they really rushed it, perhaps to get home in time for the Superbowl? Disappointing to see the lack of due diligence.

Granted, I don't like the offside review altogether, so I'm hoping this can be used as fuel to remove it.

This is what surprised me. They made the decision before the broadcast could even show the correct camera angle. Tyson Baker and Jonny Murray are the two names I've noted down and we will see if they get any playoffs games.

I'll be curious to see if they do. Hopefully one of us remembers to check this thread come playoff time

I agree. Offside reviews are stupid - scrap them altogether.

Officials miss other infractions. If they miss an offside, just chalk it up to the same. 99 times out of 100 it's within inches and wasn't a glaring error that gave a team an advantage.

That's the way I feel about them.

Thanks Duchene for making the NHL overreact and create a rule for this <_<

It’s not on the refs.  Portzline investigated further for The Athletic.

It was actually a video-coordinator in training that over-stepped his job.  Arena officials have to be able to connect with Toronto who do all kind of reviews.  The video-technician is not supposed to get involved.  His job is to make sure there’s the right connection between the arena and Toronto.  That technician spoke up and called it onside and a good goal twice in the headset and officials in Columbus thought it was Toronto.  The put down the headset and made the call.

At that point Toronto knew it was the wrong call and wanted to get the refs back on the headset but not that easy because of Covid protocol.  The headset has to be disinfected after each wear.  The official in the booth was doing that so he could put it back on after after having shared it with the on-ice refs.  So there was no one hearing the league trying to get back the attention of the refs.

If they took away the penalty, why didn't they take away the goal?

They hesitated on what to do.  Calling back the penalty or the goal so late was unprecedented.  It was a Toronto decision and not the on-ice refs.  They decided to scratch the rest of the penalty but it’s not normal procedure but they felt it would be just wrong if Carolina got a 2nd goal out of that mistake.  They spoke to Kekaleinen to tell him they wished they could call back the goal but there’s no precedent for that.

It must be an awkward situation to be in. I don't think I've seen this happen before.
