Tyler Myers and the Expansion Draft:

Although Tyler Myers is a semi-decent #4 dman that gives the Canucks depth in its weakest organizational position (right side D), a strong argument can be made for exposing Myers at the Expansion Draft, and possibly even incentivizing Seattle to take him.  Given Myers’ age, it’s entirely possible that we’ve already gotten the best years out of Myers and that 6 million in freed up cap space could be better served elsewhere.   With the Canucks needing money to sign Petey and Hughes, along with the fact that the aging Edler likely won’t be back, the Canucks could use this opportunity to ditch Myers and go after someone better (Dougie Hamilton?).

Another thing to keep in mind is Loui Eriksson.   Although Eriksson will still have one year left on his deal after this season, he will only be owed two million in real dollars.    The Canucks could use this opportunity to move Eriksson a la “The Marc Staal” deal.

The ultimate point I’m making is this:  If the Canucks are interested in being a highly competitive hockey team for 2021-2022, it might be possible and realistic for them to get rid of both Myers and Eriksson, and using that freed up 12 million to invest in better assets while also having enough money to re-up Petey and Hughes.

On the flip side, as it relates to Myers, there’s no guarantee that the Canucks would be able to replace the departed Myers with a high calibre dman.  We might need Myers after all.   Edler will likely be gone next season and could likely be replaced by Tryamkin.   As much as I love Tryamkin, he’s no Alex Edler and our defense is quite weak as is.

Even with Myers and no Edler in the line-up, our defense could be quite weak:

Schmidt-Myers

Hughes-Tryamkin

Juolevi-???

I don’t even want to imagine what that defense would look like *without* Myers.

Ideally, we could have a long term set up where we would have something such as.....

????-Schmidt

Hughes-Tryamkin

Juolevi-Myers

But my concern is that Myers’ contract beyond this season will really start to become an anchor.    The problem however, is that if the Canucks were to “incentivize” Seattle to take Myers, there’s no guarantee that we’d be able to convince them.

In other words, if the Canucks were to “go big” and sign a guy like Dougie Hamilton on July 1st, there’s no guarantee that we’d be able to move Myers at the expansion draft.......unless I’m missing something?

I believe Myers has to be exposed in order for the Canucks to meet the ED eligibility rules for games played by a defenceman...

Yes that is correct.     What I'm trying to do is outweigh the pros and cons of Myers being selected by Seattle.

Agree that $6m is expensive for a fringe 2nd pairing Dman and we could use that $ elsewhere. But I can't see Seattle selecting Myers assuming he is exposed. Holtby seems the more obvious target. I think it would take a big carrot to incentivize Seattle to take Myers contract.

I have to respectfully disagree.

I think Seattle would be happy to add Myers to their defense, despite his price tag.

He might actually be up there in terms of what's available in exposed defense, and he's signed to a pretty lengthy term which is something that expansion teams probably have to take into consideration.

Yes, a top UFA who signed with the canucks to be closer to his family in Kelowna will willingly waive his M-NTC to goto an expansion team.

I was under the impression that Myers could be exposed AND claimed in this ED.   Unless I’m wrong?

No, you're right. I think you only have to protect players with NMC.

Anyway I'm certain that Myers can be exposed. It was discussed at length at the time of the signing and was a major part in the negotiated deal, i.e. Myers got term and money in exchange for giving the team flexibility in the ED.

Which given the players the Canucks "must" expose at the ED, he's going to be near or at the top of the list in terms of quality available.

They could always take Loui I guess.

It's gonna be Myers or Holtby almost definitely. A closer look into which G/D will likely be available at the ED could probably almost tell you now who will be taken

Canucks might need Holtby more than Myers given that Dipietro might need another year in the minors (along with Demko possibly needing one more year to really solidly himself as a top #1).

Wheres Hamonic?  Hes rusty not having played in a year, but an in-game shape Hamonic is exactly what this teams needs.   Would love to see us get Tryamkin back and work Woo into the lineup next year.

It comes down to who the other teams expose, and what Holtby looks like "towards the end of the year". If there are better goalies around they might opt for the D-man on a secure contract.

They gotta take somebody, and the list of names is gonna be pretty weak from the Canucks aside from EmptyNetSpecialist Loui Eriksson, The Giraffe, and The (Washington) Save. The rest are 'potentially' Probably/basically Roussel, Beagle, "Ferland" possibly (depending on Injury condition), Motte perhaps, and Luongo's retirement cap hit.

No clue how this works eh, we just went thru this with Vegas. NMC is only protection from expansion draft.

Myers 110% should be exposed, doubtful he gets claimed and if he does we have 6m more to go and look for a better D in that price range via trade or FA. Or we can use that $ to do something in the F group as well.
