J.I.A.H.N
Ok, this is somewhat of a stretch (I know!), but thought it could be pulled off...............maybe????? I am of the mind that, we have no replacement for Alex Edler, nor should it be a priority for next year, in fact, he probably has a couple of decent years left, albeit with a lesser role. So here is the proposal............Aqualini approaches Edler, and says "If you agree to wave your NMC at the TDL, we will re-sign you, to a series of 1 year contracts, at ?, if you agree to retire when, you can't play anymore, and have your minutes taken by another player. Further more Alex, we will find you a position in the Canucks Org, once you do retire. (maybe PR, maybe player development, maybe scouting, etc....) Now this deal would be with Aqualini, so that a new GM could not just circumvent the agreement. IMO, Alex Edler at the TDL at 50% is worth a very good draft pick.......either a 1st or a 2nd and 3rd....so IMO, there is a huge benefit for the Canucks to do this. It would also not be a 35 years of age contract, so the Canucks would not have to carry it forward. Edler has said he will not wave, but given a hand shake agreement with Aqualini, he might go for it, if it cemented his future with the Canucks. Alex is very loyal. I would guess, if a contract extension was discussed, before his contract was actually over, then they would be fully within their rights to discuss it. He would not be the first player to ever re-sign with the club that traded them. Edited February 11, 2021 by janisahockeynut

goalie13
If I am reading this right, you are proposing to trade Edler but have an agreement to re-sign him when he hits free agency? I believe this would be considered tampering. You cannot have an agreement with a player who is under contract to a different team. I'm not saying this kind of thing never happens, just saying that it would likely be against the rules and there are risks that go with that. 1

No....Yes What I am saying is negotiate, in general.........for say 1 year then after a general agreement is in place then present him with the bigger picture with a wink wink, nod, nod This can be done one on one with Aqualini, so he knows it is legit
Coconuts
Edler isn't going anywhere, if anything he'll be back next season on a cheaper 1-2 year deal. Maybe he'll retire, but I see him wanting to hit 1k games and I really want to see him do it as a Canuck. This attitude is why we have had so many players retire here with out receiving any asset back................and you wonder why we don't have a Stanley Cup Well, at least one of the reasons The Canucks have to start running this as a business Edited February 11, 2021 by janisahockeynut 1 1

Let's have him retire as a Canuck before going to the ROH.

If Edler reaches a thousand games as a Canuck he'll be just the fourth player to do so, and first D. Only the Henrik, Daniel, and Trevor have ever reached that mark. Yes, it's a business, but there's something to be said for the loyalty of players who have wished nothing more than to stick it out with a team through it's highs and lows. canuktravella
he will waive if asked then let habs oilers leafs fight for him at deadline best pick highest bidder take all and he gets a cup run. Can do a gentleman handshake if he wants to resign here next yr we can draft maybe luke hughes if we get lucky hes 2 yrs away barely qualifies for this yrs draft. Kid is 6’2 176 pounds turns 18 in mid sept soo give him 2 yrs 8 months til hes 19 kid might be 6’4 220 by then lotsa time to develop by the time es ready edler will be retiring. We could draft a decent 3rd line center or winger with pick aquired for edler and pearson can be traded as well maximize our return on prospects. Its a business we seem to let our assets stay to long before we get a return after 2012 kesler sedins burrows bieska edler hansen should have been sent out for youth we would be a much better team for it at the moment 1
hammertime
One thing that has me genuinely concerned is if we are this bad now with Pete and Hughes on ELC's how bad will the Canucks be with them on new contracts. Canucks 2021 Hog Pete Boeser Motte Bo Pod Loui Miller MaK Rous Beagle Lind Myers Hughes Edler Schmidt Woo? Juolevi This lineup is flaming hot garbage and we would still be up against the cap. Remove Edler from it and I think it may qualify for the worst squad the Canucks have ever iced.

I don't see it like that at all Hammer What I want to see is this.............and I am not calling it tanking, as I see this as a down year for us...........Thankfully! Canucks 1st...........................5th OA........just saying Canucks 1st Edler.................24th OA......just a guess (via trade at TDL) Canucks 2nd.........................37th OA......as above Canucks 2nd Pearson...........58th OA......just guessing (Via trade at TDL) Canucks 3rd..........................69th OA Miller................Pettersson............Boeser Hoglander...........Horvat................Podkolzin UFA.....................Paul.................Gaudette Roussel...............Beagle................McEwen..............Motte Hughes...........Schmidt Edler...............Tryamkin Juolevi.............Chatfield Rathbone......... Demko....Holtby I see Myers being picked at the expansion draft and I see Schmidt being put with Hughes. I also think this year is a throw away in terms of how the Canucks management see it. I also believe Aqualini would just as soon see the Canucks not make the playoffs and keep costs down. I can also see Eriksson retire next year, after his bonus is paid. I also see next year as the make or break year for both Benning and Green, which IMO, will turn out better than expected.............. Now a couple of things............... 1. Everyone knows we have no 3rd line center at this point, so I see Benning using Virtanen to get one......maybe no Paul, but someone or a UFA 2. Motte could easily be on the 3rd line as a winger or a center 3. Lind may surprise people and force himself on Now the drafting and trades for are all pie in the sky, but it "could" happen or a portion there of. But the point is there are possibilities, and I am hopeful Edited February 11, 2021 by janisahockeynut

Use some of the assets we get from our UFAs Pearson/Benn/Sutter and Hamonic/Edler(if they want) in order to move Eriksson before the expansion draft. Having cap would open up a lot of things. We could find another Schmidt situation, take advantage of teams with a good player they can't protect and/or sign a good FA.

But the point is there are possibilities, and I am hopeful I think Tryamkin is very wishful thinking I hope you are right. I think trading Edler and then re signing him is also incredibly wishful. It has happened however it is incredibly rare and we both know any time the league has an opportunity to punish the Canucks they throw the book if there is any whiff of tampering you can bet we will be losing a 1st round pick. Loui shows no signs of doing us any favors. Would be nice for sure. Myers I mean sure maybe seattle takes him I don't see any reason to expose him other than shedding cap. if Seattle did take him and Tryamkin decides to stay in russia until he's UFA that would be Canuck luck. Buuuut Lets say all this did work out. All the stars aligned and everything came up roses. On paper we are still worse off than we currently are. Soo like it or not the rebuild is ongoing. All I am saying is if we are currently this bad brace yourself because we are going to get worse before we get better. Adding 2 2nd round picks is a start. However adding 14ish mill to our current cap situation (Pete Quinn)is going to make it pretty difficult to ice an NHL caliber team. I too remain hopeful for the future. While setting my expectations low enough for the present that there is a remote chance that they could be exceeded. I made the mistake of coming into this season hopeful to see a step forward which has been too disappointing for words.
