[Proposal] JB will circle back to OEL

Recommended Posts

I don't think people realize how close JB was to acquiring OEL, and I think ultimately JB will be successful in landing this very big piece to the Canucks being a contender. It's become evidently clear that the top teams in the league have three excellent defenders, and by acquiring OEL, JB might just have one of the top trios in the league. With guys like OJ (who looks fantastic and getting better with every shift and will be ready to replace Edler next season), and Rathbone ready to make the jump next year on the left side with Myers the Canucks might just have the best D corps in the league.

The OEL deal will happen prior to the deadline and will look something like this:

OEL (8.25 x7= 57.75 mil)

for

ERIKSSON (6.0 x 2= 12.0 mil)

GAUDETTE (950k x 1)

Protected 1st- 2021 (Like Miller deal), but if Canucks retain their 1st this year, then Arizona receives an unprotected 1st next year and a 2nd this year.

Only if they retain salary at this point.  It was really "iffy" before, but another year of his prime gone off that bad contract and still all the expected bad years makes it a bad deal.  Most lists of worst contracts in the league have the OEL one on there.  It also has a NMC which now carries even if he gets traded which means we can't demote or trade him in the later years of the contract.

OEL at $5-6 million over that span sure... at $8.25... that is horrible and can really hamper us in the long term.  We are better off getting a much cheaper guy who might get exposed in expansion.

OJ is hopefully going to eventually replace Edler, but the only way that happens next season is if Edler retires.

And no thanks on OEL, too much money, too much term and  too many restrictions on movement.

This is Benning we're talking about, He doesn't really make big trades. They players he brings in are like duct tape, good enough to hold it together for the time being.

J.T. Miller wants to know what you've been smoking?

meh, spare part in TB, he's been good here, but I wouldn't call that a big trade.

Do you consider Saturn to be a big planet?

J.T. is like Gorilla Tape then?

I wouldn't say he's had the effect on the team you'd expect from a truly "big trade"

8 million for 7 years  for an elite puck moving defenseman that will probably have a bump in play, playing with Hughes is not a bad contract. He's going to remain elite for most of that contract.

Former first round pick, leading scorer last year and people say, not a big trade.   Funny.

at that price he's an excellent replacement for Elder.

This feels more like an offseason move anyway so we might as well see what opportunities expansion brings in the meantime.

He's not declining

He's been on a gradual decline for a couple of seasons. I mean he's not Erik Karlsson who has fallen off a cliff but OEL can see the edge of that cliff and signed for 6 more years at $8.25m will become a nightmare in 3-4 years. Just about the time most expect the Canucks to start making the playoffs consistently and contending for a Cup.
