A 2nd for Pearson and a 4th for Sutter is a fair trade.  Keep in mind that Sutter is a UFA at the end of the season.  These are at TDL, so the salary cap will not be much.  Playoff teams need to stock up on players to take a run.

What's Covid got to do with it?  I believe the requirement is 2 negative test while isolating for a few days.

The player’s cap hit is pro-rated but so is cap space.  If a team is always at the maximum cap they’ll only have the pro-rata of what’s left to the season available.

It’s really just easier to talk in full cap hits as the pro-rata applies to both sides of the equation.  CapFriendly actually makes it really easy and shows the player’s cap hit that can be added with the pro-rata already taken into account and banked cap space.

The situation is so tight in Montreal that they are demoting players to the taxi squad on day offs.  Even at 50% retained they don’t have the TDL cap space to add Pearson.  They also have Perry/Byron and Frolik on their taxi squad so not sure they’d even have interest adding.

Chicago is rebuilding - can’t imagine they’d want to add at the deadline and give up draft picks.  This season is to give their young players experience so adding a veteran UFA is counter productive.  They also already have Soderberg for Sutter’s role.

Value seems fair but looks like the wrong teams to target.  Canucks might have to retain salary to make it work though.  So many teams are in LTIR and there’s not all that much TDL cap space among the contenders.

Per their protocol the NHL asks for 7 day quarantine and 4 negative test regardless of local rules.  It can be more stringent based on local rules - eg the 14 days in Canada when crossing the border.

so what about Roussel and Guadette?

What value could Rousel have the way he's playing?  Might as well just keep him vs getting an extremely late round pick + retaining a chunk of his salary.  Plus he has a modified NTC (and people complained about Gillis handing out too many NTCs).

Good points mil.

I don't think the Canucks (should) add to the team until the offseason (unless something came along that is spectacular value), so if they have to retain salary for either contract, it wouldn't be an issue.  Perhaps they can bump up the 4th to a 3rd pick for Sutts if they retain $

Is there any word on how the NHL will carry out the Playoffs?  I can't imagine teams going back and forth over the border.  Wonder if they'll do an Edm bubble situation like last year.

I was on another hockey site and fans from another team (Penguins) were saying, out of Virtanen/ Roussel/ Pearson they would want Roussel , apparently they're seeking a LW and don't want Pearson back, nor do they see Virtanen being a fit.  Stranger things have happened (of course cap could eliminate any chance of that happening but if they see a fit they could try to make it happen)

They recently talked about playoff format on TSN’s Insider Trading.  Ideally they would like for teams to be able to play in their home arenas but border crossing seems unlikely.  Canadian teams would likely have to relocate to the US after round 2.  To avoid giving an unfair home ice advantage to the US teams they are looking into using neutral sites.  For the finals probably only if the Canadian team is still standing.

I wonder if the Canucks really want to trade Pearson.  They are low in the standings and replacing him might not be all that cheap in free agency.  Don’t think they’d want to just have prospects in the top-6.  Could see them trying to extend him instead.

So why exactly do we shell out the combined draft assets obtained for Pearson and Sutter for JT Compher?  Unless you're expecting him to be the next JT Miller due to his 0.5 point/ game scoring in the past couple seasons and believe that he can contribute the same offensively here, it's quite a bit to pay for a tweener.

I can see Coleman being available (they'd have to protect other guys before him for the ED), but could they have a handshake agreement with him?  Also given the role that he plays as a gritty shutdown type, why do you see Winnipeg letting Lowry go?  It's not like Trevor Lewis has the same impact (Lowry is 6'5" and a beast), and it's not like they're in a rush to bring up Perfetti as the 3C.

Overall, it kind of sux for the Cdn teams.  But then again, the NHL is generally slanted heavily in the US teams' favour.

The big question mark is how ready will Podz be?  I think he will be able to join the 3rd line after several games.  If he can jump up to the 2nd by January, that would be fantastic.  Miller/Bo/Podz = The freight train line.  I've always been interested in seeing what Motte could do on that line; maybe he could play there until Podz is ready.

Definitely need to find a solid 3C for next season. Need an upgrade on RD as well.

I am hoping that the Nucks grab the Pearson 2nd and any other pick or prospect they can get and put it towards unloading Loui's 6M.  If there ever was a time to have some extra cap $, it is in the coming offseason.

Trade deadline 2021..

Pearson -- Late 2nd rounder to playoff team..

Benn ---  late 4th rounder -- Every team need defence depth for long playoff run...Benn has been playing good

Sutter ---  4th rounder UFA --- by the team trade deadline arrives won't be much owing on his contract...

Roussel ---  4th rounder   - He should be trade not the same player after his knee injury...We have depth to fill his position...

Virtanen -- Would only trade if we get player under 26 with upside ? examples -- Kase --to Boston last  year... Ritchie - to Boston

We need to get forward back...

 Virtanen 24- Rathbone -Boston   ----Debrusk 24 , Frederic 22, 6'2 tough

or

Virtanen  24- Ducks  ---- Danton Heiden 24

My question was more of what happened to them in the OP's post. Didn't see anything about moving them out in some fashion. As i undrstand it Roussel has one more year left and Guadette is a RFA.

This is the kind of way I see JB heading with the team for next season. BUT I really do not see this as being much stronger than this season's team. Out: Pearson, Sutter, Gaudette, Edler, Benn. In: Debrusk, Bennett, Podz, Larsson, Tryamkin.

Perhaps the biggest impact would be the change of coach.

Couple of minor points:

- Edler and Hamonic have NMCs, I seriously doubt they waive those to be rentals in this current covid environment.

- I think you are overvaluing what we could get for Sutter and Gaudette. Also no team is taking Eriksson + Rathbone for a 3rd!

My preference is to offload Virtanen and Roussel. Keep Gaudette as a cheap and versatile 13th forward.

That would be great if they took Rousell out of our hands, even for a 4th - 5th rounder. Rousell is trash, he provides absolutely nothing to our team, well maybe other than put us shorthanded. He gave us 1 good season here and hes been worthless since

Just to add to this, I’ll assume that Virtanen gets traded for Danton Heinen.

Debrusk-Bennett-Heinen

Lind or Jasek

Hughes-Larsson

Tryamkin-Schmidt

Juolevi-Myers

Demko

Holtby

I’m not 100% sure if the above team would be cap compliant, but I think the team above definitely would turn some heads.
