Hate to disagree, but if you are including term as well, that is exactly what you DO NOT do to a rebuilding team.  JB did not have to pay 3 x 4, 3 x 4, and 4.3 x 5 for fourth liners. Eating up all the years of ELCs from your young stars by maxing out the cap on a rag tag crew of plugin-players through that duration.  Ideally, there are at least two windows for a rising team. the first when you have a stable of young stars on ECLs and bridge deals, so you (should) have money to add the final pieces like Toffoli, and keep more of your valued veterans who have played here awhile. JB has blown this window. The second will be when Benning or hopefully a new GM, can rid the team of the dead weight and cap penalties,  in a couple of years, and make better choices when finding the right pieces to compliment our core when they are in their prime. I shudder to think of JB being the one responsible to carry this out.

.

.

Ideally yes.   Factually one team since the cap came in, won a cup with a rebuilding teams stable of new stars and the was CHI, Toews and Kane's last year.   It's really a tiny crack of a window, a glimpse into the future.  If it's a window of any kind, it's a window of hopefully playoff experience.   PIT came close but actually lost quite a bit with Malkin, Letang, Crosby and MAF at the start (with Mario and co)...

But yes i'd agree there are two windows on rebuilding teams, the first one with the core  players on their second deals, maybe a trailer coming in on an ELC, maybe not, but more in the pipe anyways,  plus whatever vets they have still from the last core or the teams brought in.    That window is approaching this team now.

The second window is where the core players reach that 26-32 prime time.   WSH, ST. Louis and TB recently won cups in this window.   I like to bring this up because the team we will have then will look nothing like the one we have now, much like the team we had when Luongo first came in (Naslund, Linden Mitchell etc being our older vets) looked nothing like the one that rattled off five division titles, two president trophies and a trip to the final.

Sure we can get mad and upset about all the wasted cap, maybe like PIT we could of brought in a bunch of Hossa, Guerin types and had a good crack at it. But history shows with a rebuilding team, it's a tough one to crack.   If the play-ins counted as a round and we beat MIN one more time, 17 games is like making the conference final which is pretty darn good despite the cap.   The same thing CAR did a year before with Justin Williams.     They are now in the first real window, but have a trailer in Svecknikov ... much like we still do with Podz.   They are a couple years ahead of us, on their third rebuild now too.   This one sure bit, and our teams are similar in the quality of core guys.   Good things could be coming our way soon too, and really they should be.

Looks like Lazy Jake is now tied with some goalies in points with a bunch more a point or two behind him.    Can't believe Uncle Jim let TT walk out on us to Montreal where he has almost ten times the points of Lazy Jake for roughly a million and a half more.  What drugs was Uncle Jim on keeping this parasitic deadwood on the roster and why was he not dumped at Traded deadline for anything????  What a waste of a first pick!

Really hoping this offseason will be the end of the Virtanen experiment. Most of all Im just tired of watching him play, & having the debate on whether he's a player.

If he isn't permanently benched after the game tonight against Ottawa causing one goal on his own team, taking a double 4 Min Minor penalty, making bad passes and floating around like a cork - then I don't know what it will take to purge this team of that guy.    He's totally hopeless.  Should be playing Junior B way out in Abbotsford again....

JB should of kept TT instead of him for roughly $1.5M more.   WHAT A MISTAKE !  (Almost as bad as the L.E. signing)

Let’s be honest.  Every Canucks fan loved the LE signing!! Him and the Sedins were magical together (Sweden). No one could have predicted the outcome.

However, letting tofu walk, and signing Jake.... he should be fired on that move alone.!!!
I can’t stand Jake!  Never could. Not from day one when he showed up fat one training camp.   Lazy prick!

Jake for Zadorov,

realizing Zadorov is an RFA,  both need new scenery..

Jake is 2.5 for one more year.

Zadorov coming off a 3.2m contract,

thinking Zadorov might take a 2 year cut if he knew an old teammate and comrade if Tryamkin was here.

The imminent arrival of Podz,  MacEwans decent first (Covid) year of play..  and any of the full abilities of Motte Highmore, Vesey, Boyd and other prospects hoping to show, have pushed Jake past the tipping point.

as I understand it, his buy out is next to nothing,  but it is a buyout position better saved for someone else.

Is Zadorov really out of favour, or buried behind depth? Otherwise, like why would they want Genius Jake? This is not an era where we can hide how much of a useless player he is.

This earlier in the week,  apparently his name came up in trades in Chicago..

I wonder if the Canucks didn’t inquire,  and perhaps more talk to take place regarding this player . I’m sure they will want to see if something changes in his play by seasons end.

The USA is a mess these days,  I wouldn’t be at all surprised to understand how a player from a completely other culture and country might not be happy there.

NOT  entirely sure, but we might even have an opportunity to protect him in the ED.

Not quite sure how we stand on our ED protection for D men.. but even if Seattle picked Zadorov,  we’ve moved Jake along and letting the dice roll.

Latest On Nikita Zadorov, Chicago Blackhawks

April 20th, 2021 at 8:30pm CST • By Zach Leach

The Chicago Blackhawks were reportedly listening to offers for defenseman Nikita Zadorov at the NHL Trade Deadline, but ultimately decided not to move him. However, that doesn’t mean that the two sides will stay together for much longer. As Ben Pope writesfor the Chicago Sun-Times, the Blackhawks have dropped some hints that they are not content with the big blue liner and time is running out for him to prove himself.

Zadorov, 25, is in his first season in Chicago after coming over from the Colorado Avalanche in the Brandon Saad trade this past off-season. The Blackhawks hoped that Zadorov would step into a lineup that was missing many difference-makers on the back end and would transform into a bona fide top pair defenseman. While Zadorov has still been impressive as a physical force and solid defender, there has not been much else to praise about Zadorov’s game this season. He has been firmly entrenched as a second-pair defender in terms of time on ice, is fifth in defensive scoring and even lower in per-game production, and is on pace for a career-high in giveaways, even in a shortened season. Zadorov has merely continued to play the same role in Chicago as he did in Colorado, that of a complementary stay-at-home defenseman. Whilethat is not without value, it isn’t what was expected of the 2013 first-round pick and may not be worth the cost to the Blackhawks. The team has not-so-subtly expressed their frustration recently, acquiring a younger and similar style of defender in RileyStillman and then making Zadorov a healthy scratch on deadline day after discussing him with other teams beforehand.

This off-season, Zadorov presents a number of challenges to Chicago. The impending restricted free agent will need a new contract, which at a minimum will require a $3.2MM qualifying offer. However, despite his underwhelming effort this season, Zadorov can probably argue for making more than that and has the option to file for arbitration to support that claim. The problem for the Blackhawks is that they have very few contracts coming off the books this off-season and are projected to have limited cap flexibility to make other moves. Retaining Zadorov at a higher number even further reduces that cap space without making a material change to their roster, which is only a fringe playoff team this season. A potential arbitration case makes using their cap space even more problematic. If therelatively young blue liner demands a long-term deal as well, that becomes an issue with a number of young players already pushing for play time. Beyond the actual contract, the only way that Chicago can ensure that they even retain Zadorov’s RFA rights beyond July 21 is to protect him in the upcoming NHL Expansion Draft. With Duncan Keith and Connor Murphy as virtual locks to be protecting, adding Zadorov to that group would mean exposing valuable veteran Calvin de Haan and the recently-acquired Stillman. Yet, if they don’t protect Zadorov he could very easily be selected and lost for nothing.

In order to avoid a difficult expansion decision and possible contract battle and arbitration case, theBlackhawks may decide to re-ignite trade talks for Zadorov once their season has come to an end. Until then, Pope notes that Zadorov will be given every chance to prove that he is worthy of a longer look in Chicago. With de Haan and Adam Boqvist currently injured and the Blackhawks fighting for a playoff spot, Zadorov has the chance to step up and finally show that he can be a complete top-four defenseman. If he succeeds, perhaps all of the off-season issues fall by the wayside in favor of keeping a rare physical specimen and good young defender at all costs. However, if he falters then the partnership between the Blackhawks and Zadorov could be coming to an end sooner rather than later.

I was a big supporter of Jake’s, and had hoped that management and Coaching would give him every opportunity to be the player he could be with his hometown organization.

I beleive Every opportunity has been given and Jake has regrettably, as I’m sure he is,

proven “ample” progress.

If a hockey trade can be made with someone in the same situation, we should do it.

perhaps keeping our focus on Defence rather than offence.

A trade with Anaheim for Heinen would have helped us,  I’m quite familiar with Danton and watch a lot of his BC Junior hockey before he went to college.

Heinen is a solid versatile complimentary player,  but with the right line mates playing the way he does,  he focuse better on shooting outside of the lanes.

kid has an ace wrist shot,  physically he is gumby, hard to knock off his balance.

We should be looking at

Zadorov Chi

Evengy Svechnikov Det.  (recently waivered)

Jake is a top line player now, and when he plays on the top line he doesn't make any more mistakes than any other top line player. Unfortunately he gets screwed over and moved down or sat down way quicker than anyone else would. In fact it's pretty much impossible for other top line players to get moved down no matter how bad they play. So Jake is getting screwed over as are canuck fans afaiac. Jake has the perfect physique for winning playoff series so no way do we let him go.

I have read this like 4 times now and I think that you may actually believe Jake Virtanen is a top line player. :frantic:

Yes, and he sucks when he's not playing on the top line with other top line players, being the top line player that he is.
