Very true. You have to make $6m in Canada to end up with the same amount of money in your pocket as as an American team player making $4.

Thanks for that CptCanuck16!

There is so much politics, and behind the scenes stuff that the average fire Benning Canucks "fan" doesn't understand.

Yes... there is a reason we got those players.. no one else wanted to sign them for that money or term.

It isn’t revisionist history when many folks were  worried about those contracts when they happened.

Eriksson is a bit of a pass even though he is the worst contract.  It was a well received move and pretty much everyone thought he would fit with the Sedins.  It was still obviously the wrong decision, and he should know better than we do.

Beagle, Ferland, Myers and Holtby were all contracts that a lot of folks cringed at when they were signed.

Roussel was fairly well received when he signed, but also hasn’t worked out.

Any one or two of them you can live with... every team has a player or two on a bad contract.  It is the sum total of so many of them that is the really ugly part for us.  The exact same mistake over and over.

Regarding Erickson, it seems to me that he has just been doggin it ever since he became a Canuck. Lacking in effort and unwilling to get physically involved. Benning’s mistake was in being a poor judge of character. Erickson has been very skilled in doing the absolute minimum to avoid a breach of contract lawsuit. I would be surprised if Canucks did not have their lawyers carefully study video of Erickson’s “efforts”. However, they should have fired his butt down to the minors after the first year of this bs. I wonder if Erickson ever feels the least bit guilty in cashing his paycheques? Basically, that contract has prevented us from having a true top six player in his place and that is a crucial defect in this team. Add in the overpaid mediocrities of B, S and R and it is no surprise the team is where it is. And to cap it, the top players know this and it has to affect their commitment.

I see what you're saying. He has clearly been the better goalie all season. But the Canucks haven't played the same goalie in back to backs since at least Louongo. It was ro be expecting Holtby would get the start tonight. Remember, Green never deviates from his system.

I'm certain Markstrom has played back to back

Listening to 650 post game (first time) was quite painful, this game was on Holtby and nobody was really calling him out - just for this game.  Otherwise, same talking point and the issues are dependent on who is talking....

I’m not sure why people get so hung up on Travis Green. Is he doing a great job? Not necessarily but there are worse problems. Remember this team over achieved by nearly making it to the conference finals with Travis Green. What’s the difference this year? Roster construction. This is on Benning.

Or they finally got to the point of tuning him out.

Ok everyone knows the coaching is bad. But the GM shares equal blame, if not more for hiring said coaches and giving assistant coaches like Baumgartner extensions<_<

Let’s bring in Halford and Brough as assistant coaches. Obviously, the most important quality in coaching this team is a good sense of humour.

Maybe the older veterans that know this is there last contract and then it’s either Russia or retirement. Would it really be smart for someone like Gaudette to just quit on a coach while he is trying to make his way? That would be dumb.

This team needs to defend better but they also need the personnel to get it done. It’s terrible. By far the worst on paper in the North.

Gillis was in charge of 6 drafts.  In those 6 drafts he drafted 37 players.  Out of those 37 players, only 14 played at least one game in the NHL.  23 players he drafted out of 37 players never played a single game in the NHL.  Out of the 14 players he drafted that played in the NHL, only 6 played more than 100 games.  in 2010 he drafted 5 players, 4 never played a game in the NHL and one player played in one NHL game.  Imagine picking an entire draft class where all the players drafted combine for ONE NHL game.

The fact is that Gillis left this team in complete shambles.  Only one player remains on the team that was a Gillis draft pick.  Those 6 years of pathetic drafting is why it has taken this long to rebuild this team.  And to add to that Aquilini made the choice to try and give the Sedins one last shot at a Cup, so the early decisions to trade picks and get high priced veterans came from ownership.  The reason we signed Loui was to give the Sedins one last shot at a Cup.  It didn't work out so Benning needed to fill other holes to retool on the fly.  In came Sutter, Roussel and Beagle.  Again, bad decisions looking back now but the idea of the retool on the fly came from ownership.

Ultimately, we should have just started a full rebuild the first year Benning took over.  But with the Sedins still here earning $6 million it wasn't going to happen.  Now we are paying the price.  So we need to let the bad contracts run out, play the kids and ride it out from here.  Benning needs to hire a coach that can get the most out of this talented group of young players.  He will get one more shot to right the ship.  Let's see what happens.

Good context, the X factor through out this whole thing (imo), is if Aquaman was ok with full rebuild or just a retool...

Wasn't that due to injury though?  Green either had to play him or lose for sure with an emergency call up?
