Jeff Skinner for Loui Eriksson (Proposal)

Recommended Posts

OK, this is not a full trade proposal, but more of an idea, that maybe something to consider...................

This is more a call for proposals, where you guys, come up with the trade, idea's

Here is my idea..............but maybe it is not a complete proposal........

Loui Eriksson for Jeff Skinner @ 50 % , Dylan Cozens, and 2021 - 1st

Now, my proposal has a caveat..............we buy out Skinner at 50%.........here is the buyout numbers........remember we are paying 50 %

I totally get it is a big commitment, but it is a great return

Looks weird. And I dont think either the Canucks nor the Sabres want to make this deal. So don't think so. Sabres aren't giving up their young ones like Cozens and a top 10 draft pick to get rid of  bad contract. How do they answer to Eichel/Reinhart/Dahlin who are entering prime years.

So if I am understanding this correct, you want to trade paying Loui for one more year in exchange for getting hit by Skinner's cap hit for 12 more years?

I don't believe that would be worth Cozens and a 1st.  But maybe that's just me.

Partially.............as I am presenting an idea, that is not totally complete, and am looking for imput

Maybe we add Roussel and ask for another 1st or 2nd or prospect

I am fully aware that it is a huge deal, that probably will not fly, but I am looking at Buffalo having Skinner there at 9 Million per ad totally useless, and I am sure they would love to move him out, even if they had to take 50% of the hit, so what does it take? What are they willing to pay? What are we willing accept?

So, basically Buffalo is on the hook for a lot for a long time...................9 million cap for 6 more years (54 Million) or 40 million on a buy out, or 20 Million, if they can find someone to share it with.

So is Eriksson (6 Million) and Roussel (3 Million) plus Cozens and 2021-1st, plus maybe another 1st?

I am not sure of any of it....only an idea

I totally understand that Drakrami, and its a good point, but just remember the pain we suffered through with 6 years of Eriksson

Maybe they would not want to pay the price, but this is more a question for discussion purposes

It is why I asked the question in the form of a call for proposal.........I have no clue

Thanks for the input! Cheers

I just don't think the Sabres would be willing to part with Cozens, nor should they be

I don't want anything to do with that Skinner contract, Buffalo's gonna have to hope he bounces back because they're stuck with that one for the long haul

Even at 50% that's 4.5M for the next six seasons, taking that on would be counterintuitive when we've got so much cap being freed up over the next two offseasons

I mean, even with a buyout.. it's not worth it imo

Benning was not given the green light to buy out players this off-season.  Doubt much has changed.  The Canucks have fired staff and others had to take paycuts but somehow have money to put that kind of money in a buyout.

Buffalo needs to rebuild - giving up picks and high end prospects is the last thing they should do.  Here they’d get rid of their promising young players/picks and not even get full cap relief.  If they are starting over they probably don’t even need the cap relief as picks/prospects are on ELCs.

I can't imagine having to stomach $8,972,222 of dead cap space next season in one guy, on top of having to re-sign Petey, Hughes AND Demko... not to mention $4.5 million and $6.5 million respectively in 2025-26 and 2026-27.  The other years look... palatable at $1.5 million per but that's a big anchor that no one wants to take (even if they dished out their top cheap asset in Dahlin, the team looking to acquire them had better make sure they have enough cap space because that's going to be around 25% tied up to two players).

Also remember that Detroit received Marc Staal and a 2nd pick straight up for future considerations and Staal is a pending UFA.  Anything short of Roussel + Baertschi + Loui going back, while getting probably Cozens and couple 1sts seems like a rip-off since they lose a long-term dead weight and we shed 2 years of a lesser contract (Buffalo could always try Skinner with Eichel, but that's for another topic).

Our cost would be........

1. 2021-2022                $700,000

2. 2022-2023             $4,500.000

3. 2023-2024                $700,000

4. 2024-2025                $700,000

5. 2025-2026             $2,200,000

6. 2026-2027             $3,200,000

7. 2027-2028             $1,200,000

8. 2028-2029             $1,200,000

9. 2029-2030             $1,200,000

10. 2030-2031           $1,200,000

11. 2031-2032           $1,200,000

12. 2032-2033           $1,200,000

No doubt it is alot of years, but IMO, it is only years 2 and 6 that are poison (Bad)

But we do, get rid of 1 bad year ourselves, in year 1, where we net $8,000,000 clear, when we need it

so there are benifits, and I honestly do not think years 7 to 12 are of any real consequence,

nor years 1, 3, and 4.............

So, its 2 tough years, (but not Eriksson tough) for Cozens and 2021-1st

If it were my money I wouldn't do the deal you propose. Essentially you are taking on about $19m of real cost (i.e. 50% of what is paid to JS for a buy out) compared to only $4m of real cost (LE next season).

However, if money was no object (yeah right), then VAN should absolutely take this deal. Getting Cozens and an unprotected 1st (with currently best odds to be first overall) would be worth the $1.2m cap hit for the next forever.

I really can't see Buffalo being interested tho. It's almost a lose-lose deal. Nice try tho!

I appreciate the thought Jan.  I do.  However we can look at it like this from an ownership position. I am by no means a fire Benning or Green guy buuuuut all of the bad contracts are expiring soon Sutter Baretschi Spooner this year. Luo Loui to a lesser extent beagle rooster the next. Nicely coinciding with when our core will be entering their prime. Wouldn't it be nice to enter the window with a clean slate for whom ever may be captaining the ship at that time? I personally feel the canucks should just take their licks this season and next load up on picks and come back ready to compete like a 3 headed hydra with no dead cap on the books holding them back.

To your proposal. I think much like the Loui contract Buf ends up choking on that until the very end. I think your ask is close to what it would take however I don't think we are the right dance partner. A team on the cusp of a rebuild like the penguins/sharks could turn this into a win in the short and long term. Maybe Maaaaaaaybe a team in the off season bites on this after his 7.5m bonus is paid but I doubt it.

It’s an interesting idea but I’d have to vote no.   Eriksson will be off the books at the end of next season and could even be gone by the end of this season with the right sweetener.   All of our bad contracts will be gone before October 2022.

I want to see what the Canucks will do in the Summer of 2022 with all kinds of cap options.   Skinner’s presence would serve as a hindrance to that.

Thanks guys, good points

But here is a little why it came to me

It is 19 minus 9 million (Eriksson and Roussel), so the actual cost is around 11 Million

But, Cozens, 2021st (top 100) + another pick will strengthen our team and put alot of players in the same age group. This makes us a potential deep playoff team, and that is money in the bank. Now, if it speeds that process up by a couple of years, and we get say 3 extra playoff series, that is minimum 6 home games, at approx. 4 million per game, or approx. 24 Million dollars for a 11 million dollar investment.

That is not even considering, any extraordinary playoff runs, or heaven forbid a cup. And this is not to even consider the extra profit, the team would generate, from hockey related revenue from more successful regular seasons.

That is also, not to mention, that with more assets, comes the ability to last longer at the top, which again, more revenue..............so it is not as simple as, it costs alot!

Not to say, this is a great idea, but no team would actually do it, unless there is a benifit. No San Jose, not anyone, unless it makes them money. Certainly, a owner and GM have to run the numbers, but if they think it makes them money, or saves them money in Buffalo's case, then it is possible.

Cheers Guys! Thanks for playing!

Here's all the problems I see with this::

1) We have a bunch of prospects coming up and we are almost out of the clear with Eriksson only having 1 more year after this. We need to be able to afford keeping those prospects around if we want to have a shot at succeeding. Adding Cozens and the 1st would just add to that issue.

2) The 2021 draft is a weak draft. What we'll get out of that 1st round pick, while likely someone good, is still probably not the same as in a draft like last year. We should probably consider that.

3) Buffalo's unlikely to do this anyway in my opinion. They've been going through tough times and they really need to win now. Throwing away Cozens like that harms those chances of finally getting into the playoffs. Eriksson's certainly not going to get them to that promised land they've been deprived of.

Honest opinion here, but I think if we did this move, if could severely cripple us for years. We might not end up seeing a cup contender if we just throw around money like this.

I mean if it happened I would probably find a way to support it. I was never really  big Cozens guy though I'm sure he will be fine another rw isn't really what we need. as I said I think it's really important to wipe the bad cap slate clean. We have a good core there should be no excuses left for why we dont have the cap to pay the guys we have because we have skinner for x more years.

To be faaaaiiiir.....if we really could jettison Eriksson + Roussel next season, and Seattle picks up Myers...factoring in the $750k cap hit for Skinner next season....below is the kind of roster JB could assemble. Add to that a possible 1st overall (e.g. Owen Power) in our system. Pretty mouthwatering lineup.

Someone mentioned "clean slate" in 2022-23. Well the below roster would give us $23m in cap space for that season alone (this is when Skinner's buy out is at its highest cap hit of $4.5m), with only Boeser and Motte as MUST resign. Edler and Virtanen are optional resigns with that money.

I totally get everyone's reluctance, but we would have enough short term (meaning next 3 years), and the cap will have to go up before then

It is not like this is happening but I do wish people would respond to the numbers.......It is not like I do not agree, but the 3rd year is pretty much when you have to worry, and that is the year we do not have any of our stars needing contracts..........

IMO, Tampa, Pitts, Toronto, Dallas, now Colorado all have to do the same balancing act..............and you are all probably right. I just wanted to throw something out there for the heck of it.
