Jimmy Vesey | #24 | LW

-Vintage Canuck-

Recommended Posts

Another enigmatic hockey player whose biggest claim to fame is his refusal to play for two consecutive  NHL teams who held his rights.

Has had skill at the college level but generally a disappointment at pro level. So it remains to be seen: is he plug n play or just a plug?

I think bringing in Hawrluk was the right move. Injuries like that would scare me too. Leivo hasn’t been very effective since imo

while I am not a JimmerFanBoi , I don't hate all his moves

(how's that for an endorsement?)

I was OK with Hawryluk over Leivo as Leivo had a high chance of being our next Ferland

Then Hawryluk gets injured in Camp... ho hum

I think Leivo lost his job to Brett Ritchie

First, condolences.

Second, sounds like he'll slot in perfectly to our bottom 6. #ThankYouJim

Except if we're going for sweater fillers in the bottom six, having a near-league-minimum salary is a significant improvement if the performance is the same.

So Jake Virtanen 2.0?

I swear you just described Virtanen's tenure with the Nucks haha.

Well, Vesey is 3 years older, so maybe there is still hope for Jake?

Jake will never escape the criticism due to where he was drafted, which isn't his fault, but he could silence the critics more if he just took more of a dog on a bone approach and stopped thinking while playing. In Vesey's defense, him and Jake are completely different players and maybe Vesey wasn't jiving with the 'skill' that he was surrounded with. He did have some chances playing with Tavares (Who is also not looking very sharp -- even though his point totals would say otherwise) and didn't seem to make the most of his opportunities.

Not expecting much, all we can do is hope he finds a spark.

Would be hard to be worse than Eriksson, so.. there's that.

does he kill penalties?

cuz that is all Louigi does at this point

I assume Michaelis will be papered down to Utica now?  With Motte coming back, I'm pretty sure someone is going to have to be sent down and Michaelis makes the most sense.

Can't say I'm that excited about adding Vesey but he's on a low, expiring contract and still has upside even if he's now way past prospect status (27 YO).  As others have speculated, he's at least someone that can fill a hole if the Canucks do move out a roster player like Pearson.  I'm very much hoping that this waiver acquisition is a sign of the Canucks looking to sell.

Low risk, moderate reward.

Hopefully we see him with Sutter and Gaudette.

Gives us a bit of LW depth (most of ours is on the right), cheap guy, good size, some promise, no quarantine issues like a call up would have.

Good move.

Hopefully prelude to a trade towards the TDL as well.

Gaud's needs an offensive minded partner, maybe this is it. He hasn't had many guys who can score on his line this year: https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/players/adam-gaudette

There should be zero optimism about this player.  He has no upside.  With that said, there should also be zero negativity.  He has no downside.

Be real people - the needle will not move with Jimmy Vesey.  He will provide neither a positive nor a negative impact to the Canucks roster.

The only real benefit to this move is if the Canucks can move out an expensive bottom 12 player they have an inexpensive bottom 12 player that can be thrown out there as a warm body.

that is possibly the best Canuckish post ever

2 thumbs up

a beer and a huggy bear if I could give them all to you

Not that I'm expecting much out of Vesey, but hopefully the additional will help spark a guy like Gaudette.

I said earlier that I hope this move signals that the Canucks are going to be selling this TDL.  Right now, this move gives the Leafs a bit of a cap space and they have already been open about wanting to acquire a winger.  Can't see how they would fit someone like Pearson in their cap situation, but it might work if the Canucks take back someone like Engvall and retain some of Pearson's salary.  I wouldn't be thrilled if the return for Pearson was just Engvall though.

Good move...adds depth.  Vesey has some offensive upside and good size.  I think this would like great:

Boeser Miller Hogs

Pearson Bo Virtanen

Vesey Petey Gaudette

Hawryluk Beagle Sutter (and when Motte returns, Hawryluk Sutter Motte for the 4th line)

Petey will not be on the 3rd line, he is a first liner. if anything Jake goes back to the 3rd when Petey comes back, heck even Vesey has more points than Jake!

I don’t have high expectations, but also there isn’t really any downside.

If it means we don’t see Eriksson dress again, it is already a win.  We save a couple hundred thousand in cap by burying Eriksson and having Vesey on the active roster.

3rd line to start and maybe some 2nd unit PK time, if we move on from Pearson it gives us some experienced fodder to play in that spot for the rest of the season.

If he works out, maybe re-signing again for a sub $1 million contract as we exit more expensive veterans like Roussel/Sutter/Beagle/etc.

That's what I'm hoping... MacEwen/ Vesey/ Hawryluk/ Michaelis/ Lind with capable bottom-6 centers, and on the cheap, would look great.
Funny thing though is that Leafs fans on Twitter are actually happy that he's gone.

the next 5 games are key to that. If the Cancucks can pul off a miracle and take the next 4/5 - W tonight, 2 Ws against MTL, 1-1 vs WPG then I think Jim sticks with the group and lets them go for it.

If we're 5+ points behind MTL by our 5 day break starting on Mar 25th then we're sellers, imo.
