Sums it up.  This is purely the authors decision.

I agree it was the author’s decision but since it came after an online petition was launched I can’t say “purely.”

Scholastic said it was pulling The Adventures of Ook and Gluk shortly after Billy Kim, a Korean American father of two children, ages 5 and 7, started a petition on Change.org demanding an apology from the publisher after he borrowed the book from a library.

When you see classic tv shows, movies, and even Disney cartoons, they are filled with racist/homophobic jokes. But, that was normal in society at the time.

But people fought to have these reference unacceptable to insert into media today.

Isn't inclusivity in society better today than it was 50 years ago? If you agree that society is more tolerant now, it's that way because people fought for it.

There were people back then (and I'm sure there are plenty of people still around now) who thought everything was fine back then. We can't be so arrogant to think things are perfect now because it's better than it was. I'm glad society has evolved from where it was 50-100 years ago, and that didn't happen by accident.

It's not always about "cancel culture". Change only happens when people make the effort.

A healthy lifestyle and diet plays way bigger role than anything.  Obvious if you're wealthier you can afford healthier food and have more free time to exercise, etc.... but where is the racism?  Is it anti-racism that is allowing Latinos and Asians to outlive their white/black/indigenous counterparts?  Or maybe different cultural cuisine that is playing a bigger role here?

The Latino ethnic group tends to be economically disadvantaged compared to Whites.... but their life expectancy is higher.  In Japan, their poor still have higher life expectancy than those in North America.  Is that because of the lack of racism in one location?  Or maybe the average Japanese diet is by far way healthier than in Canada or US?  When you think of the average "Canadian" meal, what do you think of?  Steak and potatoes?  Burgers?  Pasta?  Those are hardly fitness gurus will recommend when dieting.  Now what is the average meal for those who are Latino?  The Chinese, Japanese, Koreans.... etc.

It makes good headline to say racism is a major cause, but it goes back to cultural values.  Why is that Asian consistently do better in every single metric than every other ethnic group (save for Jews and certain immigrants from Africa)?  What makes Asians the "exception"?  I would say the majority of Asians living here (exception of more recent immigrants) fled their traditional home country in one form or another.  How many were those who fled Vietnam during the war?  How many fled China during many conflicts and upheavals the past centuries?  Immigrants from other equally impoverished East and SE Asian countries with civil conflicts, poverty, dictatorships, etc?  And now those same people and their descendants (who also faced the bigotries of history) are more prosperous than the "standard" Whites.  If there is some racism in play, they're definitely doing it wrong.

The biggest oppressor for each ethnic groups aren't the "ruling class" or "white" or whatever.... it's their own ethnic groups.

your not looking into this deep enough, if you start by watching my cbc video and actually going into statistics on racial pay gaps you will begin to realize that I have truth behind what I'm Saying. there is no denying that the average immigrant family is better off than the average native american or african american family. coming across with an average of 47,000$  .  Wealth buys health, wealth, and knowledge. stop pretending racism Isn't a huge factor for these ethnic groups. if your below the poverty line, you ain't buying fish for dinner, your buying noodles and rice, and have special occasions were you get actual meat and vegetables other than potatoes and corn. it's a god dang miracle when some of these kids make it into college. the low rate of minimum wage and lack of local oppurtunities in these impoverished communities brings crime, drugs and violence. the kids of these families are often left to fend for themselves, with little parental supervision, guidance or encouragement. most don't have sports teams with  coaches so they are out in the street getting influences from other kids with no parental guidance. sometimes their parents are addicts gone for days, which leaves the kids begging, stealing, selling drugs and even prostitution. It's a sad story, but a real one. the cycle continues, the opression continues and the opportunities are never improved.

But hey, maybe if they just had some fish? walk around town giving out some fish will fix the situation, right?

Just did. The title centered on the Atlanta shootings of 6 Asians but forgot to tell you 2 white woman and a Latino were also shot, the massage parlors they worked in were known bordellos frequented by the perp who claims his problem is sex addiction.

I tell you what though if you really want to impress us with your superior virtue in discovering this new found issue of anti-Asian racism I have a couple examples of for-real, Anti-Asian racism for you to self-righteously beat your breast over.

Another vicious crime against an Asian caught on video in NYC subway and still no white supremacy in sight

You won't like the source on that one though. That's a problem, I find there's this thing with some where they're trained to believe that facts stop being facts if the wrong person is telling them about them.

Oh well...here's another one from somebody you won't like. Republican Senator John Kennedy.

https://100percentfedup.com/senator-john-kennedy-challenges-biden-administration-to-support-racial-discrimination-suit-against-harvard-university/

So even if this sudden interest the left has in a proposed increase in Anti-Asian racism comes with some new stats they like it may be a case of 'Physician heal thyself.'

who cares about who is doing the violence ? it's disgusting either way.

I fully support the african americans recieving equal opportunities, the prejudice that people are complaining about is not just reduced to Asian communities. and the response is  due to similar prejudice placed upon the poorer communities.

The argument i will bring is that grades can and are being bought by wealthy communities. when studies finally come out showing how wealthy families have major differences in student enrollment based just about wealth alone. The school's then equalize the oppurtunity by giving the less fortunate the benefit of the doubt, because it's proven the less fortunate had to work harder for those similar grades.

No. That's what equal  "Outcome" looks like. Are you familiar with the equality of opportunity versus equality of outcome issue? Basically equal opportunity is equality of rights to pursue happiness. Equality of outcome is about statist control of the outcome the Powers that Be would perceive as equal. For example when "Yale University denied admission to Asian-American students based on race," that was equality of outcome. They wanted to favor one race while denying another to enforce a perceived equality. Or why Elizabeth Warren would apply to Harvard by lying she was native American." She was hoping for an unearned equity. Equality of outcome.

your stretching the truth, it was not a denial over race, it's a preference based on wealth and racial privlige. they would rather give a student with less privlige and wealth compared with similar grades over the same student with asian, or white privlige. why the preference? because the priviliged races are over represented in these schools.

the left call it equal opportunity

the right call it equality of outcome.

they are the same thing. it's a good thing to help the less fortunate, call it whatever they want as long as it's happening i'm happy.

and again studies show, that grades can be bought. the average under privliged student works harder to get into these schools with less tutoring and more hard work.

But don't worry the real rich aren't oppressed, parents that donate 500k will still get thier kids in the school. "It's called the back door entry" and not too long ago like 2 years

ago thier was the "side door entry" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_college_admissions_bribery_scandal

the rich but not overtly rich are required to "gasp" fight fair by hiring admiision counsellors who explain to the students/parents the best strategy to get admitted to the school of thier choice. the average score of the SAT's of these counsellor guided students is 300 points higher than non- counselled students.

the average rich student in school is most likely of lower calibre

Actually the equality of Opportunity versus equality of Outcome discussion has nothing to do with race. You don't appear to understand it. Perhaps I'm explaining it badly. Feel free to look it up. I didn't invent it.

I hear about it most from Classic Liberals.

Define "classic liberal"

I think of people like Sam Harris, Dave Rubin and Carl Benjamin as being classic liberals. Carl (Sargon of Akkad) Benjamin is where I started hearing about opportunity versus outcome.

Maybe Bill Maher.

Myself, I think of classic liberals as more that portion of the left that can be reasoned with, as opposed to say a Progressive Socialist.

Nope, not to me. We both may want the same result but for me facts will always matter. If the author came to his conclusion after introspection, great. If he felt his work wasn’t racist but felt forced into it then more harm than good was done.

By the way, I know zero about this book and have no idea whether it is in fact racist so I don’t offer an opinion if it was the correct choice or not.

So there's no racism then.  Assuming we are working with the premises that minorities are given unfair treatment, you would see Whites pulling out on top in terms of health, wealth and opportunities.  Instead you have a mosaic of results.... Asians with higher income and long lifespan, Latinos with lower income but high age expectancy, Blacks and Indigenous with lower score for both and then Whites in the middle.

Asians, Jews and Latinos back in the days suffered the same injustice and bigotry as the Indigenous and Blacks.... yet each group as a whole went on separate trajectories.  Are TPTB are selectively racist now?  Why is that Asians have been so successful that there actual racist policies in place in certain fields to allow others a better chance of getting in?  Why those who identifies as Jews are disproportionally ending up in high income jobs?  I mean Jews are regularly targeted by a plethora of religious and cultural groups throughout history and even today.  Why do Latinos have high lifespans even though their incomes are less?

I hate to sound bigoted, but not all cultures are equal when it comes to competing in the modern global economy.  When you think of what job a stereotypical Asian person would get, what would it be?  A doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or an accountant.  From most people I know.... almost everyone is in a variant of each field.  What's the Jewish stereotype.... lawyer, doctor, banker.  Friend I know how are Jewish.... they're pretty much in a variant of those jobs.  Suffice to say, a bachelor degree is a requirement, many with post-grad studies on top.  I have very few friends who are Asian that don't have a degree.

Now think of Black culture, what do you think Black kids are aspiring to be when they grow up?  Basketball player, rappers, etc.  The prevalence of gang, thug culture is corrupting those youths.  I rarely have friends who are Black nowadays (drifted apart).  Those I went to school with.... they are started dressing, talking, acting like the rappers you see on MTV back in the days.  Trying to be all ghetto and speaking in ebonics... like dude, we're from the same the run-of-the-mill East Vancouver neighbourhood with all those Vancouver Specials.... we didn't grow up in Compton.

Then it also comes down to financial literacy.  Some cultures do better than others.  Renting as an Asian is near blasphemy.  For many in the Asian community.... getting a degree and mortgage for a home is almost a requirement before getting married.  My White friends on the other hand are generally renters, regardless of their income.  My Asians friends, either owning a place or living with parents.  Now is this racism?  Or just better foresight and planning to ensure success for future generations?

Using the racism is easy because it's used externally.  It's simpler to blame others for any issues.  Very easy to go, "we're poor because they stole from us", "they have more because it's unfair".  It's much harder to accept that faults and errors are actually from within, that most of society's ills (especially in develop countries) are from yourselves and your own groups.  Now are there actually racist and bigoted people out there, of course.... there will always be donkey-holes out there using whatever excuse to harm others, but as for some grand conspiracy to hinder others.... it's 2021, not 1921.  Using past grievances is irrelevant.

you might be right about whitey trying to invoke change, they probably have read "facts" about how Racism affects people mentally, physically and financially. I bet you in your life you have had something not true about you turned into a joke against you. the difference between them and you is not only do they have to hear the same jokes as you, they also have to hear racist jokes, stereotypes, discrimination, racism and violence. these things are not imaginary, just because you deem them so.

pyschiastrists have done countless studies in the past 50 years, why would they be wrong about the study affected by racism? I mean do you believe a pyschiatrist who diagnoses your mother if they had dementia? do you believe a doctor who says that exercise and proper diet will lower your chance for stroke, heart disease, and diabetes?

all these things are not fake, just like racism. so go ahead, keep your head in the sand.

  • Native Americans: 75.06 years
  • African Americans: 75.54 years
  • White Americans: 79.12 years
  • Hispanic Americans: 82.89 years
  • Asian Americans: 86.67 years

Whitey is constantly on behalf of minorities asserting what they should be offended about, as well as everyone else for that matter and if you aren't then you're somehow a lesser than them/racist. Not only do you do an actual disservice to minorities in regards to actual racism by fanning the flames of non-issues such as this but you intellectually insult them as if they're completely incapable of making these determinations themselves. You don't get to be more offended than the actual target audience. And you, nor anybody else for that fact has yet to demonstrate any of this alleged racist material. I keep hearing about it but not a single example has been provided. But what whitey continues to do regardless is claim that some great injustice was resolved to make themselves feel.. significant and morally superior to those who can distinguish between actual racism and a farce such as this.

This sort of hate is just baggage. It doesn’t do the people who feel this way any good. Life is too short to be pissed off all the time.

My father(Trinidadian) was an immigrant and my mother used to live on an Native reserve with my grandmother and step-grandfather(who is native, both have passed since). They’ve both been through some $&!# and both know that hate is pointless and the only thing hate generates is more hate.

I have cousins who are black muslims on my fathers side. I have have extended family(native-Canadians) on that native reserve in the Okanagan that I share childhood memories with(Would spend summers and spring breaks there as a kid). My grandmother is buried on the reserve because she was a youth social worker who helped out all the kids there(they would call her grandma too on top of all her step-grandchildren who were native). There was over 200 people at her wake and funeral because she was a positive influence on a lot of people there.

A lot of hate you see is a result of bad upbringing. Kids growing up with poor influences.

As a kid I was introduced and influenced to so many different cultures and peoples it helped me grow and appreciate all life.

I feel like if we target racism at its roots then we could prevent it a lot more nowadays at least here in North America. Socializing and Inclusiveness is the best way. It’s almost no different than socializing a dog when you look at it in simple terms.

this is hard to talk about, and i't could likely be the wrong thing to do. i don't know the rules, or even if there should be.

I'm going to talk about my experiences in upbringing from a white middle class family with a very vocally racist father.

i first remember racism from my father, there was a neighbour family that moved into our sub division who had brown skin.

I remember riding up the street, and talking with my new friend and his dad, we'd run around and play doing random kid stuff.

One day my dad came home from work and saw my friend and I  playing on the street infront of his house, i remember dad stopping and yelling at me to "GET HOME NOW"

sometime later Dad sat me down and told me I wasn't to play up the street anymore, I don't really remember exactly what I said but i remember being upset and arguing with him about why i couldn't. and he told me that it wasn't safe, and there was a lot of bad people out there who could hurt me or kidnap me.  I don't really remember playing much with my friend after that, and only remember playing with my friend next door.

after that i kinda remember dad start telling jokes ans stories about "chinese,indian,east-indian, and black people". he mostly talked about east-indian people, but secondly he talked about Asians.. he always was complaing about how they were moving in and stealing our neighbourhoods, cheating the system and complaining about how bad there breath was and how they stinked. one day dad was driving me through surrey to soccer practise. we drove past this new subdivision and i was pointing out how big the houses were and told him they must be rich! dad told me that east-indians lived there and they weren't rich and the only way they could afford houses was to have 15 people living in the same house, and how badly they stink cause they don't shower. he went off for about 15 minutes. and when he talked about the F'in chinese or "OWIENTALS" he'd be complaining about how they never learn proper english, there houses stink and they never brush thier teeth. and how we have to watch our pets around them cause they will eat them. he'd complain about thier driving, make slant eye's and always yelling and cursing at them while he was driving. the "indians" and "blacks" he didn't really complain about until was a teenager(he did complain but not very often) i remember one day for whatever reason he drove through east hastings, he pointed out how all the bums were drug addict, criminals who were rapists and murderer's. dad got angrier and angrier every year it seemed.

High school wasn't any different, this was pre-internet so all these racist jokes and stereotypes all came from our families or tv. if we heard a new joke, everyone heard it by the end of school. not too often did anyone ever say these things to thier faces but it did happen behind thier back alot.

I was already a closeted racist  by 9/11 and for the next ten years was obsessed with terrorism.

that trauma of that day is ingrained in most of us i imagine, and the years and years of the war on terror.

however many racist things i heard or said in my life, didn't stop me from changing my core beliefs that most people were good people regardless of race or religion.

and over the past twenty years have lived, worked, with many different races and religions. and as of the last 5 years spent a couple hundred hours watching movies on racism, sexism, african american racism,  captilisim and socialism.

but even through all those positive real life experiences and the studies i learned and believe in. i still will act differently around other races and religions on a sub-concious level.

Gotta love mentally ill black people being called "racist" and used to label "anti-asian" "hate crimes" as a black people issue. This guy would have hurt someone regardless of Covid and China's aggressive policies because of the broken prison system.

Not everything is a hate crime, sometimes it's just a regular crime. Anti-asian hate is on the rise, but it's still nothing compared to what blacks in the US face and to a lesser extent black people here. I'm technically Asian, but I'm brown so I'm not sure if I would count as "Asian" in the way its used for talking about these hate crimes. Honestly in BC specifically Asians have it a lot easier than most just because of their historical presence here along with already having large populations of Asian people. It's harder for a powerful group to discriminate against a minority if the minority can live their life without ever seeing the group in power. And in a lot of places in the lower mainland, Asians are the majority. Canadian's really need to stop importing America's political issues, it's a completely different environment. I'm more worried about Chinese influence here than anything else, and I'm sure a lot of Chinese-Canadian's are as well.

The people trying to pin this on black people are buying too much into group dynamics, black people aren't a monolith. Just like a white guy can 100% be not responsible at all for white supremacy issues, one mentally ill black man doesn't indict the black community in North America as being "the problem" with. Even if there's 50 of them, black people don't control what they're told by the media and they aren't the ones who pushed "what's wrong with black people, look at how well Asians are doing!" $&!# in the 90's and 80's.

Slightly off topic...

There is a thing I recently learned called "Unconscious Bias" and it's in everyone.  And is usually framed from your knowledge and experiences.

Unconscious bias (or implicit bias) is often defined as prejudice or unsupported judgments in favor of or against one thing, person, or group as compared to another, in a way that is usually considered unfair. ... In contrast, deliberate prejudices are defined as conscious bias (or explicit bias).

Unconscious or implicit bias refers to the associations that are made between different qualities and social categories such race, gender or disability and are judgements that are made without conscious awareness. These automatic preferences or stereotypes are a major contributor to a lack of workplace diversity.

A common example would be a tech-heavy project – the unconscious bias may cause a manager to assume that a younger person would be more apt to handle this job as opposed to an older one.
