-Vintage Canuck-, April 12 in Trades, Rumours, Signings
So far it's looking like a win-win trade. Vrana really is one of the more under-rated players in the league and now he'll get a chance to be the number 1 guy in Detroit, while Mantha has never really had a great opportunity to unleash his true potential. Now both these players are put into positions to succeed and they're scoring a goal a game. Of course it's only a small sample size but I think this trend will continue for a while.
Washington believes they've won the trade because they've basically found someone young who can be a bit of a transitional player into the next phase of Caps and maintain a high performance during that time (similar to what Boston and Pittsburgh have done - get young guys in their prime already to continue being successful).
Meanwhile Detroit are more-or-less going to continue the rebuild, with Vrana as hopefully a leader of it going forward. I really don't think there's that much between Vrana and Mantha, let alone a 1st, 2nd and Panik, especially in Yzerman's hands, those picks are money. Those who are saying late 1st/2nd round picks don't amount to much...pretty sure Mantha was 20th overall, look where Boeser was taken...in a good draft year that can easily be a top player and Stevie is the one you want drafting.
