Shady cap circumvention in Toronto

Frederick Anderson has been injured with a lower body injury for a long time now. So long, in fact, that he's taken to rollerblading with his buddies while he waits around.

What's the hold-up of inserting him back into the roster? Cap issues, of course. Justine Bourne from Sportsnet even writes today "It also seems quite likely that they’ve asked him to “rest” as long as conceivably possible (right until playoffs?) for salary cap purposes, and that him agreeing to do so likely came with some sort of guarantee of not losing the net." https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/analyzing-torontos-turbulent-goaltending-means-playoffs/

Meanwhile, four days ago, Sportsnet writes about how the NHL will closely monitor teams taking advantage of LTIR cap advantages, with Sportsnet's Chris Johnston saying "I think what the league is saying is 'we're going to watch you closely. We can request medical records if we think there's any funny business, cap circumvention, that kind of thing going on here. .. I think especially any players activated just for Game 1 of the playoffs, there will be Spockian eyebrow raised from the league and that's something they intend to enforce quite forcefully." https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/nhl-closely-monitor-teams-taking-advantage-ltir-cap-advantages/

So why isn't this a bigger deal for the Leafs? It's so obvious, their own media fan-club is writing about how they're taking advantage, and not one media person is calling them out on it. Meanwhile, Anderson keeps on rollerblading on....

What do you think about it?

Careful there, getting awfully close to Tankouver.

No point in tanking, we will just lose the draft lotto, anyway.

ANd J.B. will  likely still get a great player, and perhaps the best in the draft despite our draft number

People kidding themselves if they think the NHL is going to take action against it's self-anointed flagship franchise.

There would be a quick/easy solution to this - anyone on LTIR that doesn't return by the last 10 games of the regular season (or pick whatever number you feel reasonable) is thereby ineligible to return to active status (regular season or post-season) until the following regular season - watch these 'injured' players get healed right fast.

Its so obvious the only way out of this for Toronto is to circumvent the cap. Just like it was with Tampa Bay.

The NHL selectively enforcing cap circumvention penalties is so NHL. I'm sure Toronto & Tampa won't face any kind of punishment, or even warning, whatsoever.

NHL needs to make some kind of amendment to the hard cap to allow teams some flexibility, whether it be a 'franchise tag' or a minor cap discount on drafted players.

Have it so you can give one player a franchise tag but you cant use it again until the contract runs out whether you trade the player or he gets bought out. So if we gave it to petey on an 8 year deal and buy him out in year 6 we cant tag someone else until after the 8th year

Shady but that's honestly going to bite them in the ass having a goalie sit around then boom start game one.

If they keep this up, they will be the #3 seed in the North.  With the final 4 being seeded, you want to get as many points as you can in order to potentially play a team that upsets their way through the first 2 rounds.

I really see this season starting to slide off the rails for the "All in" Maple Leafs.
